Wednesday August 14th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    Good Works

Millions of people are striving to make themselves acceptable to God by good works. Such people can never be sure of salvation, for the simple reason that they can never be sure whether they have done enough good works or whether they have done them in the right way. Some suppose that heaven can be won if our good works outweigh our evil works, but this does not make sense either, for good works are what all of us ought to do and even one evil deed would prevent a just and holy God from justifying us or admitting us into His presence.

Let’s not put the cart before the horse. God does expect good works from His children but not as payment for salvation, for eternal life and glory could not possibly be bought at any price. “Christ Jesus came into the world,” says the Apostle Paul, “to save sinners” (1 Tim. 1:15). Then, having saved them by grace, He expects them to do good works out of gratitude.

It is interesting to compare Tit. 3:5 with Tit. 3:8:
Tit. 3:5:”NOT BY WORKS of righteousness which we have done, but ACCORDING TO HIS MERCY HE SAVED US.”

Tit. 3:8:” …these things I will that thou affirm constantly, THAT THEY WHICH HAVE BELIEVED IN GOD MIGHT BE CAREFUL TO MAINTAIN GOOD WORKS. …”

Faith is the root; good works the fruit. Thus we read in Eph. 2:8-10:

“For by grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO GOOD WORKS, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

    By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

    https://www.bereanbiblesociety.org/good-works/

1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

    Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Titus 3:8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

I was doing a bit of research and ran across a Time article related to Trump’s February speech in February where he talked sort of approvingly about China having a death penalty for drug sellers

Time was finding ‘experts’ who not only quoted International Law banning death penalties but who also advocated policies that would help users such as needle exchanges, more widespread availability of naloxone and (my all time favorite) safe and supervised areas where addicts can shoot up. Not once did Time mention the horrible damages done both up and downstream from the user.

I guess my personal desire to just jail users and let them bounce off the walls detoxing isn’t PC, they’d have time to review their personal and voluntary choices that led them to being junkies (emphasis on the ‘junk’) and if they don’t survive the detox … well it was their choice in the beginning and each ‘hit’ after. Oh yeah, I’m still 110% for the death penalty for heroin dealers by firing squads manned by those their products damaged.

Coming up with excuses and largely useless treatment for heroin junkies is a growth industry. Hordes of Keane-eyed ‘experts’ tell us how blah-blah-blah led to poor Joe or Susan’s addiction and, even though they’ve been detoxed in expensive public-funded programs (that we need more of, they say), it’s society’s fault that they started and are still shooting up opiates. They aren’t to blame, we are.

I’m retired and will never have to deal with a junkie on business terms again. Nor will I have to deal with someone who’s been mugged, injured or burgled by a junkie desperate to feed that $300 or more a day habit. I feel for those 1st responders (and the civilian victims of those junkies) who will have to and there were and still are a lot of us in the business who agree with Trump in that capital punishment for those who sell opiates ain’t such a bad idea.

If the drugs weren’t available just think how many lives would be saved. The reality is that with all the public money spent on rehabilitation, it is about the same result as trying to eradicate insects. Considering the cost of a bullet, and weighing that against the loss and misery that comes drug use, it’s well with it.
Consider that Singapore dose not have a drug problem, as most of the Asian country’s. If you are found with drugs today….you will be hung on the following Saturday. There are no appeals, it dose not matter if you are a resident or a foreigner…..you’re going to hang…..hence no drug problem.
There is no ACLU, no slick talking lawyers or bribing the Judges. We often hear the politicians speak to the fact that we are a Country of Laws….unfortunately the system is so broken that the term is now meaningless.
Oh by the way, in China, the family of the Drug dealers or other criminals such murders, that are executed, the family will be charged for the price of the bullet.

What hypocrites we are, celebrating the beginning of the drug culture, without regard to the misery that drugs have brought to our Country. It is a shame that we are now, because of the liberals allowing drugs to be sold in State controlled stores, setting up facilities that drug users can get clean needles. It use to be that users were incarcerated, but the population has grown to a point the prisons are full, and the correction system is so corrupt that they allow drugs into the jails and prisons.

Ask local LEA about the instructions they get when doing security for movie/TV shoots regarding drugs on the set, in the hotels or wherever their Hollyork charges are. Some do not get instructions but those that do, and can be honest about it, will tell you that due to the celebrity of the trash, the $$$ they bring in and the smoke they blow up local/state politicians’ butts, they can smoke/snort/whatever with impunity. BTW, how do you think those celebs find good and ‘safe’ drugs in a city they’re unfamiliar with???????

Then there are those ‘festivals’ where drug use is expected to occur, those ones that bring in big name musicians and barrels of money – but that’s another story.

Hollywood drives a lot of the drug culture, celebs have drugs and alcohol in their lives like working slobs do junk food and lite beer. They get caught they are sentenced to expensive rehab spas where they’re regularly interviewed by the media and cheered on for being a shining example of rehabilitation. They relapse and their press service showers us with stories about the enormous pressure they’re under being examples of success the poor working trash can go all doe-eyed over.

    Through all tumult and trial
    With each step drawn near
    The oceans rage and calm
And the Word feeds the ear

    A horse draws a cart
To where a cart cannot know
All of man has a guide
    Even if they respond, no

    A cart’s wheel splinters
    A woman can spurn
    A heart conjures winter
    A cold shoulder will yearn

    But in the deepest place
    A space never shown
    In warmth a soul resides
    Despite denying its own

    The shepherd never leaves
    Accounting each flock hair
    The wayward wanderer strays
    The guide is always there

    What was new becomes old
    Just as old becomes new
    And around about it goes
And what is true is true

    To reinvent the wheel
    To reinvent the cart
    To reinvent words
    To cloak intent under heart

But the heart is not owned
    A creator’s eternal gift
The waters come and go, and come again
The free heart is to lift

    Afoot without an owner
    Or someone to owe
    A thing needs a purpose
    A garden to sow

As I walk out my door
    My neighbor on his lawn
    I see within a creator
    A guide never gone

When times are told to hate
    And furies rage like fire
    Remember the voice within
The one who held no ire

    A message for all
    A message for eternity
    A message for all messengers
    A message to me

    To Ponder

Let me ponder on God’s punishment of Israel (Judges 10):

    1. How the Israelites did that which is evil in the sight of the Lord, worshipping the Gods of Syria and Sidon and Moab, and others.

    2. How God gave them into slavery to the Philistines, who punished and oppressed them for eighteen years..

    3. How the Lord is fearsome towards those who apostasize from the true Faith.

‘Fall Armyworm’ Invades China; Wreaks Havoc On Agriculture Lands

China’s agriculture ministry warned in June that it found fall armyworms in 21 provinces, across 333,000 hectares of crops.

Fall armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda) are a destructive garden pest that can destroy a variety of crops as well as grasses.

Chinese officials are worried about prevention and control measures of the pest might be failing, which could lead to crop losses this year.

    CHASTENING

“Despise not the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou are rebuked of Him.” Heb. xii. 5

It is very easy to quench the Spirit; we do it by despising the chastening of the Lord, by fainting when we are rebuked by Him. If we have only a shallow experience of sanctification, we mistake the shadow for the reality, and when the Spirit of God begins to check, we say – oh, that must be the devil.

Never quench the Spirit, and do not despise Him when He says to you – “Don’t be blind on this point anymore; you are not where you thought you were. Up to the present I have not been able to reveal it to you, but I reveal it now.” When the Lord chastens you like that, let Him have His way. Let Him relate you rightly to God.

“Nor faint when thou are rebuked of Him.” We get into sulks with God and say – “Oh, well, I can’t help it; I did pray and things did not turn out right, and I am going to give it all up.” Think what would happen if we talked like this in any other domain of life!

Am I prepared to let God grip me by His power and do a work in me that is worthy of Himself? Sanctification is not my idea of what I want God to do for me; sanctification is God’s idea of what He wants to do for me, and He has to get me into the attitude of mind and spirit where at any cost I will let Him sanctify me wholly.

It’s true! We HAVE to know to be prepared, but my mind can’t grasp the level of evil and contempt against us! At some point, this will escalate until an invisible (spiritual) line has been crossed, and each and every article I read or listen to brings us to the brink and I wonder, is this it? Have we finally reached the end when God stands up and says: Enough is enough!!!

This 75-square foot Lego Marine Corps Air Station was constructed by Paul Thomas and shown at Bricks by the Bay, an annual exhibition for Lego aficionados and fans in Santa Clara, California. The massive set, which was uploaded to Beyond the Brick and reported on by The Aviationist’s David Cenciotti, was inspired by Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, and is probably the only good thing to have ever come out of one of the Corps’ most reviled duty stations.
