I spent about 45 minutes on a call with a former Blackhawk pilot who is currently a pilot for a major carrier. His assessment is that the crash was likely due to a cascading series of errors in part due to inadequate disclosure from the Tower about the location and altitude of the regional aircraft compounded by inadequate staffing in the Tower, and the diminished situational awareness of the pilot of the Blackhawk due to the use of night vision goggles.
He further explained that automated flight sensors are generally turned off below 1,000 feet as Visual Flight Rules apply and automated warnings and systems are considered distractions and/or otherwise increase risk.
He explained that the Blackhawk test runs are necessary to prepare for the potential need to evacuate the Pres/VP and others in the hierarchy of command to the airport and/or secret bunkers in the event of an enemy attack.
I found his assessment to be extremely credible, which leads me to believe that this was most certainly a tragic accident.
In the conversation, he also expressed his concern about how the FAA fails to act with sufficient urgency to address serious safety issues that pilots and others have raised for years until ‘blood is shed.’ He explained that the FAA’s dual missions to promote air travel and safeguard the skies are in conflict, and lead to long delays in implementing important safety changes in protocols and equipment as carriers push back against investing capital and/or introducing new procedures that cost money and/or time.
He gave me a number of such examples from the past where the FAA delayed acting on pilot concerns until planes went down.
He explained that the FAA has been captured by the airline industry, much like the FDA has been inappropriately captured and influenced by the Pharma lobby.
While he generally believes that Air Traffic Control does ‘a great job,’ he also expressed agreement with @realDonaldTrump in how DEI has injected itself into ATC and in pilot recruitment.
He gave examples of having to take over the controls within moments of landing to avoid a crash landing when a co-pilot with inadequate experience, training and capabilities was too quickly advanced into the cockpit to meet DEI goals. He also said the pilot shortage is real and we need to recruit more candidates.
All of the above create a real opportunity for change in U.S. aviation in the Trump administration and speak to the importance of the selection of new leadership for the FAA and a focus on excellence and meritocracy rather than meeting quota goals.
I have always believed that good comes from the bad. Let’s not let the 67 souls who lost their lives die in vain. Let’s make sure this tragedy is a catalyst for important and rapid improvements in US aviation.

I spent most of my life in NE Philadelphia close to where the plane crashed. (Recently moved to Bucks County) Very busy area at rush hour. Cars and houses were on fire. Gas lines were on fire. 6 people on the medical plane. The patient was a little girl.

Don’t know how pilot’s NVG’s work but infantry infrared NVG’s would’ve been overpowered by all the city lights as well as the airliner’s bright lights. All those lights would’ve “bloomed” in the NVG’s as super bright spots. It’s very hard to the helo pilot didn’t (1) see the airliner lights directly in front of his/her craft, (2) remove the NVG’s to prevent retina damage, (3) see the airliner.
First, NVGs are not actually “infrared” All they do is amplify the visible light spectrum, with just a smidge of spillover into the “near IR” spectrum.
Second, landing and taxi lights on aircraft are very directional, or all the pilots at every airport would be blinded. They light up (and are visible to) objects in front, not objects approaching from the side.
Third, there is no “retina damage” from NVGs. Ever. That is pure Hollywood. The image you see through the goggles is usually powered by aaa batteries. If the light source is too bright, the NVGs crank down the gain to prevent damage to themselves, not your eyeballs.
That is the problem. NVGs in a brightly lit area mask all the detail, like the side view of the CRJ you are about to hit.
And they are U.S. military, regardless of their personal views, who signed on the dotted line to lay their life down for the service of their country. And regardless of decisions of their superiors, or the pilots presence or absence of a mistake, they did lay down their life in service for their country — even if on a training mission.
Flying a helicopter requires a lot of strength in the leg muscles. I know I was on a jury that had to address the problem and the helicopter pilot was a male. My 1st question would be should ladies be flying helicopters. Men having babies. Women flying copters.
Because air travel is the biggest polluter, I believe they’re reducing the skills of the air traffic controllers to make that method of travel seem unsafe to the public, driving down the desire for normal people, but elites have no restrictions…

Good analysis and matches what I heard from my friend who flew those routes for several years doing presidential patrols. I also spoke to my friend who was an airline Captain, turned lawyer, worked for FAA legal, then went back to airline Captain. She was sure the ATC instructions were insufficient. It is mandatory to give the direction “Traffic 2:00 at 400′ descemnding” rather than the abbreviated version used by the controller “Do you have the traffic ?” So the fact that it is mandatory not discretionary means some clear legal liability for the government.
Big question in everyone’s mind is why the helicopter was at 300′.
Also I have heard reports that the ATC instructed the helicopter to ‘maintain heading’ — which would be a big mistake on ATC’s part.
A quick note of clarification: The TCAS systems display traffic on an indicator in the cockpit. The RAs – Resolution Advisories – are turned off or disabled below certain altitudes because traffic cannot exactly “descend” when they are 200′ However, the display shows and one can see the target of other aircraft. I notice that the helicopter was 200′ for quite a while and then started climbing shortly before impact. If he was on an assigned heading, I wonder if he saw the traffic on the display and initiated a climb in an attempt to avoid descending traffic ?
Those of us who were not in the cockpit will never know.

Pilots complained for years about hte garbage scows parked off the end of the runways at La Guardia because of all the birds hanging around the scows, but no one listened because the high rent people didn’t like the smell of garbage. My favorite on so far is the elimination of 10 regulations for each new 1 imposed.
It makes reference to the Trump-45 term where his Administration had promised to eliminate 2 regulations for each new 1 imposed but exceeded that by eliminating 5 1/2 for each new 1 imposed; he’s doubling down!!!
I think he upped the number because he has to factor in all the new regs from the O’Biden admin. I wish I was joking but there were a lot of bad regs implemented these past four years.

The problem stems from the thinking that “inflation” means price-increases, but the increase of prices is the consequence of the currency losing value due to the adding to the currency supply (the increase of currency is the inflation.) Price increases often times do come from the inflated currency, but always, obviously. Supply and demand still play a role, at times.

My very elderly mom was absorbing the nightly news tonight from one of the broadcast channels, don’t know or care which, it doesn’t matter, they all sing from the same sheet, about how these air traffic controllers are not hired on race or gender or whatever, they are all so well screened, qualified, and trained, blah blah…
Well, I have applied to be an air traffic controller three times out of curiosity, just to see what would happen. All were long ago. I am very proud to have a very hard to get engineering degree from one of the very top departments in any engineering field, a pilot license, and a record of leadership everywhere I’ve ever been.
Never heard a word from them.
Also, I don’t think ATC is a principle cause of the DC crash.
Maybe not a principle cause, but IMHO, a significant contributing factor. (unenforced separation procedures, imprecise communications, lack of situational awareness)
Yes for the Vertical speed component, several hundred knots total. Clearly under high power. Engines audible in video from Mr. Van Hook.
Last reported ground speed was 246 kts at 675 feet. Aerodynamic drag must have been high, just based on the engine sounds. An unreliable air speed estimate would be 275 kts.
As it was departing, altitude would have been under 10000 feet, so it would have been limited by regulations to 250 kt.
Thus, it nosed over and flew into the ground without being slowed.
I have to believe the pilots were no longer alive at impact, not that they could have influenced the outcome. I have to quit now.
Yeah. For anybody here who is not a jet pilot or a boat captain, that’s well over 300 mph.

A female reporter for the Legacy Media asked if there was there anything China, Canada, and Mexico could do to forestall his implementation of tariffs tomorrow.
Trump answered, “No. Nothing.”
Tomorrow came and the the tariffs were put in place.
A few days ago the president of Columbia sent a scathing letter to Trump absolutely refusing to accept the return of illegal aliens from his country.
Trump replied that Columbia’s refusal would mean a 25% to 50% tariff on all Columbian goods shipped to the U.S. (Columbia is the biggest supplier of roses to the U.S. and Valentine’s Day is coming soon).
A day or two later the Columbian government sent their presidential jet to retrieve some of the illegals.
Today, another reporter asked about Panama’s refusal to negotiate the return of the Panama Canal to the U.S.
Trump replied that we didn’t give the canal to China, we gave it to Panama and since Panama violated their agreement with us, “We’re gonna take it back!”
Oh did I forget to mention the precision military strikes Trump ordered on ISIS today? The President says those strikes were very successful.
I have no reason to doubt him…and this is just the tip of the iceberg of all the good things he’s done.

I spent about 45 minutes on a call with a former Blackhawk pilot who is currently a pilot for a major carrier. His assessment is that the crash was likely due to a cascading series of errors in part due to inadequate disclosure from the Tower about the location and altitude of the regional aircraft compounded by inadequate staffing in the Tower, and the diminished situational awareness of the pilot of the Blackhawk due to the use of night vision goggles.
He further explained that automated flight sensors are generally turned off below 1,000 feet as Visual Flight Rules apply and automated warnings and systems are considered distractions and/or otherwise increase risk.
He explained that the Blackhawk test runs are necessary to prepare for the potential need to evacuate the Pres/VP and others in the hierarchy of command to the airport and/or secret bunkers in the event of an enemy attack.
I found his assessment to be extremely credible, which leads me to believe that this was most certainly a tragic accident.
In the conversation, he also expressed his concern about how the FAA fails to act with sufficient urgency to address serious safety issues that pilots and others have raised for years until ‘blood is shed.’ He explained that the FAA’s dual missions to promote air travel and safeguard the skies are in conflict, and lead to long delays in implementing important safety changes in protocols and equipment as carriers push back against investing capital and/or introducing new procedures that cost money and/or time.
He gave me a number of such examples from the past where the FAA delayed acting on pilot concerns until planes went down.
He explained that the FAA has been captured by the airline industry, much like the FDA has been inappropriately captured and influenced by the Pharma lobby.
While he generally believes that Air Traffic Control does ‘a great job,’ he also expressed agreement with @realDonaldTrump
in how DEI has injected itself into ATC and in pilot recruitment.
He gave examples of having to take over the controls within moments of landing to avoid a crash landing when a co-pilot with inadequate experience, training and capabilities was too quickly advanced into the cockpit to meet DEI goals. He also said the pilot shortage is real and we need to recruit more candidates.
All of the above create a real opportunity for change in U.S. aviation in the Trump administration and speak to the importance of the selection of new leadership for the FAA and a focus on excellence and meritocracy rather than meeting quota goals.
I have always believed that good comes from the bad. Let’s not let the 67 souls who lost their lives die in vain. Let’s make sure this tragedy is a catalyst for important and rapid improvements in US aviation.

I spent most of my life in NE Philadelphia close to where the plane crashed. (Recently moved to Bucks County) Very busy area at rush hour. Cars and houses were on fire. Gas lines were on fire. 6 people on the medical plane. The patient was a little girl.
A piece of the plane flew through a diner window and hit a customer in the head.

Our entire public safety infrastructure is in jeopardy because the people “in charge” have put profits and ideology above actual merit based, proven metrics of how to best serve and protect the law abiding, tax-paying citizens!

Don’t know how pilot’s NVG’s work but infantry infrared NVG’s would’ve been overpowered by all the city lights as well as the airliner’s bright lights. All those lights would’ve “bloomed” in the NVG’s as super bright spots. It’s very hard to the helo pilot didn’t (1) see the airliner lights directly in front of his/her craft, (2) remove the NVG’s to prevent retina damage, (3) see the airliner.
Three things:
First, NVGs are not actually “infrared” All they do is amplify the visible light spectrum, with just a smidge of spillover into the “near IR” spectrum.
Second, landing and taxi lights on aircraft are very directional, or all the pilots at every airport would be blinded. They light up (and are visible to) objects in front, not objects approaching from the side.
Third, there is no “retina damage” from NVGs. Ever. That is pure Hollywood. The image you see through the goggles is usually powered by aaa batteries. If the light source is too bright, the NVGs crank down the gain to prevent damage to themselves, not your eyeballs.
That is the problem. NVGs in a brightly lit area mask all the detail, like the side view of the CRJ you are about to hit.

That’s not the ATC’s fault. That’s just on the copter people.
The helo’s are limited to 200 ft there. 300ft brought them on exact level of plane.
The lack of a 2nd crew chief on the Blackhawk which might have put eyes out the left side of the helo likely would have prevented it as well

Flying a helicopter requires a lot of strength in the leg muscles. I know I was on a jury that had to address the problem and the helicopter pilot was a male. My 1st question would be should ladies be flying helicopters. Men having babies. Women flying copters.

Good analysis and matches what I heard from my friend who flew those routes for several years doing presidential patrols. I also spoke to my friend who was an airline Captain, turned lawyer, worked for FAA legal, then went back to airline Captain. She was sure the ATC instructions were insufficient. It is mandatory to give the direction “Traffic 2:00 at 400′ descemnding” rather than the abbreviated version used by the controller “Do you have the traffic ?” So the fact that it is mandatory not discretionary means some clear legal liability for the government.
Big question in everyone’s mind is why the helicopter was at 300′.
Also I have heard reports that the ATC instructed the helicopter to ‘maintain heading’ — which would be a big mistake on ATC’s part.
A quick note of clarification: The TCAS systems display traffic on an indicator in the cockpit. The RAs – Resolution Advisories – are turned off or disabled below certain altitudes because traffic cannot exactly “descend” when they are 200′ However, the display shows and one can see the target of other aircraft. I notice that the helicopter was 200′ for quite a while and then started climbing shortly before impact. If he was on an assigned heading, I wonder if he saw the traffic on the display and initiated a climb in an attempt to avoid descending traffic ?
Those of us who were not in the cockpit will never know.
Looking forward to learning more from the actual investigation findings like everyone else.
Your friend is right about the FAA being totally captured by the airline lobbyists. Pilots complained for years about hte garbage scows parked off the end of the runways at La Guardia because of all the birds hanging around the scows, but no one listened because the high rent people didn’t like the smell of garbage. After Sully demonstrated the problems of dual flameouts after bird strikes on takeoff, someone finally got around to moving the scows.

The problem stems from the thinking that “inflation” means price-increases, but the increase of prices is the consequence of the currency losing value due to the adding to the currency supply (the increase of currency is the inflation.) Price increases often times do come from the inflated currency, but always, obviously. Supply and demand still play a role, at times.

My very elderly mom was absorbing the nightly news tonight from one of the broadcast channels, don’t know or care which, it doesn’t matter, they all sing from the same sheet, about how these air traffic controllers are not hired on race or gender or whatever, they are all so well screened, qualified, and trained, blah blah…
Well, I have applied to be an air traffic controller three times out of curiosity, just to see what would happen. All were long ago. I am very proud to have a very hard to get engineering degree from one of the very top departments in any engineering field, a pilot license, and a record of leadership everywhere I’ve ever been.
Never heard a word from them.

Yes for the Vertical speed component, several hundred knots total. Clearly under high power. Engines audible in video from Mr. Van Hook.
Last reported ground speed was 246 kts at 675 feet. Aerodynamic drag must have been high, just based on the engine sounds. An unreliable air speed estimate would be 275 kts.
As it was departing, altitude would have been under 10000 feet, so it would have been limited by regulations to 250 kt.
Thus, it nosed over and flew into the ground without being slowed.
I have to believe the pilots were no longer alive at impact, not that they could have influenced the outcome. I have to quit now.

Tomorrow came and the the tariffs were put in place.
A few days ago the president of Columbia sent a scathing letter to Trump absolutely refusing to accept the return of illegal aliens from his country.
Trump replied that Columbia’s refusal would mean a 25% to 50% tariff on all Columbian goods shipped to the U.S. (Columbia is the biggest supplier of roses to the U.S. and Valentine’s Day is coming soon).
A day or two later the Columbian government sent their presidential jet to retrieve some of the illegals.
Today, another reporter asked about Panama’s refusal to negotiate the return of the Panama Canal to the U.S.
Trump replied that we didn’t give the canal to China, we gave it to Panama and since Panama violated their agreement with us, “We’re gonna take it back!”
