EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Police have identified a suspect in the Tuesday night attempted murder of a trooper in East St. Louis, according to the Illinois State Police. Charges and warrants were issued Wednesday for 52-year-old Gregory K. Nelson of East St. Louis.

The St. Clair County EMA tweeted that police were fired at while on Interstate 255 near State Street around 11:30 Tuesday night.

According to officers at the shooting scene, the incident began when a trooper with the Illinois State Police pulled over Nelson for a suspected DUI. Nelson then reportedly exited his vehicle and had a conversation with the trooper before firing his weapon.

According to the charges, Nelson removed a pistol from his clothing and moved toward the officer before discharging the weapon. Nelson was last seen fleeing from the scene on foot. The trooper returned fire as Nelson continued running.

The trooper, a nine year veteran, was not injured in the incident. It is unknown if Nelson sustained any injuries.

After the incident, police barricaded the ramp on Interstate 255 south to State Street and set up a perimeter to search for a suspect. The ramp was reopened Wednesday morning. Nelson, who is considered armed and dangerous, is believed to be in the East St. Louis area. (read more)
