Saturday October 24th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    The Teaching Of Self-esteem

    By Pastor Paul M. Sadler

    Scripture Reading:

“Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince [refute] the gainsayers.” — Titus 1:9

Satan never rests in his insatiable desire to corrupt the Word of God. A case in point is the present-day teaching of self-love, self-esteem and self-worth. The influence of this unsound doctrine has nearly permeated every strata of Christendom, including the Grace Movement. Like the beat of a drum, this theme is heard almost constantly from the pulpits of America and frequently appears on the pages of Christian literature. Beware when you hear or read: “It is important to feel good about yourself,” “Learn to love yourself,” “Probe your innermost self to understand why you think and feel as you do,” “God sent His son to die for you because you are of great value.”

On the surface these phrases may seem commendable, but in reality they are diametrically opposed to the Scriptures. The above has been weighed in the balance and found to be wanting. For example: “The heart [innermost self] is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9). Paul concurred when he said, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh, [old nature or self]) dwelleth no good thing” (Rom. 7:18).

The old man (self) is at enmity against God. He hates God and the things of God and left to himself he will not seek God. The Scriptures, from beginning to end, speak with a unified voice that the old nature is rotten to the core (See Rom. 3:9-18).

Consequently, our old man (self) has been crucified with Christ. Paul made reference to this when he wrote to the Galatians, “I am crucified with Christ [i.e. his old man]: nevertheless I live [Paul’s new nature]; yet NOT I [self], but Christ liveth in me.” We are to put off the old nature and put on the new, which is created in holiness and righteousness (Eph. 4:22-24). It is futile to improve one’s self- image, especially since God abhors any attempt to do so. Rather, we are to conform ourselves to the image of His dear Son. Thus, those of the household of faith are to live accordingly:

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let us esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:3-5).

Self takes great pleasure in acclaim, indulgence, approval and praise. It glories in all these things. But are we not robbing God when self is esteemed more highly than His glory?

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, AND YE ARE NOT YOUR OWN? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (I Cor. 6:19,20).

Shall we permit the “love of one’s self” doctrine to overshadow the love of God in Christ Jesus? God forbid! May God help us to stand against this insidious teaching that essentially robs God of the glory that is rightfully due Him.

Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

    Romans 3:9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17 And the way of peace have they not known:
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

    Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
    23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

This 13 String guitar was made by Lucio Núñez. The guitar is tuned like a baroque lute, and in this case (Weiss Suite 34 in Dm) f d a F D A G F E D C Bb A.

I never heard of the luthier Lucio Nunez before. Nice guitars….
      A quote from his website
“Music is the ultimate goal of the luthier’s art and craft,” says Lucio, “and just like music, lutherie depends on both science and mystery. The space between one note and another, the way we work with sound frequencies–that is physics. But the way music touches our souls–that is a mystery.”

      • Garrison Hall says:

I have one of his guitars. It’s a beautifully voiced instrument with both volume and dynamic range. His current instruments, I’m told, have lattice-braced tops.

  4. TreeClimber says:

I’m coming to the Treehouse today to ask for personal help. This morning my husband woke up with a fever and a bad cough. Per his company’s policy, he called in sick. An hour later he got a call back… don’t bother coming in Monday. Now, by God’s grace, he actually got another job offer yesterday: contract work, so no benefits and no warning of when it will end (contract work is always a call at night saying “don’t come back tomorrow,” or sometimes even just the badge being revoked which you find out upon arrival.) Still, it’s a way better landing pad after being let go than, say, nothing at all.

But here’s the problem: he doesn’t start until the first, due to background checks, drug tests, yada yada, and then they’ll hold his first paycheck – we’re hoping he’s going to be paid weekly. In a week, we’re going to be in a $700 pickle. Our water bill is always about $100, and we’re going to be coming up about $600 short on rent. We’re fine on food – I stocked up on cans like crazy during hurricane season – and we’ll be okay with diapers (and even if we’re not, the local crisis pregnancy center is open again and they’ll help us with that.) We can probably get family to help us with the water bill, but I don’t know what we’ll do about rent.

We’re near Charleston, SC. Do any local Treepers know where we can go for rent help? (I know someone is going to suggest the Salvation Army, so I’m just going to go ahead and say that for some reason we don’t qualify – we went to them for help before when my husband was briefly unemployed and we got a “sorry, no can do.” Also the management company will not work with anyone – at the start of COVID they sent out an email saying that no accommodations will be made and to go apply for unemployment if you can’t make your rent. They already evicted a bunch of people.)

    • Linda K. says:

I can’t give you rent, maybe someone can help out. But, when my kids were small we had some money trouble. Grocery stores are always hiring and they have benefits for even part time workers. If you could get a job that would supplement your husband’s work you might be ok.
If you work 24 hours a week and pick up benefits for your family, plus a paycheck, plus you are with the kids during the day and work an evening shift three times a week when your husband is home with the kids, it might work?

    • Katiecoo says:

Our small church’s Helping Hands program has changed from giving disposable diapers to cloth diapers, diaper pins, and protective plastic outer diaper pants. It was a decision made in these hard times to stretch our budget, as well as that of new parents. Old-fashioned, yes; but the savings sure do help.

      (Amazon and WalMart sell them.)

    • Garrison Hall says:

Contact a temp agency. Temp work often has flexible hours so you can work around your home schedule. Have you thought home health care? Again, flexible hours. I’m friends with a women who does the work and genuinely likes it. Then there’s restaurant work. The restaurants I frequent have all lost staff and are having trouble hiring new food servers. At a high volume restaurant, food servers make decent money just on tips. Good luck, TreeClimber.

    • TreeClimber says:

Just wanted to reiterate: he’ll be working again next week. But by the time his check comes in, it’ll be too late, rent will be past due. By the time I were able to apply and get hired anywhere, the same problem. Also I’m a SAHM, and we have no one to watch our babies: that’s solely my job. Also we only have one car, so even if I could find childcare I wouldn’t have transportation.

      • dogsmaw says:

Talk to your landlord and give as much as you can for the rent…check out your utility company’s website to see if they have a program that helps make a one time payment. We have a charitable organization in our area that will give immediate aid to familys in need. Sometimes a church will also provide necessities.

      • Linda K. says:

You work when your husband is home with the babies and you are home with the babies when he works. It is hard but it will get better.

    • Ok, here is an idea, everyone. I have a few old rings I don’t wear. They are damaged and in bad shape, but they contain 6.4 grams of gold. (Silver also is higher than in the past.) I can get about $100 for them by selling to the pawn shop. Then I can get a money order and send it to this family. I am committing to do this.

Do you have old jewelry that is, say, 10 K gold, that you should get rid of? If so, then we only need 5-6 more people to do something similar.

Treeclimber has posted many insightful and intelligent comments here, and she has diligently exhausted all reasonable possibilities to get help.

    • stella says:

I don’t intend to be mean or rude, but this isn’t the first time that you have more or less begged for money on our platform, and it seems to be paying off for you. To me, that is taking advantage of good-hearted patriots. If you do this again, you may lose your ability to post here.

Many, if not most, of us have had tough economic times in our lives. We find a way to get by. Sell something. Go to work temporarily. Your husband could do day work, or you could. It’s nice to be a stay at home mom, but not something I was ever able to do, because I had to work to put food on the table and pay the bills.

EVERYONE ELSE: Someone has offered to pay her bills for her.

    • stella says:

PS: You can’t be evicted for being a week or two late on your rent.

      • P says:

Good info at this site — although it is for WV, but still might be helpful.

Stella, I don’t think you were being mean or rude. I used to give Visa Gift Cards to help people out only to learn those can be sold for cash so stopped doing that. Many people that I thought needed help (and they probably really did) seemed able to buy cigarettes. I asked one person how much cigarettes cost, they said 6.00 a pack!! (I used to smoke about 10 cigs a day and quit the very same day they went to 1.00 a pack back in 1985! LOL that price raise was the best thing that happened to me for sure.) So now, I no longer give money or Gift Cards to people (although I do breakdown once in awhile), and instead, I give to Operation Exodus USA which is a God-ordained ministry to help His people come home to Israel.

I also believe the best way to solve money problems is to be faithful with tithing to the Lord. And I love the testimony of the man who I think ran a home for boys in possibly Texas and had nothing to give the kids one time for their evening meal. He had them all sit down at the table anyways and thank God for His provision even though there was nothing on the table to eat. After their prayer, a knock came on the door and there was someone standing there with food for them. That man’s trust in God has encouraged me many times.

Psalm 37:3 “Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.”

Psalm 73:28 “But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Thy works.”

Psalm 118:8 “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.”

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Proverbs 29:25 “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.”

One thing, too, I’ve come to understand is that only God knows what He is trying to do in a person’s life and my stepping in to solve their problem may hinder His work in their life.

      • TreeClimber says:

I’m not sure in what state that applies, but we have nearly been evicted once for being 6 days late. I’ve read the lease: it’s unfortunately possible.

I will certainly try not to come here to ask for help again. As for “going to work,” that’s not the problem: once he gets that first check, we’ll be fine. It’s the gap between checks that’s going to bite us, and considering he’s starting next week, I wouldn’t have time to find a job, go through background checks, do the drug test, be hired, and then get my first check before he did. The amount is not the problem: the gap is the problem.

And no. I don’t have anything I can sell. I’ve already sold everything I have that’s valuable during other difficult times. This isn’t exactly my first time.

We could also ask the Asians cooks to stop preparing them for meals, but then that wouldn’t eliminate the whole threat either. With the Chinese admittedly having identified over 70 coronaviruses and having an active pathogen ‘defense’ program that’s heavily overseen by the Chinese military I don’t think we’ve seen the last of those mysterious, periodic virus infections.

        • Garrison Hall says:

Yes, China’s been working diligently to develop asymmetric warfare skills involving strategic and tactical attacks that lurk just below the threshold of a clear military operation. When I heard that China locked down travel to their own cities while allowing travel to us it was pretty clear that its military had weaponized their own people so the covid-virus could be more easily spread. If you read between the lines of his political comments, it’s obvious that Trump and our military is very much aware of this.

          • czarowniczy says:

I remember back in the 80s when some forward-thinking strategists were having us read Sun Tzu, telling us that China was our future concern and not Russia.

Prognosticators in DoD, State, CIA and other places were telling us that Russia was on the verge of imploding and that without continued US support it would collapse but certain groups in Congress and the government felt it had to be kept afloat. You’ll notice that once the Russian balloon popped both the US and China, free from having to deal with the phony Russian threat, both had economic explosions.
We helped the Chinese military from early on, directly and indirectly, putting them on steady ground to be a balance against Russia, making me wonder if our Congressional/Presidential 5th columnists were working much sooner than thought.
They had and have a robust WMD defense program and it was in place for the COVID pandemic, they locked down some 1.4-BILLION people most ricky-tik while Democratic styates in the US couldn’t (and still can’t) get it together with a fraction of that population…someone had a plan in place.
There has been a few books by Chinese military strategists published in the US regarding how they plan to defeat the US. One of the best is ‘Unrestricted Warfare’ and it touches on how China can use political warfare against the US, get a copy and read between those lines. Makes you wonder how their tactics could be ignored by so many in Congress and DoD…though there’s a lot of Clinton and Obama people in both.

      • czarowniczy says:

The abolition of personal property (i.e., real estate) has been a UN issue for decades, I can remember one of my COs reading a piece out loud to us about the UN bitching over Europeans and especially Americans owning ‘excessive amounts’ of personal land that could be better put to ‘community’ use.

This virus has been suspicious since before Day One here, as I’ve said there were too many (for me) coincidences in its US course. Aside from the virus being used as a perfect reason for a Rat Administration and Congress to further limit states’ rights (“Look how miserably the states handled it without effective Federal oversight!”) it’s a great tool for thinning the herd.

“Now thanks be to God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ.” 2 Cor. ii. 14

The viewpoint of a worker for God must not be as near the highest as he can get, it must be THE highest. Be careful to maintain strenuously God’s point of view, it has to be done every day, bit by bit; don’t think on the finite. No outside power can touch the viewpoint.

The viewpoint to maintain is that we are here for one purpose only, viz., to be captives in the train of Christ’s triumphs. We are not in God’s showroom, we are here to exhibit one thing – the absolute captivity of our lives to Jesus Christ. How small the other points of view are – I am standing alone battling for Jesus; I have to maintain the cause of Christ, and hold this fort for Him. Paul says – I am in the train of a conqueror, and it does not matter what the difficulties are, I am always led in triumph. Is this idea being worked out practically in us? Paul’s secret joy was that God took him, a red-handed rebel against Jesus Christ, and made him a captive, and now that is all he is here for. Paul’s joy was to be a captive of the Lord, he had no other interest in heaven or in earth. It is a shameful thing for a Christian to talk about getting the victory. The Victor ought to have got us so completely that it is His victory all the time, and we are more than conquerors through Him.

“For we are unto God a sweet saviour of Christ.” We are enwheeled with the odour of Jesus, and wherever we go we are a wonderful refreshment to God.

It appears the plan covered a niche, a select few?

    • rrick says:

tl;dr Because they are told to be fearful

ts easy to explain. The information is presented in a way to provoke fear. Fear is irrational but it can be guided and controlled. Subjective opinion is spun up as truth, factual data is often omitted. Too, most people do not like change.
This is especially true when it affects their personal life in a substantive way but they have little to none control.

Fear is an emotional response. Like other emotions, it can be used and abused. Madison Avenue ad agencies know this quite well. Media and Congress have learned it too.

Why OdummyCare was not good for many is because of many sometimes diverse elements. One was the lie that if you like your plan you can keep your plan, if you like your Dr you can keep your Dr. Price of coverage went up but in many covered services went down. Another was that before passage, various politicians, she-beast included, bellowed that forty million people were without coverage. After passage, forty million previously without coverage did get coverage. But it was not the same 40 million persons. The numbers of who were covered before and who were covered after are very much the same. The explanation is some of those who had been covered were no longer covered and those who hadn’t been covered were now covered.

People generally project their identity or status when thinking of other persons and that opens the ability to be manipulated.

(Ex: if I mentioned, ‘other citizens’, how would you think of who those other citizens are? And how closely would your perception of those unknown others match how you identify yourself? In this way, people can be manipulated.
When speaking of ‘other citizens’, but in the context of, ‘other citizens without adequate health coverage’, people can be manipulated to think those others are somehow disadvantaged and that isn’t fair, even though some of those people actively decided for themselves to not carry coverage or they self-insure or the plan they do have does not fit under the term ‘adequate’ as defined by the speaker. (Often they won’t mention their definition, rather they would let you to define their words by your own perceptions.) More so, the term, adequate is rather nebulous; what works for one may be inadequate for another.)

So Randy and I will have some real home cooking to enjoy while were on this trip. Vegetable soup, like Chili, is one of those things that’s best after a night in the fridge to allow the flavors to fuse. My ex-fiancee always makes at least 2 gallons of those single pot dishes and we share it with the neighbors and still have enough that we often end up freezing it for later. The meat is a big Sirloin tip roast made in the crock pot that we ate for dinner and the rest used in the soup the next day.

    lilbirdee12’s prayer:

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You. Also, we pray for Angels to protect and support our Sundance as he works for justice and peace.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
