Monday August 20th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    DAILY DEVOTIONAL, August 20, 2018

    Why Are We Here?

“We live to the Lord.” Romans 14:8

If God had willed it, each of us might have entered Heaven at the moment of conversion. It was not absolutely necessary for our preparation for immortality that we should linger here. It is possible for a man to be taken to Heaven and to be found fit to partake in the inheritance of the saints in light, even though he has only just believed in Jesus. It is true that our sanctification is a long and continued process, and we shall not be perfected until we lay aside our bodies and enter within the veil; but nevertheless, if the Lord had wanted to, He could have changed us from imperfection to perfection and have taken us to Heaven at once.

Why then are we here? Would God keep His children out of the Paradise of God (1) a single moment longer than was necessary? Why is the army of the living God still on the battlefield when one charge might give them the victory? Why are His children still wandering here and there through a maze when a single word from His lips would bring them into the center of their blessed hope in Heaven?

The answer is: they are here that they may “live to the Lord” and may bring others to know His sacrifice on the cross and His love. We remain on earth as sowers to scatter good seed, as plowmen to break up the fallow ground, as heralds publishing salvation that is in Christ alone. We who know Him are here as “the salt of the earth” (2) and “the light of the world” (3) to be a blessing to this world. We are here to glorify Christ in our daily life. We are here as workers for Him, and as workers together with Him. Let us therefore see that our life fulfills this purpose. Let us live zealous, useful, holy lives making Him known “unto praise of the glory of His grace” (4).

      Amen.
      Stay with me, Lord
Prayer of St. Pio of Pietrelcina after Holy Communion

Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have
You present so that I do not forget You.
You know how easily I abandon You.

Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak
      and I need Your strength,
that I may not fall so often.

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life,
and without You, I am without fervor.

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light,
and without You, I am in darkness.

Stay with me, Lord, to show me Your will.

Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice
      and follow You.

Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You
very much, and always be in Your company.

Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.

Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is,
I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of love.

      Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late and the day is coming to a close, and life passes;
death, judgment, eternity approaches. It is necessary to renew my strength,
so that I will not stop along the way and for that, I need You.
It is getting late and death approaches,
I fear the darkness, the temptations, the dryness, the cross, the sorrows.
O how I need You, my Jesus, in this night of exile!

Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all its dangers. I need You.

Let me recognize You as Your disciples did at the breaking of the bread,
so that the Eucharistic Communion be the Light which disperses the darkness,
the force which sustains me, the unique joy of my heart.

Stay with me, Lord, because at the hour of my death, I want to remain united to You,
if not by communion, at least by grace and love.

Stay with me, Jesus, I do not ask for divine consolation, because I do not merit it,
but the gift of Your Presence, oh yes, I ask this of You!

Stay with me, Lord, for it is You alone I look for, Your Love, Your Grace, Your Will, Your Heart,
Your Spirit, because I love You and ask no other reward but to love You more and more.

With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth
and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity. Amen.

For some reason (computer luddite here) even when I see my example link that I was trying to show you how I posted…….the full .jpg is underlined. Now….when I posted the pic for you originally the only underscore characters were after the fist grp. of numbers, and then again as one underscore then the last two numbers.

For some reason…….when you post that image UncleWP is receiving it as an entirely unlined link, instead of just 2 underscores in different places.

FL-Guy, I’ve seen you struggling with this yesterday and today.

The link you post looks correct and when I copy/paste it into a new browser tab the photo appears. So far, so good.

So I’ll conduct a further little experiment below to test whether it pastes correctly here in the comment box.

I’m, wondering what hardware you’re working from. I don’t have a smart phone but realize many others do, and from what little I know of them, I suspect many operations are touch-and-drag or swipe or whatever. So if that’s how you’re delivering the link into the comment box then perhaps that has something to do with it failing. I dunno, you’d know more than I. But that thought occurs to me.

I’m on a desktop computer with an old-fashioned mouse and in internet explorer browser. What I’m going to do is highlight your link text then do a simple copy-paste operation.

If you see a picture below instead of a text link then what I’m doing works as intended and what you’re doing doesn’t. Hopefully that’ll provide some clue.

Here it is, pasting immediately below:

I cannot see the difference between what I’m putting in and what you guys are putting in, yet you are getting the display from what looks like the exact same link. If you can solve the mystery, I’d appreciate it. I’m using Firefox under Ubuntu v14 Linux but I can’t imagine that would affect it. Thanks for the help.

                well, I wouldn’t think you’re hand-typing a link each time

it’d be more likely that you’re doing a copy/paste or drag-and-drop operation of some sort

if that’s so, then try my suggestion of delivering it to a plain text file or a browser tab address bar where you can see it

describe what it looks like. if it looks exactly like the text link in your first comment of this thread, then it’s inexplicable why it’s not self-displaying.

because I copy/pasted that exact text string from your first comment and it displays fine.

if you see other characters like hypertext brackets or whatever in the plain text file, that would be what’s keeping it from self-displaying – they might cause WordPress to not recognize it as an image link.

the reason for the text file is to get a look at it without any hypertext being “interpreted” by a receiving application like a browser, even.

you mentioned your browser and operating system, what’s your hardware?
                desktop? laptop? tablet? smartphone?

yeah, I’d really try to copy/paste from your original source into a plain text file that you open up fresh. that at least lets you see exactly what you’ve got without wordpress “interpreting” it who-knows-how

if it doesn’t look exactly like the link in your 1st comment, there’s your problem

if it looks exactly like that when you paste it into a text file, then there’s some other peculiarity happening, perhaps to do with your particular browser or operating system.

you could try repeating the operating with another browser if you have more than one.

All I know….which ain’t much….is when I posted, before I hit comment………that link was not underlined completely, however; it had an underscore 2 different times, after the first group of numbers and then after the o8.

Yet, from what I see from your 4:09am post above, it looks like the whole thing is underlined.

It’s underlined in both of FL_GUY’s comments, the only difference is it wraps to a 2nd line the 2nd time due to indentation.

When you highlight, copy, paste – and you look at it – it’ll appear as non-underlined text. Because your copy/paste operation is on text.

When you hit Post Comment, it goes to WordPress’s brain, where it interprets it to be html because of the https:// prefix and .jpg suffix and WordPress therefore converts it to an interpreted link, an active clickable link, indicated by the underlining and colored text.

That’s my interpretation. I just tried it. Highlight, copy, paste into new browser tab address bar and what I see is non-underlined text.

It’s been called the Lavender Mafia and has been around for decades. I first head the term in the mid-70’s, when I heard about it from a former seminarian who went on to become a police officer. It was not just localized to the United States. Here is an article that discusses it and notes that the individual involved was ordained a priest in 1971.

      http://eponymousflower.blogspot.com/search/label/Lavender%20Mafia

From both my study of history and my personal experiences with the Catholic Church as an individual who was raised Catholic and later as a police officer, I learned many unpleasant things about the Church as an institution. The acts of corruption, deceit and depravity by members of the “institution” still leaves me SMH. However, I’ve also witnessed outposts of piety, charity and true Christian behavior within the greater community of Catholics. I pray that this group can take control of the Church and reform it.

    The Christian’s Prospect

Those of us who trust in Christ for salvation have a glorious prospect. For the present, while waiting to go to be with Him, “we have redemption, through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Eph. 1:7). In infinite love God has made us to be “accepted in the Beloved” (Eph. 1:6) and has pronounced us “complete in Him” (Col. 2:10).

Our position is now a blessed and exalted one, for God has made us to “sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:6) and has “blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3).

But this is only the beginning, for, referring to the Christian’s death, Phil. 1:23 tells us that “to depart, and to be with Christ… is far better”; far better, not only than earth’s sorrows and troubles, but far better even than earth’s dearest treasures and joys.

But even this is not all, for the time will come when, the Church, “the Body of Christ,” having been completed, the Lord will come to receive all of its members, living and dead, to Himself. Referring to the resurrection of the deceased believer’s body, I Cor. 15 declares that “it is raised in incorruptibility” (Ver. 42), “it is raised in glory” (Ver. 43), “it is raised in power” (Ver. 43), “it is raised a spiritual body” (Ver. 44), for “as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly” (Ver. 49). And as to those believers who will be alive at His coming, he says: “We shall all be changed” (Ver. 51).

“For… we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change our vile body that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself” (Phil. 3:20,21).

plus…the bulldozers, the rusty creaky cranes picking up & then dumping tons of dirt, sand, gravel, men yelling, heavy equipment as far as the eye can see, all hefting & wheezing & beeping & pounding.

and that’s just to start clearing the “land” there.

Beaver can cause a tremendous amount of economic damage. They’re a very beneficial animal in a natural setting, but in developed areas, they’re definitely a pest. They disrupt manmade drainage patterns and create floods.

In my neck of the woods, they’re definitely not rare, so controlling them is crucial. Most folks simply practice the 3 S’s. Shoot…Shovel…Shutup.

      Water issues in Florida:

There are some groups, but they don’t seem organized. IMO consolidation is in order and political affiliation erased to be effective.

There are efforts out there, law firms that work on these issues and citizens that address these concerns. You might feel all alone but it looks like other Floridians are concerned too.

Florida home or business owners who have suffered water damage may be entitled to have their insurance company re-pipe their entire house.
      https://www.pipelawsuit.com/cast-iron-pipe-lawsuit/

This pipe lawsuit may seem like it isn’t part of the issue you’re experiencing but an aging infrastructure and a new subdivision can cause more problems in the community. Did they do a study? Results?

Is there a study to show how a new subdivision will tax the existing infrastructure? This law firm would know where the pipes are and if this applies. It’s not just the house plumbing that’s old….

This morning I am in Harrisonburg VA. We had a disastrous trip on I 81, but we made it. My husband has back issues and has a hard time sitting long periods, so the delays were painful for him. We did see lovely parts of VA on the back roads, just stunning, so it wasn’t all bad. The amazing thing is my phone kept telling me things about the road ahead. I don’t really use a smart phone, so I didn’t know even how to set a destination, but somehow stumbled through it. Don’t you know that phone told me all about the accidents and suggested alternates… It was much better than my garmin gps…
The issue I had with the smart phone was that I thought it was just too expensive… Way too expensive considering I make maybe 12 calls a month. But yesterday it really helped us out.
I switched last week, I dropped Verizon monthly plan and picked up one from Walmart. The amazing thing is, I still have the 4g Verizon network, and everything is exactly the same.
The other nice thing is the hotel has FOX on in the breakfast area, not CNN. 🙂

I Can tell you why MDs are bailing- LIBERALISM !!!

RACIAL PROFILING: First off if you are a white male you can forget about getting into med school on your qualifications. Perfect SAT? Sorry. Perfect MCATs? Sorry. Black female with marginal intellect? 3rd worlder who plans to stay in the USA and displace the Patriarchy? Welcome to Med School!

NO MONEY: MDs were once well paid. Even many Pediatricians (the lowest paid medical specialty) became millionaires in the 70s. General Surgeons made 400K/yr in 1976- that’s about 1.6mm/yr in today’s crappy dollars. Now Peds make an average of 68K/yr- less than your local Postmaster. General Surgery pays about 300k/yr. Would you go to grueling, all-consuming college until you’re 34 years old and spend $285,000 in tuition for that job? Really?

CORRUPT ECONOMICS. There is no direct financial relationship between the MD and the patient. A 3rd party- a Giverment licensed and approved 3rd party no less- stands between you and your doctor. “Your” insurance provider. Big Ins. and Big Gvt. have a cozy little thing going on- in most cases Federal Law mandates you carry insurance. Insurance companies pay lobbyists who write laws that help insurance companies. Swamppers make certain their control over you AND your doctor is also part of the law. See the problem there?

GOVERNMENT BILLING CODES Doctors fees are BOTH SET AND PAID by the Government and the insurance companies on a scale established by guess who? MEDICARE!!! It’s called The Billing Code. Yep, the Giverment sets the fee schedule and NOT the doctor. Do you see any problems with this? Here are a few:

The Billing Codes are established by 2 parties that do NOT want the MD making “too much” money- too much being defined by a bureaucrat- you know the type.

The Billing Codes are enforced by Federal Law. It is ILLEGAL and a FELONY to “up code” AND “down code”. Got a broken arm? The Code for that is xxx-xx-xxxx and pays let’s say $300 (I don’t feel like looking up that code this AM) Is the patient a missionary on furlough an you want to do him a favor by cutting your fee to $50? FELONY!!!! Prison, medial licence revocation etc etc.

OLIGARCHY: Insurance companies require the Doctor to be “Credentialed” meaning allowed to be reimbursed by them. Part of this lovely process is that the insurance company negotiates the percentage of the Billing Code that the doctor will actually receive. Most private practitioners receive 65% of the MEDICARE set fees. So in our example above the doctor gets $195 of the allowed $300- AND that gets paid as many as 3 months after the medical service (and costs thereof incurred by the MD) are provided!

No sympathy for the “rich doctor” you say? OK- here’s how YOU are ripped off by the cozy little arrangement between the Giverment and the insurance company: YOU are billed the full $300! See what they did there?

LAWYERS Add to this the corruption by the lawyers and courts- suing for fun and profit. And of course the required MEDMAL insurance scam (more gvt/ins ripoff scams there) and you get the mess we have today.

THE FIX is easy: Eliminate MEDICARE. Make insurance optional and not required. Let insurers compete nationally. Let doctors and patients establish their own financial arrangements privately. Make the looser in a court battle pay both side’s legal bills. In very little time the costs of medicine would drop like a rock, and the quality of your care would bloom.

(I hope this is worth sharing- most people don’t know how rotten this system really is)

    MONDAY

    2 Corinthians 12:7-10

We all go through distressing times in life. These seasons of suffering may be brought about by relational difficulties, financial hardships, or other trials. But as God’s children, we can take heart in knowing that our pain is not wasted.

Sometimes our pain is for the eternal benefit of others—God uses it to reveal the genuineness of our faith so that others might see it and be drawn to His Son (1 Peter 1:7). By the way we respond to adversity, our belief in Jesus becomes visible to those around us. Believers will be encouraged, and seekers will ask us questions about our faith.

At other times, God uses trials to teach us to obey—Hebrews 5:8 tells us that even our Savior learned obedience from the things He suffered. Another purpose of hardship is to broaden our ministry. The apostle Paul’s imprisonment let him minister among the guards, resulting in the salvation of many.

Difficulties can also be the Lord’s tool in preventing a problem from happening—such as the unidentified ailment that kept Paul from becoming prideful. When disobedience threatens our walk with God, He will take whatever steps are needed to draw us back to Him. He may allow a need to remain unmet or something cherished to be removed. His purpose is that we confess our sin and return to Him.

We may not know the reasons for our heartaches, but the wisest choice we can make is to trust the heavenly Father. After all, He who saved us through the sacrifice of His Son has promised to use our suffering to bring about good (Rom. 8:28).
