    • What difference does it make if the SOTU address is postponed. None! “From time to time” is completely ambiguous. Now he can focus on a legislative appropriated “Wall”, or a national security appropriated “Wall”, or just shut the border with Mexico.

It is one more American and traditional value, being disrupted, by the libs. I don’t care to see the all the fake graciousness or the Speaker of the House with her facial contortions…and yes, we can wait for the speech.

Its the trashing of the tradition, that burns me.

The difference, I think, is clear. Because the address would have highlighted, in specificity, just how bad the border problem is and the very specific consequences of the problem. It’s suitable information for a SOTU address and they simply do not want to acknowledge the problem at all.

It really is. While it was fun thinking of all the ways Trump could have put together a totally unique SOTU at a venue of his choosing, there was never any doubt that it would have been made to look like a joke… anything important or serious coming out of it would have been ignored and/or ridiculed. So what does he do instead? The one thing Pelosi, her minions, and the MSM never counted on… “Okay Nancy, you win.” I have NO doubt that Pelosi is indeed reacting like the Curse You Villain pic.

I agree. They would love nothing more than another optic that poses our President as different and inauthentic. They want him to appear as a bully and so ego driven that he would hold the speech anywhere in front of an adoring crowd.

I’m glad he is holding out for the real thing. He is the President. He should address the nation in the Capitol with Nancy chewing her cud in disdain behind him… all the while listening to what he has done for our country.

The Constitutionally-required report on the State of the Union was usually given in writing until President Wilson. From Wikipedia:

While not required to deliver a speech, every president since Woodrow Wilson, with the notable exception of Herbert Hoover,[8] has made at least one State of the Union report as a speech delivered before a joint session of Congress. Before that time, most presidents delivered the State of the Union as a written report. . .

George Washington delivered the first regular annual message before a joint session of Congress on January 8, 1790, in New York City, then the provisional U.S. capital. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson discontinued the practice of delivering the address in person, regarding it as too monarchical (similar to the Speech from the Throne). Instead, the address was written and then sent to Congress to be read by a clerk until 1913 when Woodrow Wilson re-established the practice despite some initial controversy, and an in-person address to Congress has been delivered nearly every year since. However, there have been exceptions to this rule, with some messages being given solely in writing, and others given both in writing and orally (either in a speech to Congress or through broadcast media).[9] The last President to give a written message without a spoken address was Jimmy Carter in 1981, days before his term ended after his defeat by Ronald Reagan.[9]

President Trump obviously could deliver the SotU in writing. But I’m sure he prefers the spectacle. /LEJ

because the constitution DOES give her that power. The Capitol belongs as it were to Congress – one side to the Senate, which RULES it, the other side to the House, which RULES it. He is deferring to the constitution, not to Nancy’s tantrum. She is overreaching in general, trying to stand on his national security square; he is ostentatiously not.

The Constitution is silent on whether the President can enter Congress or not. All it states is that both houses can make up whatever rules they want and that the President can convene them together and he has the say for them to leave. Also states the president must give a state of the union to Congress.

Mazziflol, I think it does look like capitulation in the very short term (next 48 hours). Over the coming weeks it will look like he’s the reasonable one and Nancy’s not when all he wants is a little wall money. Whenever the partial shutdown is over (whether it’s February or August) and he does the SOTU speech from the House Chamber, by definition, there will be relative harmony, he’ll look presidential and impeachment will be a ridiculous sideshow.

It shows he’s not an angry dictator or fascist or whatever negative they want to attach to the president. They claim he is a lot of things yet those making claims have zero evidence to support them. This continues to be the case over and over and over again. What executive orders he has enacted violate the law? None! Not a single one. He actually tried to end DACA but a judge (not acting within his jurisdiction) actually stepped in to ensure the executive branch continues the unconstitutional DACA program.

The president OBEYS and does not dictate.

This is probably the last thing they would have expected. And I seem to recall Trump did something similar some time ago as well. Too sleepy to remember the details but I remember thinking “did he just concede something?”

But this places the ball square into her court to play. She has now not only refused to negotiate resulting in this prolonged period of no pay for government workers, now she has delayed the SOTU address as well.

The President had his gotcha moment, forcing Pelosi to fly commercial when he grounded the military plane she had arranged for overseas travel.

But President Trump has good news to report about the state of our Union. Which will be bad news for the Democrats . Another venue without members of Congress present wouldn’t be satisfying to VSG, as he may want to personally see them squirm along with his his supporters. I think what Nancy really wants is to delay playing hostess to the SOTU in the House Chamber until after the Impeachment mechanics have begun, and taken over the news wires as the bleated headlines every ten minutes, ad nauseum.

Nancy wants to design and carry out what she sees as the ultimate public embarrassment for him, while she sits on the dais gloating, beside her hostage VP Pence. It ain’t over ’til the Donald sings: he’ll give an address AFTER there is a deal which includes wall-building and also giving the DACA’s a path to citizenship at which point many of them will become lifetime R voters – and their families. More importantly, it will be the beginning of the end of the immigration farce ongoing now for 30+ years, AND he will have shown the whole country that although he’s willing to fight, he didn’t play dirty and he was fighting for something worth while, not just to score points. It’s gonna be a heckuva speech when it finally happens, and make them all that much more petty when all they can do is hound is son and entourage and do everything they can to bring him down whilst doing nothing substantive for the country.

The DACAs will NOT vote R… Ever. Latinos (other than Cubans) do not vote R. They will take the concessions it as their due, and move on, continuing to commit felony after felony, never have been punished for the ones they willfully committed prior to the fraudulent Obama DACA, and subsequent to that. This shit stinks.

And, I suppose, no penalty for the lawbreaking parents? This is shit.

The President has offered no pathway to USC for DACA recipients. Also, the issue is that WELFARE RECIPIENTS do not vote Republican. 72% of DACA recipients come from welfare households. Those crossing the border in recent years immediately begin consuming public benefits. They’re virtually all lifetime democrats.

I’m disappointed. I’m not sure what the reasoning is but I think it may be that holding a separate, partisan, SOTU could end up dividing the country even further. Waiting and trying to use it as a unifying event could be more beneficial. Not a sure thing, but at least there’s a possibility.

I do not get much of this logic. To most of the ordinary voters who do not closely follow political discussions, Nancy just won; Trump just lost. And they feel it will go on and on.
There is nothing in any history of having to give a talk or even in the House; it is more tradition since President Wilson. Nancy does not have to respond, she can just sit tight and ignore any SOTU address until she gets her way. Sorry, I seem to be in the minority for this group, but to me this is not a good move unless he knows he has votes coming his way.
If it does not work as you all say, then we better look for a new candidate in 2020; I hope it does not come to that.

This is as simple as: does the President want to give his SOTU Address with Wall funding in hand, or without Wall funding in hand? Speaker Pelosi gave PDJT the opening to choose. He chose the former. If he holds his ground, a SOTU Address given “when the shutdown is over” is a SOTU Address with funding for The Wall in hand.
