I must be an oddball, I always started with the obits and then the comics.

There were many societal changes taking place at the same time which had influence on this becoming a fading part of our history. One is single motherhood, funded by the government. Great comments! I have such fond memories of newspapers. My grandfather used to read the Wall Street Journal to me from the time I could talk. (No whimpy fairy tales from him!). That’s how I learned there were Republicans and ‘Damnacrats’. Then as I got older I’d share the morning paper with my Dad. He always read the sections front-to-back and I read back-to-front, with the absolute understanding that if we both reached the middle section at the same time he got it first. Good times. Literacy was valued.

The decline of the daily paper started well before the internet was available.

The “yesterday’s news” slam is inaccurate. the deadline for the morning paper was something like six a.m.. and papers would rush out “extras” when something major happened.

There were also afternoon and evening papers.

The “news” on cable TV was just a heads up that they heard something happened, in other words, rumors. It would take hours, if not days, for the complete and real story to come out. How was that more timely than the printed, edited, and checked for accuracy papers.

Someone you knew might get their name in the paper, and it would be a big deal.

I watched that decades ago, and don’t really remember it. (I certainly didn’t watch it with the perspective and cognizance of politics that I have today [and didn’t have back then]).

I see a couple of free options on my Roku; so maybe it’s time to give it another go.

Perhaps you should refer her to the videos that are emerging of your “surgical” masks, used by millions around the world daily, containing what looks to be flat worms (microscopic).
