Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

The Noble Bereans And Paul’s Gospel
By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam
We have said that the Bereans were commended for listening with open minds to teachings which they had never heard before. Yes, when they were confronted with them. It was the Athenians, not the Bereans, who made it their policy to consider as many viewpoints as possible on every subject (Acts 17:18-21).
The strength of the Bereans was that they kept close to the Scriptures. When confronted with some new doctrine, they did indeed give it an interested hearing, but then“searched the Scriptures daily whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11). Had they found anything in Paul’s message which contradicted the Scriptures they would immediately have rejected it. And for this God calls them “noble”. They were the truly great, the spiritual aristocracy of their day.
Too many believers today aspire to be like the Athenians rather than the Bereans. They say they wish to have open minds, and this is good if it is remembered that an open mind is like an open mouth; not everything should be put into it.
The Athenians went to the other extreme from the Thessalonians, who would not even consider a new doctrine when confronted with it — would not even consider it in the light of the Scriptures.
The Bereans were the wisest of the three. They kept close to that blessed Book, and, when confronted with unfamiliar teachings, immediately subjected them to the test of Scripture.
This is the wisest course, even if only because we are all limited in time and strength. Obviously we cannot spend a great deal of time looking into the conflicting teachings of men without sacrificing a great deal of much-needed time for Bible study, and in the measure that we do this we are bound to grow spiritually weaker.

Acts 17:18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?
20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Stam was a great teacher. Though dated, I still use some of his old tracts.
He was a prolific author. Of all his books, the one every Christian should have in their library is “Holding Fast the Faithful Word”. It was originally titled “The Controversy”.
Solace friends . . .
That’s Kimmy Skota, she has a wonderful voice. She left the high flying international opera world and has committed her life to a small christian church movement in Africa.
Here she performs one of my favorites, The Vilja Song from The Merry Widow. Enjoy.
As a soprano soloist in younger days, The Faure was a standard for Catholic funerals.
In a side note, sometimes when singing a capella in a group, singers suppress the vibrato. It is difficult to coordinate the vibrato with that many voices as you don’t want anyone “standing out.” It is also more challenging to stay on pitch. But as you can hear in the second Pie Jesu, What the vibrato brings, is a much “truer” pitch, as the tone resides between the high and low part of the vibrato. It has been interesting, as a singer, that you change how you sing based on the circumstance. A capella, a capella group, choir, solo, duet, etc. Even styles, Broadway, Classical, Jazz, Gospel, pop… Probably more than you thought you’d get, Garrison and perhaps other singers will give their opinions! Even so…a VERY welcome break from politics! Thank you!! Neelia
Your’s is a great example of why we should never take great performances or great performers for granted. Once, while I was attending one of Pepe’ Romero’s master classes, I had a life-epiphny. Pepe’ played a passage, I think it was probably Albanez. It was something he played regularly in concert and was musical perfection, rendered with a technical skill that made a difficult passage look easy. Seeing it up close amid some really talented players was more than a little humbling. I realized at that point that classical guitar was going to be an enjoyable hobby. Rather than disappointment, I felt a huge sense of relief. 🙂
Do you play?
Yes, well enough to enjoy the music and appreciate a good guitar . . .
See what you started…below… neelia!

Go full screen and be ready to adjust your volume and then sit back and enjoy this mix of a wonderful piece of music played by a Doug Smith a Texan who composes and plays by ear with great wildlife, landscape, human subject, and weather photography taken by The Texas state photographer Wyman Meinzer.
Wyman Meinzer was declared the official Texas state photographer by George Bush when he was governor. He is a self taught photographer with a degree in biology and a background as a trapper/hunter and cowboy. He has many outstanding videos with some having other scores composed and played by Doug Smith, but the following is the one I like the best.

Beautimus!
Gorgeous photography and music…thanks!
Perhaps you know someone who needs to hear these three words: Don’t Give Up.
Had forgotten about that! ‘86? “So”. Amazing album!!!! And Kate Bush!!! Got one for you in a sec, Margot! Neelia
Thanks, Neelia. I’ll watch for it.
It was a choice between that or Big Time, which has a totally different message. I’d love to post Sledgehammer, but I think the opening images of that video would offend some of the folks here. Love the music, though.
I was going to post Kate Bush’s “ Heathcliff’. But the videos I found were all weird… neelia
OOPS…the Kate Bush song is “Wuthering Heights.”
Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier, Neelia. I will check out the song. Love the book, though. I always thought that Brian Ferry should have played Heathcliff in a movie version of Wuthering Heights. True Brit!
Margot, Our Treehouse friends are maybe totally ticked off at us for coopting this thread for now.. But maybe they will thank us for a diversion and contribute to memories of amazing bands and songs for a small respite before we get back into :”real life.”
“Margot, Our Treehouse friends are maybe totally ticked off at us for coopting this thread for now..”
I don’t think so. Treepers are pretty tolerant. If someone is ticked off, they’ll let you know. Or one of the admins will intervene. Nothing wrong with a bit of conversation between two commenters. I just wanted to respond to some of your comments.
Love Sledgehammer, as well! I posted the Hamilton video “Learning how to say good-bye”. From the White House performance. I got Lambasted!!!!!! “How dare I post that video!” My point was, watch Obama’s and Biden’s expressions…. REsponders thought I was talking about President TRump… So I will be more careful posting songs here. Like any good song, the listener participates!!! neelia!!!
Ha-ha, I’ve been there myself, I had learn to tone myself down considerably in order to post here, but most people are tolerant and forgiving of a few faux-pa’s here and there. That’s why you gotta love the Treepers.
OMG, Margot!!!!!! Maybe a wise move not posting “Sledgehammer” here! I just watched it again for the first time in what, 30 years? You made my day!!!!!!! Neelia!
Lol, sometimes a little restraint is good for the soul (and the souls of others). Stephen Johnson directed that video and was considered a video effects pioneer of the day. Some background on the video:

Great song, no matter what one might think of the video images.
Agreed!
(You do realize you are giving your approximate age away, right? ?)
Ha-ha, YES! LOVED the eighties. I worship at Don Johnson’s altar. 😀
One of the things I loved about Miami Vice was the music.
Babe…lost me there…? neelia
I was just thinking how Don Johnson and Miami Vice were a big part of the 1980s, especially for anyone who lived in South Florida at the time..
Hans Zimmer
Lol, Sepp, for a minute there I thought you were referring to Jan Hammer, but I looked up Zimmer and wow, I wasn’t familiar with the name, but what a body of work that man has. The Last Emperor was one of my favorite movies. I didn’t realize that he did the scoring for Rain Man, which I also enjoyed very much.
I remember when the Fairlight synthesizer came into broad use, I hired a guy to do the music for a marketing video I produced back in the 1980s and he used a Fairlight. He was a master at it, too. I don’t know if I should call Fairlight a “piece of equipment” or an “instrument”. I was in awe of what could be done with it.
These poor guys….wait for it!
..and we grew up with this and they wonder why we don’t get it now…
I wonder if they know who Queen is…
?
I’m guessing they’d be familiar with “We Are The Champions” at least. And “Another One Bites the Dust”.
..and “We will Rock you!!”
Reminds me of the two black guys who review various clips of stand up comedians. Their reactions are priceless.
Sometimes I read comments posted on the older music videos at youtube. Breaks my heart when some of the younger folks get upset and wonder why they don’t have any music like what they hear from the past.
Breaks my heart thaT we don’t have music…
Watching this 2-part interview with General Flynn. Terrifying.

Experts Demand Suspension of EU-China Investment Deal
Excerpt:
More than a hundred experts are demanding an end to the EU-China investment agreement, DER SPIEGEL has learned. They name serious human rights violations and the suppression of democracy movements in China as the reasons.

Experts, schmexperts. Those EU totalitarians don’t give a rat’s rear end what the schmexperts say, nor what the citizens want. They only respond to money – and the entity offering the most money is who gets their attention and votes.
2nd half of essay on Amphibious Warfare. I posted the first half several days ago.
III. Partial List of Major Amphibious Assaults during
WW II.
The German military Blitzkriegs pale in comparison to the scope and complexity of the amphibious Blitzkrieg invasions the allies conducted during WW II. During that war when one includes raids, evacuations, invasions, and end arounds to get past enemy strong points the allies conducted over 300 amphibious operations, depending on how one counts them. Of those operations here is a list of most of the major ones involving division size or larger forces assaulting on single or multiple beaches or lands defended by the enemy:
1. Watchtower-August, 1942, Invasion of Guadalcanal in the Solomon islands group in the South Pacific- less than 16,000 troops initially landed, 72 ships in the invasion fleets.
2. Torch- November, 1942. Invasion of North Africa – total of104,000 Troops landed. 301 ships in invasion fleets including covering forces.
3. Husky- July, 1943, Invasion of the island of Sicily, Italy -185,000 troops landed, 1,365 ships and major landing craft in the invasion fleets with 1,235 smaller vessels and landing craft.
4. Avalanche – September, 1943, Invasion of Salerno, Italy – 55,000 troops initially landed followed by another 105,000. 586 ships and major landing craft in invasion fleet plus a strong covering force.
5. Galvanic- November, 1943, Invasion of the islands of Tarawa atoll in the Gilbert Island group in the Central Pacific- 35,000 Marines and US Army, About 200 ships.
6. Shingle- January, 1944, Invasion of Anzio, Italy – 50,000 allied troops initially landed followed by another 115,000. 369 ships and major landing craft in invasion force plus a large covering force.
7. Overlord- June, 1944, Invasion of Normandy, France – 130,000 allied troops. 2,807 ships and major landing craft and 1,992 smaller landing craft.
8. Forager- June – August 1944, Invasion of Saipan, Guam, and Tinian islands in the Marianas Island group in the Central Pacific, total 130,000 troops landed. 800 ships plus TF 58 which was the largest naval battle formation of the time in support.
9. Dragoon- August, 1944, Invasion of Southern France – 150, 000 US troops followed by 25,000 Free French forces. 897 ships and major landing craft plus 1,300 minor landing craft.
10. Stalemate- September-November, 1944, Invasion of Peleliu island in the Carolinas group of the Central Pacific in preparation for the invasion of the Philippines – over 23,000 men landed. 500 ships.
11. King II- October-November, 1944, Invasion of the Philippine island of Leyte.
12. Detachment- February-March, 1945, Invasion of Iwo Jima of the Volcano Island group in the Pacific – 70,000 troops landed. 800 ships involved.
13. Iceberg- April-June, 1945, Invasion of Okinawa, “the front porch of Japan” and the largest amphibious invasion in history by most measures – 60,000 assault troops and Marines landed followed by another 113,000 troops.
In addition to the massive operations mentioned above and some not mentioned many other smaller landings of significant size were made during the war in the Pacific theater. The majority of these smaller amphibious operations were conducted by the US Army forces under General MacArthur in the South West Pacific using mostly Army assets with the Navy providing warships for protection, and fire support and on occasion loaning a Marine Division to the Army. For example MacArthur’s command mounted 13 separate amphibious assaults to get around Japanese strongholds and take the massive mountainous jungle island of New Guinea.
During WW II the US Army mounted considerably more amphibious operations than the US Navy/USMC. Most of the Amphibious invasions/operations mounted by the Army in WW II occurred relatively short distances from existing bases and thus the air support provided the landing troops came from land based aircraft and the invasion fleets could be made up of vessels with shorter ranges and less sea keeping ability than would be required for longer range operations. The Navy on the other hand mounted several amphibious invasions long distances from existing bases and thus most of the air support for their operations had to come from aircraft carriers with the Army Air Force only being able to assist with long range heavy bombers until air fields could be captured or built ashore. Since the Navy’s amphibious operations often targeted objectives long distances from existing bases their logistical problems were generally much more complex than the Army had to deal with for their shorter range operations.
IV. Amphibious warfare Vessels
The following is a list of vessels specifically used for landing forces upon beaches or in direct support or control of the landing effort. All of these vessels worked within range of enemy shore based fire. Many other vessels are involved in working close to shore in order to facilitate a landing. Ships like mine sweepers (AM, AMS), wooden sub chasers (SC), patrol craft (PC), Destroyers (DD) and Destroyer escorts (DE), and for the invasion at Normandy France, even specially made mini submarines all worked close to shore. But for these types of vessels amphibious invasion support is a supplementary mission and not a primary one. The ships and craft types listed below were all specifically adapted or designed and constructed to make the Amphibious Blitzkrieg possible by either landing on shore, launching landing craft, or controlling and coordinating the landing and supply operations. Only the most produced and used landing craft types are detailed here but the reader should understand that there were over a dozen other landing craft types used during the war including rubber boats.
A. Vessels that hit the beach.
LST (Landing Ship Tank).
From late1942 through 1945 about 1,050 of these 300+ foot long ocean going ships were built in various ship yards in the US and Great Britain. This ship was actually an invention of the British but the vast majority of them were built per standard US designs in the US. There were four basic versions of this type vessel built but the “Type II” was built in larger numbers than the others and so it is this types specifications you will find listed below.
In 1941 the US Navy Bureau of Ships, seeing the utility and requirement for a ship similar in design to the first few British built ships went to work designing an ocean going ship that could discharge vehicles and cargo right on the beach. By November of 1941 they had a design for a ship that could pump ballast water on to make the ships draft deeper for transiting open water and then pump the water out for the shallow draft needed to land on a beach. The design had clam shell doors in the bow of the ship allowing vehicles to disembark directly from it’s lower deck onto the beach. The two propellers and rudders were designed to sit relatively high on the stern and had heavy framing to protect them when the ship beached. To assist the ship in getting off the beach a heavy winch with a special anchor was mounted on the stern. As the ship approached the beach it would drop its special anchor and play out the chain and cable. When it was time to leave the beach the powerful winch would be engaged and pull on the anchor there by assisting the ships engines in pulling free of the bottom and backing away from the shore. Many times during the war these ships were left high and dry on sandy beaches as the tide receded with no ill effects.
The US submitted their design to the British in Nov. 1941 and it was approved and the British ordered 200 under lend lease asking for them as soon as they could be built. In Oct. 1942, just four months after it’s keel was laid, the first US built LST went to sea.
More LSTs were built at five inland locations rather than at the coastal ship yards which were busy building other ships needed for the war. The largest builder of LSTs was in Evansville, IN. When completed the ships transited down to the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
LSTs were first used in Jun 1943 in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific as US troops and Marines advanced north towards Bougainville from Guadalcanal via various amphibious landings. The first invasion in which a large contingent of LSTs saw action was on the beaches of Sicily in July of 1943.
The LST was slow (8 knots cruise, 12 knots emergency flank speed). It was so slow that crews said that ” LST” actually stood for “Large Slow Target”. But in reality only 26 LSTs were lost to enemy action during WW II. A more significant problem with the design was that it had a high “free board” (the side of the vessel exposed above the water) which presented a lot of “sail” area for the wind to effect the navigation of the ship. Actually this feature which made the ship very difficult to handle in a storm resulted in the loss of far more LSTs than enemy action did. Most LSTs lost due to weather were wrecked by being driven ashore by high seas and winds when storms hit during amphibious invasions and the ships were anchored or “keeping station” by slowly sailing near the beaches at unprotected roadsteads where they were exposed to the full fury of a storm.
An LST had a full loaded displacement of about 4,000 tons but for beach landings the load had to be reduced so that the ship displaced 2,400 tons or less. Despite the precaution of lessening the load for landings typically about 10% of the LSTs that beached would be rendered unsuitable for future landings because of the wear and tear on their hulls. On average once an LST had beached 10 times it was a wreck and unsuitable for further beach landings.
LSTs that could no longer be used to beach but were still sea worthy were adapted to many uses that did not require beaching. They were put to use as troop transports, hospital ships (Over 41,000 wounded allied troops were shuttled back to England from Normandy, France via LSTs), landing craft repair ships, PT boat tenders, floating barracks, and supply dumps. Several of the battered LSTs were even converted to a sort of mini aircraft carrier by building a wooden landing deck from which up to 8 light single engine reconnaissance and liaison aircraft like the L-2 Grasshopper could operate. A few were loaded up with the Bofars 40mm antiaircraft guns and used as antiaircraft ships to help cover the landings.
General Eisenhower once said that the Jeep and the M 1 Garand rifle were the two most important weapons in the war. He should have added the LST because without it the invasion of Normandy would have not have succeeded. When a storm destroyed the two man made Mulberry harbors servicing the US and British beaches in Normandy, the LSTs with their ability to beach, shuttling between Britain and the invasion beaches, were essential in keeping materials, tanks, vehicles and supplies flowing to the struggling allied invasion forces. And this essential logistical service went on for months because the allies had no great ports.
Today there are several LSTs on display in their original WW II configurations but only one sails and all the rest are static displays.
Standard LST 2 specifications:
Displacement 1780 tons standard; 3880 tons full

Boats 2-6 LCVP
LSM (Landing Ship Medium).
This was essentially a scaled down version of the LST that was about 1/3rd the size of its larger sister and with the bridge superstructure moved from the rear of the ship to the middle in most classes. LSMs were the smallest of the true ocean going ships that were designed to be beached.
As the war progressed it was recognized that the LST was too large and cumbersome and it’s draft too deep to land on many beaches where access was restricted by reefs or topography. So early in 1944 the USN Bureau of Ships began development of a vessel that could transit the vast open waters of the Pacific but land a significant number of tanks or other vehicles on beaches that the LST couldn’t reach. Construction of the LSMs began in May of 1944 and continued until May of 1945. In that one year period 558 of the ships in several different class variants were launched. Once the ship yards got set up for mass production it took only 53 days from keel laying to the launching of a new LSM.
Over 50 of these ships were built specifically for specialized roles. The majority of these ships constructed for a specialized role were designated LSRs (Landing Ship Rocket) and configured for launching massive numbers of 5” rockets to saturate the landing areas with firepower just before the assault troops landed. Others were constructed to specialize in recovering and salvaging smaller landing craft.
Today there is only one LSM in existence in its original WW II configuration.
Standard LSM Specifications

LCI (Landing Craft Infantry)
The LCI was specifically designed for landing infantry units. They looked like small ships and in fact could transit some expanse of ocean but their sea keeping abilities and range were too limited for long voyages. Upon landing the vessel would lower two long ramps on each side of it’s bow which allowed a single file of infantrymen to descend to the beach. These vessels were ideal for the short range amphibious operations that the US Army conducted since they could be loaded with their human cargo in port and carry them right to the landing beaches. There were several specialty conversions to gunships with mortars or rockets for close in fire support on the beach and as Landing Craft Flotilla command ships. About 1,000 of the infantry carrying versions were built plus 300 as gun ships and another 49 as Flotilla command ships.
Landing Craft Infantry Specifications

Speed: 15.5 knots
Complement 3 officers, 21 enlisted
Armament: 4x 20mm
Capacity: 6 officers and 182 troops or 75 tons cargo
LCT (Landing Craft Tank)
Designed to carry vehicles up to 20 miles, the LCT was built in 3 sections that bolted together to form a vessel that looked like a barge with an armored deckhouse near the stern and a ramp which lowered for disembarking its load of vehicles and tanks. About 1,000 were built and some converted for firing rockets. It was from LCTs that the majority of tanks on the Normandy beaches were discharged during the assault phase. Other “Duel Drive” M-4 Sherman tanks intended to swim ashore on their own at Normandy were discharged into the water from the ramp of these vessels.
Landing Craft Tank Specifications
Displacement: 286 tons (landing)

LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel)
This is the landing craft that most people picture when they think of amphibious landings in WW II. They came in various sizes but were all small. Essentially a boxy boat with a ramp on the front that lowered to discharge a 36 men or a single tank or other vehicle(s) right on the beach. Considerably smaller than all the other landing craft it was constructed and used in larger numbers than any other type. The LCVP was commonly known as the “Higgins boat”, named for its inventor. This landing craft was carried to the vicinity of the landing by LSTs and other larger ships and was lowered into the water next to the ship and then the troops climbed down rope netting to board it to go in for the assault though in some cases the boats were loaded and then lowered into the water. Well over 23,000 of these landing craft were built in WWII with 1,000s of other variants based on it’s basic design. A somewhat larger version of the vessel designated the Landing Craft Medium or LSM could carry a whole platoon of about 60 men because one disadvantage of the smaller version was that it required a platoon to be broken down between 2 or 3 boats and in combat conditions such as were encountered on Omaha beach it was impossible to reconstitute the unit once ashore,
B. Amphibious Vehicles
Against heavy defenses getting across the beach quickly was essential. Amphibious vehicles could get the troops across open beaches quickly and then provided critical logistical support during the early stages of the invasion.
DUKW
The DUKW was an adaption of the standard Army 2 ½ ton truck (Duce-and-a- half) for amphibious warfare. The Army 2 ½ ton truck had drive to all six wheels and was capable of traversing soft sands on beaches with little trouble. In order to make the truck amphibious a metal box enclosed the engine and drive train, a light hull was added for buoyancy and sea keeping, and the power take off drive was hooked up to twin screws. Also an air compressor driven by the engine was added and the tires made so that the air pressure in them could be adjusted from the cab of the truck for traversing difficult terrain such as mud flats or rocky shores where landing craft could not go. The DUKW proved to be a very valuable asset able to swim out to cargo ships and take on up to 25 men or 2 tons of materials and bring it’s cargo through the water at up to 6 mph, across the beach and onto where ever it needed to go traveling up to 45 mph on roads. Once things were organized at the beach head the DUKWs were used to carry emergency priority loads because they could go right from ship to shore then drive right on to the place where the materials were needed. Developed in 1943 over 21,000 of them were built during the war. A lighter jeep version of the DUKW was built in small numbers but it’s utility was limited.
Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT & LVTA)
The LVT was tracked like a tank and could swim. They were commonly called “Alligators”. LVTs were heavier and larger than DUKWs and later in the war when an armored version was developed they became a combat vehicle. The unarmored version of the LVT was available for Normandy but its use was rejected by the Army and so LVTs were pretty much used exclusively in the Pacific by the USMC except for a few used by Montgomery during his crossing of the Rhine. The LVT saved many a Marines life with its ability to crawl quickly over obstacles, such as a short sea wall or enemy fighting position near the shore.
The unarmored LVTs were essentially personnel carriers and could carry up to 20 Marines. Over 10,000 of these amphibious vehicles were manufactured in four different marks.
By 1944 the armored version of the LVT known as the LVT(A) was available and it packed a 37 mm gun in a turret. In later versions a 75 mm Howitzer was mounted in a turret turning the LVT(A) into essentially an amphibious light tank. Had these vehicles been available at Normandy allied casualties would have been considerably reduced. Fewer than 9,000 LVT(A) in three different marks were manufactured during the war but more would have been produced had the invasion of the Japanese home islands proven necessary.

DD M-4 Sherman Medium Tank
The Sherman tank adapted to swim was used only once during the war for the Normandy invasion on the US beaches. “DD” stood for “Dual Drive” meaning the power train of the tank could run either the tracks for land operations or small twin propellers. Though the twin screws provided adequate power for the tank to navigate the collapsible skirts which provided the buoyancy to allow the tank to float were found to be inadequate to the task in all but the calmest waters. 100,s of US tanker drown on D-day when the skirts collapsed or were over topped by the rough seas. Seeing that failure of the skirts on the tanks that tried to swim in, some of the bravest of the LCT skippers, after conferring with the tank unit commander on their vessel, drove right on in and landed their tanks on the beaches in the conventional manner despite heavy enemy fire. The British had much better luck with the DD tanks on D-day because their beaches were bettered sheltered from the rough seas in the channel.
C. The Conventional Ships that didn’t hit the beach
In addition to the ships, craft, and vehicles that ran right up on the beach were the large ships specifically designed or adapted for their critical roles in amphibious warfare. Listed here are the most used and common.

These were adapted merchant ships or specially designed and constructed ships used to transport the bulk of the troops longer distances where the ship would anchor ½ mile or more from the beaches to discharge their human cargo. There the troops would embark on landing craft carried to invasion on the deck of the APA or coming from other ships. Sizes of these ships varied greatly ranging from less than 5,000 tons up to 21,000 tons. An average APA carried about 1,500 troops and 15 to 36 LCVP landing craft and 2 to 4 LCMs. The Landing craft would be lowered over the side by the ships davits and the troops would climb down into the landing craft via rope boarding nets strung over the side of the ship. Loading the landing craft in this manner could be a very hazardous operation in even moderate seas. Nearly 150 ships were modified or built to serve as APAs during WW II. Landing a typical US Infantry Division would require 10-15 of these ships. Typical crew size was about 150 men. APA were armed with a variety of weapons up to 5” naval rifles primarily for anti-aircraft defense in the Pacific but in the Atlantic the guns were sometimes used to defend against attacks by German E-boats.
Attack Cargo Ship (AKA)
Adapted Merchant or specially built ships used to transport cargo and quickly off load it onto landing craft, landing ships, or amphibious vehicles for transport ashore in a war zone. Over 200 of this type ship in various sizes from 4,000 to 8,000 tons, saw service during WW II. Crew would be 100 to about 400. Many AKAs carried their own landing craft for transporting their cargo to shore but some did not and relied on boats from the APAs and other sources. On the larger versions carrying their own amphibious craft an AKA could carry up to 12 LCVPs, 8 LSMs, and a LCT. The loading of these ships in preparation for an amphibious landing was a complex task. Vehicles, weapons, supplies, and all other cargo loaded was to be ready for immediate use and put into the holds in the reverse order of which it’s need was anticipated. IOW crates of small arms ammunition would be loaded in the hold for quicker access than the Padres organ or the clerks typewriter which would be down near the bottom of the hold. This method of stowage of cargo was known as “Combat Loading” and it greatly reduced the tonnage of cargo a AKA could carry.
Landing Ship Dock
This ship was designed with an internal dock out of which landing craft and amphibious vehicles could be directly launched into the water. It is a forerunner of the modern amphibious landing ships the USMC uses today. 22 of these ships were built and used during the war. They were 454 feet long and 4,500 tons. LSDs could carry as many as 14 loaded LCVPs or 2 or 3 loaded LCTs. But during WW II their principle value was not transporting preloaded landing craft. The internal dock provided for onsite repair facilities for all the landing craft and other small craft like PT boats. Since the landing craft took a beating as they shuttled back and forth to the beach and LSD with it’s ability to repair the craft at sea and there were so few of them they were very valuable ships.
Amphibious Command Ship (AGC)
On these ships is where the brains that ran the amphibious operations lived. These ships were loaded with specialists and commanders responsible for fitting together and coordinating the vast and varied functions of all the other ships and thus were loaded with communications gear in order to transmit their orders. Twenty four of these ships were used during the war. Eight of them were adapted from existing passenger ships or Coast Guard Cutters. The rest were larger ships of 7,430 tons and 435 ft. long specially built and fitted out for their command functions. These larger specially built versions were crewed by up to 600 men. The loss of one of these ships during an amphibious assault would have been catastrophic. Fortunately none were ever lost.
Great info, thanks.

Love reading these things from a shootin’, sluggin’ fightin’ Renaissance man of the written word by first hand experience.
As I read your captivating, almost James Michener like remembrances and recitations, I envision you in a forward position, 9 steps down in an earth and log roof bunker, with lighting by Lantern, Gas, White, Primus; scrunched over a 1942 Underwood typewriter mounted on a triple stack of empty 60m mortar round boxes, while you sit on an empty pineapple frag case. With a Thompson M1A1 (fixed firing pin), with correct mustard sling, leaning against your cot, Colt 1911 next to the Underwood, front seam M1 on the cot, with sandbagged Browning M1917A1 heavy mg’s on the perimeter and 60m mortar pits a few hundred yards behind, and the ammo dump generously covered by netting. With 6″ of snow all around.
Bastogne. In living color. Keep ’em coming. If you wrote a book I’d buy it.

I did sleep with my weapons in training in SF. In Lebanon and a couple other placesI always slept with my M1911A! with me.

Watts Up With That is the is the most visited site on the web having to do with Climate Science and the continuing arguments about global warming. It now has a new resource for those of us that sometimes get into arguments/discussions with the true believers that swallow everything they alarmists have taken in hook, line, and sinker, and regurgitate to us.
So if you at times need a resource to look up the current science on any particular aspect of the climate change issue then here is a single source where you can find it.

We sure did.

LOOK AGAIN AND CONSECRATE
“If God so clothe the grass of the field…shall He not much more clothe you?” Matt. vi. 30
A simple statement of Jesus is always a puzzle to us if we are not simple. How are we going to be simple with the simplicity of Jesus? By receiving His Spirit, recognizing and relying on Him, obeying Him as He brings the word of God, and life will become amazingly simple. “Consider,” says Jesus, “how much more your Father Who clothes the grass of the field will clothe you, if you keep your relationship right with Him.” Every time we have gone back in spiritual communion it has been because we have impertinently known better than Jesus Christ. We have allowed the cares of the world to come in, and have forgotten the “much more” of our Heavenly Father.
“Behold the fowls of the air” – their main aim is to obey the principle of life that is in them and God looks after them. Jesus says that if you are rightly related to Him and obey His Spirit that is in you, God will look after your ‘feathers.’
“Consider the lilies of the field” – they grow where they are put. Many of us refuse to grow where we are put, consequently we take root nowhere. Jesus says that if we obey the life God has given us, He will look after all the other things. Has Jesus Christ told us a lie? If we are not experiencing the “much more,” it is because we are not obeying the life God has given us, we are taken up with confusing considerations. How much time have we taken up worrying God with questions when we should have been absolutely free to concentrate on His work? Consecration means the continual separating of myself to one particular thing. We cannot consecrate once and for all. Am I continually separating myself to consider God every day of my life?

Scenes Beyond the Grave – Marietta Davis
Chapter II – Man At Death
2:2
Touched again by the light beaming from her right hand, I beheld the immortality of those who were quitting their houses of clay, entering upon the regions of eternity and commencing new and untried realities. Around each dying form were gathered spirits, varied in appearance and in movement.
Over battle-fields were congregated spirits of the dead, and according to the moral nature of the dying, was that of attending spirits who awaited their arrival in the spirit world. In like manner, all classes and conditions are effected, since this intermediate state or vestibule of the spirit world, is visited by beings varying in character from the unholy and wretched, to the bright and sanctified angels who in multitudes congregate at the portals of death, as messengers of God. And all classes as they emerge from the physical form are attached to and mingle with kindred associations, beings to whose character they assimilate. Those of discordant and unhallowed natures are attracted by like elements, and enter into regions overhung with clouds of night; while those, who for the love of good, desire pure associations, are by heavenly messengers conducted to the orb or glories appearing above the intermediate scene.
The strange sensations of human spirits as they mingled with the disembodied multitudes, beholding what was transpiring around them, excited my wonder, and while watching their movements, I began to ask myself, if what I saw was a reality or mere imagery reflected upon my mind in a dreamy state? Upon discovering my thoughts, my guide took me by the hand saying, “These beings moving about thee, once the inhabitants of earth whence thou art, having left their mortal dwellings, are commencing a new state of existence. Their surprise is the effect of their sudden change from external objects and sense to spiritual, and their more immediate knowledge of CAUSE and EFFECT. But more of this state and their condition shall be revealed when that instruction will better befit thy mind. These scenes we will leave and ascend to yon bright orb.” Thus saying she led me toward the cloud of light.

Good morning Treepers. We had a ‘serious weather incident’ yesterday – homes damaged, trees down and such. The neighbors across the stree, serious Trumpsters, immediately went out checking on people, picking up flags that had blown down, helping with removing tree debris etc. These are fundamentally decent people, typical of Trump supporters who love their country and neighbors – that the Woke Zombies in our media, our government and our schools slander fine people such as these as domestic terrorists nauseates me. Sorry for the rant but this slander angers me so much it makes me feel sick – I appreciate this refuge so very much to be able to say something in praise for my decent American ‘Normie’ neighbors. God bless them and all of you.
Jill Biden is a shlub; even when wearing high-end fashion…………I miss FlOTUS Melania……
I know nothing of haute couture, but as a practicing lecherous old reprobate, I appreciate well-wrapped femininity. I was quite taken aback by the media fawning over the “stylish” Bidenette gaggle. My first thought looking at the photos was “Thrift Shop or Outlet Store?”
They were all wearing top coats that looked like off-the-rack Burlington Coat Factory.
“Oh my country, so beautiful and so lost!”
” Va, pensiero ” (Italian: [ˈva penˈsjɛːro]), also known as the ” Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves “, is a chorus from the opera Nabucco (1842) by Giuseppe Verdi. It recollects the period of Babylonian captivity after the loss of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE. The libretto is by Temistocle Solera, inspired by Psalm 137.” [wikipedia]
Some critics believe that Verdi deliberately makes parallels in this opera between the Hebrews and the Italians, who in Verdi’s time were living—some say suffering—under Austrian rule. In fact, after the curtain fell on the opera’s final act at the conclusion of its premiere at La Scala on March 9, 1842, shouts of “Freedom for Italy,” came from members of the audience, who recognized themselves in the Hebrews. https://www.liveabout.com/va-pensiero-lyrics-and-text-translation-724034

Go, thoughts, on golden wings;
Go, settle upon the slopes and hills,
where warm and soft and fragrant are
the breezes of our sweet native land!
Greet the banks of the Jordan,
the towers of Zion …
Oh my country so beautiful and lost!
Or so dear yet unhappy!
Or harp of the prophetic seers,
why do you hang silent from the willows?
Rekindle the memories within our hearts,
tell us about the time that have gone by
Or similar to the fate of Solomon,
give a sound of lament;
or let the Lord inspire a concert
That may give to endure our suffering.
I’ve been lurking since the bacon days of Trayvon Martin. Hope to see all our bacon loving Treepers gather here once again. Here’s 50 ways to cook your bacon. Sorry it’s on YouTube:
We’ve tried several and pan fry is still king at my house. We really don’t eat much fried foods but every 4 to 6 weeks my craving takes over and I will pull a pound of bacon out and fry it up and make BLTs.
Someday I too can have bacon again. It will be glorious.
For decades now the alarmists have been stressing over the bleaching of coral reefs. The claim being that increased levels of CO2 are causing coral bleaching. Billions of dollars have been spent on research, much of it junk science because of this claim. As you read this just get this one fact straight. Solar irradiance (sunshine) is what is responsible for nearly all warming of significantly large bodies of water, be they oceans or lakes. Most of the rest of the warming of water comes from geologic factors such as underwater volcanoes. Ambient air temperature is a very tiny factor in the warming of our oceans. Thus increased atmospheric CO2 has little to do with ocean warming and thus from the start the claim of atmospheric CO2 causing coral bleaching has been a scam.
Claim: Major discovery helps explain coral bleaching – Watts Up With That?

Good Morning Treepers!
Fairly new to this site, so glad I found it. Not sure this is allowed, if not I apologize, but looking for advice for my son who was laid off months ago (thanks covid) and struggling to find a job in the insurance/finance industry. One of the smartest kids I know, with an impeccable academic record (math/statistics) and 1.5 years in the corporate world, is finding it extremely difficult for potential employers to respond. Just needs the right person to give him a shot. Thank you and God Bless!
Don’t know if it will help; Rush Limbaugh spent MANY hours encouraging folks to start their own businesses.
If he hasn’t taken the actuarial exams yet, passing the first one will be a big leg up in the insurance industry…
Search for ‘actuarial exams.’ There are two paths – one is property/casualty, one is life insurance. The life side is heavier on investment theory. If he starts with the exams, he’ll need to choose which path interests him.
Passing the first one should open some doors…
Mandy that was educational… i won’t be working in insurance but know young people who
Might. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks Mandy for the response. He’s passed 3. Hasn’t opened any doors yet.
Deuteronomy 11:13-16
13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.
16 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;
2 Timothy 2:1-2,5,8-12
1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:
9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:
12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
Isaiah 41:13
13 For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

“The Chicago Teacher’s Union is defying the school board that has ordered teachers to return to in-person instruction. But the teachers claim the schools aren’t safe to work in, and on Sunday, they voted overwhelmingly to continue to teach remotely. (In other words they voted to stay on paid vacation.)
This isn’t sitting well with many parents — especially minority parents — in the 355,000-student school district. They aren’t stupid. They know their kids are falling farther and farther behind white suburban kids because there just isn’t any substitute for in-person learning.
But teachers are resisting because the plans and procedures to keep teachers safe — the same plans and procedures that are being used in many other school districts across the nation that have already opened — aren’t good enough.
The teachers want “minimal risk” of getting sick and they want to wait until the vaccine becomes more widely available.” ~ PJMedia via FreeRepublic
Instead of Going Back to Class as Ordered, Chicago Public School Teachers Vote to Stay Remote (freerepublic.com)
Actually, that the schools aren’t safe is TRUE due to the feral children inside them. Especially in the ‘special areas’ and kill zones where feral adults can be found. The education system and Democrat war strategy created this problem deliberately. I think the burnout rate for teachers was 2 years last time I checked. These morons are complaining about the wrong disease….

Now is the time for concrete action in regards to a MAGA community beyond a discussion board. It is time to stop funding our suppressors. It is time for like minded rebel alliance members to establish an American Made Marketplace (Quality products, Fair value, Customer focused, and Small business friendly).
Since my multi-national employer has elected to snuff out my career, I am now positioned to commit my time, talents, and fortune in support of an enterprise with real impact. This effort can not be successful without the support of other like minded Patriots. I can not think of a better community from which to find collaborators than the CTH.
While I welcome feedback on the idea, I am most interested in hearing from those who could directly support the building of such a platform. I have project management skills and a vision, but will need internet platform expertise. The concept would be to provide a common ordering and payment processing system with vendor supported marketing and shipping.
My hope is that this would eventually lead to the creation of an American First Business Guild which supersedes the influence of the Chamber of Commerce.

Trump campaign distances itself
from groups filing under ‘Patriot Party’
Memo reminder…
Former President Donald Trump’s official campaign committee has disavowed groups filing with the Federal Elections Commission under the label of the ‘Patriot Party,’ stating that they are not authorized by Trump.
“On January 22, 2021, Patriot Party filed a Form 1 (Statement of Organization) listing DJTFP as a participant in purported joint fundraising activities under 11 C.F.R. 102.17,” Donald J. Trump for President Inc., the Trump’s official campaign committee, stated in a filing, reports the Daily Wire.
“DJTFP did not authorize the filing of this Form 1, has not entered into any joint fundraising agreement to fundraise through Patriot Party, and has no knowledge of Patriot Party’s activities whatsoever,” they stated.
“To be clear: DJTFP has no affiliation with Patriot Party, which is not authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTFP,” the filing continued. “DJTFP is placing this disavowal notice on the public record out of concern for confusion among the public, which may be misled to believe that Patriot Party’s activities have been authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTFP — or that contributions to this unauthorized committee are being made to DJTFP — when that is not true,” the statement continued.A spokesperson for the former president says that Trump and his team “are not supportive of this effort, have nothing to do with it and only know about it through public reporting.”
