We traveled today for my daughter’s first counseling appointment and the agency that specializes in human trafficking was in the neighborhood I was born in. My mother’s grave is in a cemetary next door and my childhood home less than 2 miles away.
What once was a vibrant community with one of the best high schools and adjacent working farms… just thirty years ago… has quite literally turned into a multi cultural mecca barely recognizable to me.
It gave off Tijuana vibes… but not simply from a Hispanic population… there were diverse shops and restaurants making the area deeply immersive for these populations. Caribbean, halal, Korean,… you name it.
And within it… a huge agency and affiliates for human trafficking and homelessness run by some of the biggest most influential names in professional sports and business.
It was like walking into another country.
The big Simon Properties shopping mall is vacant and closed up… the multi-lingual signs only readable from my experience working in border towns.
