Stunning Bounce – May Jobs Gains of 2.5 Million Shocks Everyone…

Jumpin’ ju-ju bones, it’s raining winnamins ! ~ Analysts and economists were predicting May jobs report would show losses of around 7 to 8 million jobs in May.  That’s what everyone suspected, and why they were stunned this morning to find out the U.S. economy actually added, yes ADDED, 2.5 million jobs.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics released the good news data earlier today and shocked everyone. However, the results are really not that surprising when you think about how successful the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was.  First this video is funny:

.

[BLS RELEASE] – […] Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2.5 million in May, reflecting a limited resumption of economic activity that had been curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic and efforts to contain it.

  • In May, employment in leisure and hospitality increased by 1.2 million, following losses of 7.5 million in April and 743,000 in March.
  • Construction employment increased by 464,000 in May, gaining back almost half of April’s decline (-995,000).
  • Employment increased by 424,000 in education and health services in May, after a decrease of 2.6 million in April.
  • In May, employment in retail trade rose by 368,000, after a loss of 2.3 million in April.
  • Employment increased in the other services industry in May (+272,000), following a decline of 1.3 million in April.
  • In May, manufacturing employment rose by 225,000, with gains about evenly split between the durable and nondurable goods components.
  • Professional and business services added 127,000 jobs in May, after shedding 2.2 million jobs in April.
  • Financial activities added 33,000 jobs over the month, following a loss of 264,000 jobs in April.
  • Wholesale trade employment was up by 21,000 in May, largely reflecting job gains in its nondurable goods component (+13,000).  (link)

“Today’s report shows much higher job creation and lower unemployment than expected, reflecting that the re-opening of the economy in May was earlier, and more robust, than projected. Millions of Americans are still out of work, and the Department remains focused on bringing Americans safely back to work and helping States deliver unemployment benefits to those who need them. However, it appears the worst of the coronavirus’s impact on the nation’s job markets is behind us.”

~ Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia

The small business PPP program was designed to keep U.S. workers attached to their employers.  The treasury funds became grants if the funds were used to cover payroll expenses and retain the employees within the business.

If the business did not retain or rehire their employees they would have to pay back the treasury under the terms of the PPP fund.   That PPP rule was a massive incentive to re-hire anyone who was laid-off in the first several weeks of the shutdown.

I would suggest the majority of the re-hires, the jobs data that is shocking everyone today, is actually from small/medium businesses and directly relates to the way Treasury Secretary Mnuchin put the funding mechanism together by using the FDIC network.

Great plan.  Great execution. Great results.

bullnuke: Regarding California, all but 7 of California’s counties are now in Phase 3 which means restaurants, shopping malls, casinos, hair salons, manicurists, etc., etc. are now back up and running in most of the state. All but one of the excluded counties are in the SF Bay Area (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo and Santa Clara). So, I think California is largely participating in the uptick and I can personally confirm that companies are actively hiring… especially in construction and the tech businesses.

The Blue State Riots not only prove the disingenuousness of the WuFlu Knockdown, but will generate incontrovertible proof that the “intimacy” of the “diverse” “protesters” has created not a single spike in either the number of cases or the lethality thereof.

Well, unless the Governors of the Communist held areas sent in known carriers of the disease, then we might see a spike in cases, but any increase in morbidity will be attributable to the work of their own foul hands.

For plywood we need loggers, log trucks & drivers, log mills, plywood manufactures, and lumber yards, so there is a lot more employees needed back at work. Although here in East Texas I haven’t seen any slow down in log trucks on the highway so maybe they didn’t need to social distance in the woods.

I think President Trump is the Yogi Berra of politics. Whenever it looks the darkest , somehow the situations gets turned around.
    Let’s see, he’s survived:
    -an attempted coup,
    -an impeachment,
-devastating leaks from the government bureaucracy,
-contentious relations/ anew Cold War with China
    -a pandemic,
    -multiple firings of cabinet members,
    -a hostile media,
    -RINOS
    -an adversarial Congress
    -massive unemployment
    -a stock market crash
    -mass riots

However, I don’t think he has Yogi’s horseshoe, I think he has the hand of God on him.

The job numbers are stunning, and a tremendous weapon for the President against the Left. But is it big business “recouping” from the Covid hiatus or what is the status of small businesses? Are many of these are closed, gone forever, or…? And this great job news will give the Left the impetus to REALLY crank up the street violence this weekend before a recovering economy buries them. No wonder they promote lawlessness. How can any small business operate in cities run by mobs — and not the Mafia, of course — but actual street mobs looting and pillaging?

And old friend of mine died and his viewing was in a rest home in downtown Columbus, Ohio, tonight, and mutual friends are telling me they’re afraid to go downtown. In Columbus, Ohio. (Apparently the major and city council say they have voted to join the protestors.) Meanwhile, the idiot mayor of D.C. is trying her best to open the Capital up to a rampaging mob tomorrow.
In other words, now it gets interesting. Esper, the Sec of Defense, has been quite revealing in the past couple of days. He needs fired forthwith. Marched out by MPs. What is he and Obama’s generals planning? A true coup d’état? Mattis and Kelly have beclowned themselves. I’d like to ask Mattis, “So how much of your country do the Communist-herded mobs have to burn down before you give your imprimatur to send in the Marines?”

I believe the root cause here is not so much increased demand (although that may be a part of it), but supply chain disruption. Most of the inexpensive bicycles imported into the U.S. are manufactured in the Chinese rust belt areas of Wuhan and Hubei which were shut down for 2 months, along with severe shipping disruptions from those areas. By contrast, the availability of higher-end bicycles that now come largely from Taiwan seem to be in ample supply, but these brands are mostly sold in specialty bike stores (and cost about twice as much). D.C. is defenseless now against the horde descending on it. I can imagine the headlines if the President fires Esper now. But he needs to.

    From voanews:
WASHINGTON – The Pentagon will be sending back the remaining 900 active-duty troops who were sent to the Washington D.C. area to potentially respond to civil unrest, and they are expected to start heading back to their home bases, a U.S. official told Reuters.

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the order had been signed by U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper and that the troops would be heading back to Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Drum in New York.

But just looking at it, considered coolly, now would be a good time for a coup. After the stupid virus fiasco and everyone getting used to be “lockdown”, and now EVERYONE on edge because of the ceaseless rioting and helplessness of the authorities (the apparent helplessness, but it has clearly been ordered on the police and Guard to “stand down” by the Lefties who run the urban areas that are burning down). Now is the time for the snake to strike.

The President must know he can’t count on Esper, but hasn’t fired him or countermanded Esper’s orders to leave the Capital defenseless — what Guardsmen there are are disarmed — and note these are from all over the country — and actually turned out into the streets. I.e., those most likely to resist are being removed. Maybe, in theory, there are enough police around, and further out from the city, military. But what if the D.C. mayor (who seems to think she runs an independent country) orders them to stand down at the right (from our perspective, wrong) moment? Remember how Louix XVI was carried off by the mob. They had marched to Paris (sound familiar?) on October 6, 1789, and that night tried to kill Marie Antoinette. It took Layette himself, then commander of the “Garde nationale” (I’m not making this up; what a parallel!) to calm things down a bit, but the mob took the Louis X and his family to Paris. They never came out again.

If it’s not a coup it looks as close to one as I can imagine. Other than the military taking control.

I was thinking the present circumstances were really sketchy before watching her video. I was half expecting Obama to go on national TV and further whip up the protesters. When he didn’t do that, I thought, okay, maybe the goal of these protests was just to herd blacks back into the dem party. But after watching her video, I’m now thinking the purpose of Obama going on TV was just to project a calming, trustworthy attitude…. just what you’d want if someone was hoping to install you as an interim fake leader.

I means there are 1000;s of problems to overcome to stage a real military coup. Of all, I think the biggest problem would be maintaining local control after the change. There’s a percentage of us who would never ever be convinced no matter what was said to justify it. They could show a video of Trump strangling children and I wouldn’t believe it. There is no getting past that their military faction or helpers would have to find us all and kill us.

With help from social media platforms they could likely make a pretty good list and maybe do a sweep over a couple of weeks, covered up by the media as “mysterious murders” or something. I don’t know. Seems like it would be very very difficult to pull off. However, maybe if the campaign were coupled with loss of comms (internet, FB, twitter, et al), it might be possible. For sure, if the internet does go down, it’s probably time to grab food and ammo and head for the hills. Would make no sense to stay home and await killers.

No doubt, the opposition would have many advantages that would be exceedingly difficult for us to overcome.

Certainly fits everything we’ve been observing.

Her prediction that Ozero would be installed as interim President during the late stages of the coup does invite even greater suspicion as to why Ozero moved into such a big mansion in DC along with VALJAR…..

      It’s almost like a command center…….

Just listening to Fox Biz, Charlie Gasparino, reporting PDJT’s polling numbers off and that Wall Street now contemplating he will not be re-elected. He said WS thought Hilliary was going to win. too, and we know how that ended. So why report such crap? Is that Fox Business now, “Let’s piss in your coffee?”

And in the delicious irony department, the number of jobs will go even further up when these democrat cities and businesses start hiring people to repair the damage done by the insurrection! Just delicious. And I’m sure federal money will be pumped into the small businesses that were harmed in these cities. Win/Win/Win!
Swooning over the Trump Administration today….

I’m as surprised as everyone but … Tuesday my oldest kid was off work and took my wife and I out to the local diner for lunch (the proprietor of which went through the place thanking everyone there for coming out) and I noticed two local businesses with help wanted signs in the window and another with an electric signboard out with the same news. So, happily surprised, but not completely so, just based on the local anecdotal evidence. (To be fair, I think I saw a couple of places that may not reopen. But there’s also the question — would they have failed anyway? You never know.) This same son went back to work ten days ago and his business has been booming which makes me think that PDJT’s talk about a rapid bounce back may not just be happy talk.

At 6 AM Las Vegas time, this morning on radio station 670 AM, Heidi Harris was chuckling for a couple hours at how wrong the “expert’s” predictions were of the jobs numbers. Then every hour & half hour, the national news distorters were groaning.

Don’t forget that all major sports have been deleted from the economy these three months. Tens of thousands of jobs lost or suspended. If any of the sports have the guts to allow fans back in whatever format, you will have another big boost to the economy.

Logistics are complicated, and blue states are reluctant to do anything to bring back normalcy. But at some point the loss of income will be an incentive. Even with some kind of virtue signalling social distance barriers or restrictions. Even a half filled arena generates big money.

Saw the video pretty bad… but I live in a retirement community.. I know there are many people who have mental deficiencies….and they could not follow directions.. could it have been handled better you betcha.. but military style orders are not questioned ….

in all fairness it would be impossible for a tactical unit to function If every member had to think every second.. do I need to question my supervisors command…

In all fairness when I saw this I said….WHY IS THE MSM REPORTING THIS…. there is nothing to be gained.. only negative press…

But then that is the sorry world we live in…

    Couple of thoughts…

    1) This recovery is being driven by Red States that lifted lock down/stay at home orders and started getting people back to work weeks ago. Tennessee is an example where the state wide “stay at home” order was lifted on April 30 and a tracking of their COVID-19 numbers show no “second wave” but a continual flattening of the curve. https://www.tn.gov/content/tn/health/cedep/ncov/data.html

    2) The PPP certainly helped and, I think, turned what would have been permanent terminations of positions into a month or two furloughs. The jobs were not going away forever and, provided the shut down was short enough, could be immediately be brought back online for work.

    3) I expect that Trump and his team will be switching gears to removing or suspending as many regulations as possible in the next 60 days to get even more businesses back and going.

    4) I expect a lot of Red States (such as Tennessee) will be wooing businesses that are currently headquartered in Blue States to pick up and move. A lot of businesses are going to be tempted to jump ship from ridiculous lock down states, over taxed states, and states that are abandoning law and order to move to somewhere more hospitable to business.

    5) The Dem’s will not tolerate any of this and will do everything they can to slow or sabotage the economy for the sake of winning in November.
