There is a MASSIVE amount of speculation about the actual capability of ISIS to engage effectively in combat operations.
It is prudent to pause for a moment.
While we certainly don’t know the composition of the forces that might now be aligned with ISIS, it’s a bit of a stretch to say they would be capable of effectively using advanced technological military weaponry; the key word is “effectively”.
I’m not trying to downplay the risk, but it takes a considerable amount of specialized training, sometimes years, for units to be well versed in combat operations using advanced stage weapons.
You don’t just jump in a stryker vehicle, (the primary weapon of concern ISIS “might have” retrieved from Baland AFB) dust off a .50 cal mounted (laser range finder) auto cannon and pull the trigger. It takes training to use these effectively.
This level of weaponry is designed to be used synergistically with other accompanying units; mortar sections, fire support teams etc.
Artillery is even more complex; far more complex.
It’s definitely concerning that U.S. trained Iraqi national military might be switching sides and/or joining with the Sunni extremists. That’s probably their best hope of being able to use any captured weaponry.
Another unknown, and/or concerning element, revolves around reports of ‘Western Passport holders” who have joined up with the ISIS units. Who are they ?
The bottom-line is essentially while they might have taken control over weapons, that’s not to say they possess the skillset to use them. More information is needed.
