When I was 17 and a young girl with an adventurous and courageous heart, I left my Indiana home, packed up my 1986 Mercury Cougar and moved to Southern California.
I was an outdoor education group leader in Lake Arrowhead, California up by Snow Valley and Big Bear. Kids would come from the Southern California schools – always ill-equipped for the colder weather up in the mountains – and we would teach them orienteering, botany, astronomy, hiking, crafting, campfires, and camaraderie. The kids would always end up wearing our clothes, because they simply weren’t prepared for the snow that would fall up there and the temperature drop. Some had never been to the mountains, spending their lives in the warm valleys.
The fifth graders stayed a week, and the third graders would only stay three days. 100% of the time, they didn’t want to go home. No radios. No televisions. 10:1 student to leader ratio. Adults that listened to them. Told them stories. Taught them to be brave on their all-day nature hikes on Thursdays. We were constantly teaching them awareness of their surroundings, how to mark paths, and identify land markers, so they get oriented. North, South, East, West. Which leaves of the trees you could eat or brew in a tea. Occasionally, down to Deep Creek where the ladybugs had a mating season in March. On the all-day hikes, we would leave them in a group deep in the woods – venture ourselves down the path a bit – and one by one, each student would travel on their own to their cabin leader to prove they could make it by themselves. Never lost one.
At night, on Thursdays, they had their cabin skits for a talent show. One boy, who we were all warned ahead of time was a terrible trouble maker, a terrible student, and a never-do-well human being (we were on high alert anticipating his arrival) – gobsmacked all of his teachers because he wrote a song for his cabin and could play the guitar by ear. He was like a little Kurt Cobain. We cabin leaders glared at the teachers and were so proud of that kid for showing everyone that his Divine Purpose was just different than everyone else’s. We were so inspired and I hope, somehow, that kid knows that he influenced many future adults to pause before judging a youth’s worth.
We loved those kids and they loves us – our ever-so-brief mentorship came to an end too soon each week.
We’d always goof off and pull the rubber mattresses off the bunks and go flying down the hills in the snow. I had to bail one time as I was headed for a tree stump sticking out of the snow – flash light, boots went flying, as I bailed, and my ride scooted off down the slope! So much fun.
Another time, I found a dead baby bat. Perfectly preserved and flawless. So beautiful. Bats are so good for the ecosystem as they eat multitudes of mosquitoes. This baby bat had knocked itself out flying into the lodge wall and didn’t survive, but it was a perfectly preserved specimen. So, of course, we took it and put it way up high in one of the naturalist’s mail box, so she would have to reach up to get her mail and SHREAK!!!! it’s a bat! Hilarious!
When the students went home on Fridays, the cabin leaders would all go down and party in Mexico for the weekend.
I played “America” A LOT going up and down that mountain and up and down that coast. So many good memories. So much coconut scented sun screen in the warmth and in the cold. Playing hard from sun up to sundown. Made little money, but made a wealth of memories. Hope those kids all remember it well, too. A youth well spent.

My British husband used to take bus tours into the South of France long ago. One of the places he stopped was Grease sued so much perfume is made.
He brought back for me a small bottle of “Fragonard”.

I’m in absolute awe, Corny!
I recently came across another communication network. It’s sort of like ham radio but no license is required. It’s called Meshtastic. I don’t know much about it but it seems to be an open source network and once you have it set up that it doesn’t require cell towers or the internet.
As I read more about it, it seems to be used by hikers, people that live where the grid goes down and preppers. The messages sent out can be read by everyone on the mesh or they can be encrypted. It uses text only and up to about 260 characters.
Meshtastic is a brand name for hardware/ software system that operates in the People’s Band. It does use wi-fi and Bluetooth for local connectivity within your house/car, but utilizes the 900Mhz UHF band for peer-to-peer comms over distances up to about 150 miles.

While it does not need cell towers or the internet, it DOES require multiple installations / users to expand the coverage area.

Helium is another brand of hardware system that operates in the People’s Band.

These are UFH radio (handheld mostly) that can create a “mesh” network that can be accessed by anyone within a geographically broad area depending on terrain and number / distribution of “repeaters” (nodes).
The primary applications for these “People’s Band” networks appears to be commercial and civil. There are a variety of different sensors that broadcast on the frequencies in this band.
One major application of the Helium network appears to be tracking –

We’ve had ham radio licenses for about 30 years. Before cell phones we used them extensively.
Once you have passed the exam, licenses are good for 10 years – renewable with a form and a fee. We found them to be indispensable at one time, and I fear they could be again.
I didn’t know a transistor from a resistor, but was able to pass the test with a just a little studying.
It might be worth investigating.

It seemed an honorable party with left wing principled’ intentions’ for some years but it changed, especially over the last few decades to being more woke than anything else, and old principles were discarded ( they would deny this of course) as they became more like the Liberals who were/are cynical and feathered their own nests. (Think ‘Trudeau’ of the Federal Liberals who is a Globalist twit.)

Awwww! I’m sure I’ve told you that we had a squirrel infestation about 15 years ago. One morning I got up, stumbled into the bathroom – and 3 of them were doing the backstroke in the toilet! They had dug in under the tub and decided to go for a swim. We used one if those “grabbers” old farts such as myself use to pull them to safety. Rehomed them at the Santa Cruz River Squirrel Resort and Spa. Hope they are still enjoying life!

If you are like me, you hunt for good deals all year long. I usually start in July, but I’m later this year because frankly – we are all broke! For me, it’s a bit harder, because Savannah is older now and she has very few needs and thus very few wants! She is an incredibly content individual and I am most glad for it. She’s happy with some nice decorative journals, new stationery, and art pens. I can Christmas shop for her at Staples! LOL
Anywho… this season, two of our technicians were gifted with baby girls. We have given them beautiful patchwork QUILTS that I have been purchasing at Cracker Barrel, of all places! They also have the most ADORABLE children’s clothing. Very nice, well-made, and unique little gifts.
Right now – they are having a huge sale on their quilts. The queen size runs about $129, plus tax, but right now they are on sale 25 to 70% off!!! I just purchased my daughter one marked down from $129 to $38!!!! Found one for myself, too, down to $80.
My boss’s grandmother used to hand sew everyone quilts. Since she has passed away, he like to honor her memory by gifting our employees infants quilts that the family can use for “tummy time” together. I head to Hobby Lobby, pick up a really nice wicker storage basket, a few little incidentals like those cute little plastic compartment meal trays, or baby rattlers, and incidentals, and make a really lovely gift basket out of the blankets and cute outfits.
If you’re thinking of Christmas and keeping friends and family “warm” – thought you all might want to look into this. This sale is inside the stores – so I don’t think you can go online and buy on sale, but you can at least check out the variety. They are cotton and machine washable.
