Saturday November 16th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Is The Mystery In The Old Testament?

No, of course not! Then why does Paul often quote the Old Testament to substantiate the Mystery (e.g., Rom. 15:9-12)? Let’s start in Acts 26:22, where Paul testifies:

“I continue unto this day…saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come.”

This statement seems to belie Paul’s insistence that his message was “hid from ages and from generations” (Col. 1:26). However, he explains himself in the next verse:

“That Christ should suffer, and that He should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles” (Acts 26:23).

The death and resurrection of Christ was not a mystery, nor was God’s plan to show light unto “the people” (of Israel) and “to the Gentiles.” Thus Paul is saying that while his message did not fulfill the prophets, generally speaking it did not contradict the Old Testament. We see the same in Acts 15, where the leaders in the church met to decide what to make of Paul’s new gospel.James concluded:

“Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name. And to this agree the words of the prophets…” (v. 14,15).

James didn’t say that Paul’s new message fulfilled the prophets. Rather he said it agreed with them, i.e., God always intended to visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name. Of course, according to Prophecy this was supposed to happen through Israel’s rise (Isa. 60:3), not through her fall (Rom. 11:11). Someday in the kingdom it will. But in the meantime, James could not deny that generally speaking Paul’s new message was in accord with the Old Testament.

When most New Testament writers quote the Old Testament, it is to show fulfillment of prophecy. However, when Paul quotes the Old Testament, it is to show harmony, not fulfillment.

Let’s close with an example. In Romans 10:19 Paul quotes Deuteronomy 32:21, where God vows to provoke Israel to jealousy by “a foolish nation.” This cannot be the Gentiles, for they are “the nations,” plural. Peter rather identifies the believing Jews to whom he wrote as the “holy nation ” that God originally used to provoke the apostate nation of Israel to jealousy (I Pet. 2:9 cf. Matt. 21:43; Luke 12:32) and fulfill Deuteronomy 32:21. But in the next chapter of Romans, Paul says,

“…I am the apostle of the Gentiles…if by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh…” (Rom. 11:13,14).

Here Paul declares that God was now using the Gentiles to provoke Israel to jealousy. Not in fulfillment of Deuteronomy 32:21, but certainly in harmony with it!

So while the Mystery is not in the Old Testament, Paul can quote it freely to show how his new message was in agreement with it.

    By Pastor Ricky Kurth

Romans 15:9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
10 And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.
11 And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.
12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

Acts 26:22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

Colossians 1:26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

Acts 26:23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

Acts 15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

Isaiah 60:3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Romans 11:11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

Romans 10:19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

Deuteronomy 32:21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Matthew 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Further context for Romans 10:19 shows that Paul connected the verse to subsequent verses, conspicuously by the use of the word “First” in reference to an Old Testament verse and then by listing additional Old Testament verses:

“I ask instead: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says: “I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation without understanding.” And Isaiah boldly says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me.” But as for Israel he says: “All day long I have held out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people”” (Romans 10:19-21).

In the next chapter, the matter of Israel being made jealous resurfaces, with intended means of provocation shown:
“I ask then, did they stumble that they might fall? Never may it be! But in their trespass is salvation to the Gentiles, so as to provoke them to jealousy” (Romans 11:11).

‘Paul’s new gospel’? It’s quite something to see what is conveyed in Acts 15 cast as a new message and gospel initiated solely from Paul when the chapter contains Peter essentially describing to all in verses Acts 15:7-11 (as he already had to many in Acts 10-11) the revelation of the mystery “that the Gentiles are joint-heirs, and a joint-body, and joint-partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus, through the gospel” (Eph. 3:6).

The decisions reached by the Jerusalem council, and their letter to the gentiles set forth in Acts 15, set forth the first example of the adulteration of Jesus’ message to make it comply with the norms and practices of a particular culture.

Read what the council commanded gentiles to observe. Then compare to Jesus’ own words in the sermon on the mount (Matt 5-7). Jesus said exactly the opposite of the council’s commands. This cultural adulteration started early, and the church has been concocting and enforcing man-made decrees and passing them off as Christianity ever since. Perpetual virginity, total depravity, transmogrification, predestination, on and on and on.

The Bible doesn’t just contain lessons on what to do. It also contains lessons on what NOT to do. The Old Testament is littered with the latter, as is the New but to a lesser degree. Want to know Christianity? Read Matthew 5-7 and Romans and you’re pretty much there (love God, love each other, believe in the resurrection, declare that belief out loud. Matt 5-7; Rom 10:9). Much of the rest of what we are fed is made-up cultural crap dressed up in vestments to sell so-called Christian books and magazines. Read Jesus’ words and let God into your heart. The rest is just unneeded distraction.

Make a conscious decision to be kind to a stranger today.

    Big City Nights..
I was gone for extended periods of time.. then would appear again out of the blue.. I was a loner.. I didn’t tell any of them what I did for a living.. only the ones who had been to my loft knew..

The weekend.. I only have the moment.. so let’s fall in love.. hurry.. before the phone rings again..

I wasn’t the only one.. a lot of people around here were chasing their dreams, their aspirations.. and we didn’t have that much time.. so we just kept falling in and out of love.. every weekend..

Big City girls.. from corporate queens to receptionists, roamed the Houston Uptown clubs..

I preferred the rock venues.. the music.. the big hair.. the way they dressed.. lionesses.. they were beautiful.. and on the hunt.. nobody liked being alone.. you had to fill that void in your heart.. at least superficially..

The nightclubs were great equalizers.. what you did during the weekday was secondary.. a whole different set of standards applied.. everybody was advertising their assets.. better show off your stripes.. you don’t have that much time.. can’t you just take me.. and love me the way that I am..

It wasn’t that hard for me.. I rarely gave chase.. besides.. I’m recuperating.. I’ve been working my ass off bouncing between atmospheres building big sht and blowing up big sht.. my mind and body were on the mend.. and I needed another drink..

Most of the time.. all I had to do was lean against the bar.. a billboard of lithe lean muscle.. I wasn’t easy prey though.. I was prime rib.. and a fck’n diver.. and rare..

“Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Cor. x. 31

The great marvel of the Incarnation slips into ordinary childhood’s life; the great marvel of the Transfiguration vanishes in the devil-possessed valley; the glory of the Resurrection descends into a breakfast on the sea-shore. This is not an anti-climax, but a great revelation of God.

The tendency is to look for the marvelous in our experience; we mistake the sense of the heroic for being heroes. It is one thing to go through a crisis grandly, but another thing to go through every day glorifying God when there is no witness, no limelight, no one paying the remotest attention to us. If we do not want medieval haloes, we want something that will make people say – What a wonderful man of prayer he is! What a pious devoted woman she is! If you are rightly devoted to the Lord Jesus, you have reached the sublime height where no one ever thinks of noticing you, all that is noticed is that the power of God comes through you all the time.

Oh, I have had a wonderful call from God! It takes Almighty God Incarnate in us to do the meanest duty to the glory of God. It takes God’s Spirit in us to make us so absolutely humanly His that we are utterly unnoticeable. The test of the life of a saint is not success, but faithfulness in human life as it actually is. We will set up success in Christian work as the aim; the aim is to manifest the glory of God in human life, to live the life hid with Christ in God in human conditions. Our human relationships are the actual conditions in which the ideal life of God is to be exhibited.

Situation in Virginia is pretty bad. I had intended to do an assessment of the ranks of GOP precinct captains in the state, and what I found instead was that even District Chairman positions are vacant. Given what a vital role those positions are I was stunned.

I found 11 DC positions in Virginia open – if you are in Virginia and want to make a difference, please look into one of the open District Chairman positions, or at least sign up to be a precinct captain.

Virginia GOP has its hands tied without having these “people on the ground” organizing positions filled up.

Election day in Louisiana, voters are going to the polls to pick a gov. Present Rat gov, John Dell Edwards (who couldn’t trust a Louisiana gov named Edwards, eh?) is going up against Republican Eddie Risponi.

Under Edwards the state lost jobs under Trump and actually stayed in down in the dregs amongst the states in several important metrics. Most notably is insurance, automobile insurance has skyrocketed as tort lawyers continue to wring $$$ from auto accidents and ‘slip and fall’ cases. Tort lawyers beat the 1st responders to the Hard Rock Hotel collapse, they had suits on file before the FD had their hoses hooked up. Bell is a lawyer and Risponi is a businessman.

It’s coming down top New Orleans as the pivot point in the election, can the city Rat pol movers/shakers deliver the black and illegal vote to sway the results? Early and mail-in votes were at almost historic highs, just about guaranteeing the wranglers are working their slimy magic. No word about if the busses will be out ferrying voters to the polls – yep, each special bus to a number of polls. Oh yes, there’ll be poll watchers there but you can bet the habit of selectively picking poll watchers for specific polling places hasn’t died.

The voters with the highest poverty, illiteracy – you name it – rates will be the swing. Those same folks who have special tort commercials emphasizing a tort suit as their personal jackpot will be the swing. Ain’t our system wonderful?

Let us draw near to the Most Holy Place.

The Old Testament previews how Jesus was to pay the price and make the final sacrifice. This preview is found in the ordinance of the Day of Atonement, described in detail in Leviticus 16. The high priest was to go just once each year into the Most Holy Place, the Holy of Holies. He had to take two things: a censer filled with incense, which made an aromatic cloud that covered him and the mercy seat, and the blood of the sacrifice, offered on his own behalf.
Going thusly into the Most Holy Place, he had to sprinkle the blood seven (7) times between the second veil, where he entered, and the front (or east) side of the mercy seat itself. So, there was an initial sprinkling of the blood seven times. I believe that this was an exact prophetic preview of how Jesus was to sprinkle His own blood on the way to the cross,, as well as on the cross itself. The number seven indicates the work of the Holy Spirit–it is the number of completeness, or perfection, indicating a perfect work. The prophetic sprinkling was exactly fulfilled in the way that Jesus shed His blood: He shed His blood precisely SEVEN TIMES before the sacrifice was complete.
In that sevenfold shedding, Jesus’ body was emptied of blood. He literally poured out His soul to death in these steps: (1) His sweat became blood (Luke 22:44, (2) they struck Him in the face with fists and rods (Luke 22:63-64, (3) they flogged Him with a Roman scourge (Luke 18:33), (4) His beard was pulled out (Isaiah 50:6), (5) thorns were pressed into His scalp (Matthew 27:29, (6) His hands and feet were pierced with nails (John 20:25), and (7) His side was pierced with a spear (John 19::34).
Thank you, Lord, that I can draw near to You by the blood of Jesus. I proclaim that by sprinkling His blood seven times, Jesus made the sacrifice complete. I shall ldraw near to the Most Holy Place.
