Wednesday May 16th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    How Long is Long?

“Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting” (I Timothy 1:16).

But if the word “longsuffering” means to suffer long with someone, how can Paul say that Christ showed forth “all longsuffering” to him? As Saul of Tarsus, he didn’t join the rebellion against God until Acts 7:58, less than a year before he was saved. God certainly hadn’t suffered with Paul for very long!

But in saving Saul, the Lord didn’t just show longsuffering to him alone, He showed it to all mankind. In the past, “the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah” (I Peter 3:20), but it only waited 120 years (Gen. 6:3). After God judged mankind with the flood, He started all over again with Noah, the father of all nations (Gen. 10:1-32). God endured those nations for 200 years, showing more longsuffering. But when they built a tower in rebellion against Him, He saved Abraham, and made his seed His favored nation, putting up with them for 1500 years. Even more longsuffering!

After God sent His only begotten Son to His favored nation and they crucified Him and stoned His prophet, you would think that God’s longsuffering would have been exhausted. You would think God would have given up on mankind and judged us with the worst judgment the world had ever seen, the Great Tribulation (Mt. 24:21). Instead He saved Saul of Tarsus, the leader of the world’s rebellion against God, to show forth all longsuffering. Paul’s salvation was the culmination of all the longsuffering God had shown in all human history. It was one small step of longsuffering for a man, one giant leap of longsuffering for mankind.

But God did not show forth this longsuffering merely as the culmination of all His longsuffering in the past. He also showed it forth “for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting” in the future, and the longsuffering the Lord showed Paul is the same longsuffering He has shown to mankind ever since.

“For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that…” (Titus 3:3,4).

After that, what? After that you’d think the wrath of God would fall on us, just as you would have thought it would have fallen on the world when they stoned Stephen. Instead we read, “after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared” (v. 4)—and it’s still appearing some 2,000 years later! Now that’s “all long-suffering!”

Have you believed on Him to life everlasting? The Lord Jesus died to pay for your sins and rose again (I Corinthians 15:3,4), and all He asks is that you believe He died to pay for your sins. Why not “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” right now “and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

      un-PC joke warning.

My dad had a running gag when we were growing up. He asked us kids, our friends a simple question: “How Long was a Chinaman?” and then he would walk away with all of us guessing numbers of height and length.

A week later he would ask it again and we would all throw out our different answers. All of them wrong. And we would all finally beg him for the correct answer and his reply was simply, “That’s his name, How Long.”

Four decades later my cousins still remember that quip. And we all learned that it’s okay to face our misconceptions, own up to our assumptions, make it fun to question and go back to the beginning, research what was actually said.

Your opening title brings a fond memory back, as well as a fond memory that Christ is very much alive and amongst us even now, the Love our Father, Creator has for us, his children, huge.

Appreciate your post this morning. Timely!

piper……The only thing inappropriate for this thread….is if you want to get into a back and forth discussion with others about any topic that there is already a dedicated thread for.

If y’all haven’t noticed…for the most part new threads are posted during the evening through the night “shift.” Unless of course there was some catastrophe happening in the middle of the day (Which believe me, happened a lot more when Obie was in)

Sd tends to attempt to post threads with their own topics. Now, sometimes he’ll create a new thread due to some link of news/info that gets posted here on the Daily Open thread.

continued……When this joint was a teeny-weenie little blog….we just had one or maybe two-three threads if we started looking into some issue and/or crime investigation. And we grew, and grew, until ……..Trump came down that escalator.

At that point the Daily Open thread was being over-run with politics, so now there is a special dedicated thread for Presidential Politics. But that doesn’t mean that I or others will ever stop posting news links and notes of what goin’ on here. (In a perfect research world, there would be treepers scouring the web all hours of the day and night finding tidbits with news and or updates in criminal cases, or whatever. Then Sd, could then just come to one place when he starts his day to see what he’s missed.)

Other than that…….it’s a place for fellowship, and friendship, and love, and chats between different treeps. It’s where I start my day with the Lord’s Prayer, and come back often throughout the day, for some spiritual grounding, and some laughter (hopefully)
and notes of things happening around the world that give me a break from Senate tee-vee!!! Which I will report on because like it or not EVERYONE needs to have a feel for what’s going on up there!

After a while, you come to “know” others and develop special relationships with others (that you’ve never met face to face! weird huh?!} I have a few other long-termers that I have now shared personal contact info with so we can always keep in touch.

There has been, all through the Obie’s years, an ever increasing development of orgs. with church denomination-sounding names (which she years ago identified, and I think we did here at the Tree) a group using the word “Baptist” in their name, that was not. (So of course, like my little jr.Sen. Opie, who was in the House at the time took up the cause, because it said “Baptist” in the name.)

Anyway……..a lot of those orgs have gone away slowly but surely since their lucrative funding has gone away.

Illegal pot farms in California go waaaaaay back, long before Brown. The cartels have been running them for a long time, especially in remote areas of state and Federal land, and every now and then a hapless hiker runs into one and makes the news. The illegal California crop’s also been a staple in keeping various state and Federal LEA, National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty military folks in a job.
Marijuana’s been a major, and frequently ‘the’ major, agricultural crop in California for years, lately beating the income from the next four crops under it – combined. But what the heck, it’s legal now so wee can just sit back and collect those taxes.

The marijuana farms, tended by 60’s hippies turned drug entrepreneurs … are and were NEVER an existential threat to hikers. However, Jerry’s illegal alien pot growers don’t share the same legal system as we do here in the USofA.. Sorry. NOT the same. At all. Walk across the WRONG plantation … and bang! you’re DEADT.

BTW … the promise of POT taxation was a joke. A ruse to sell it to a gullible public. Multiple State entities are now saying that TAXING pot will just raise the price and chase consumers into the illegal’s marketplace. So, the State is dramatically lowering the tax to virtually nothing. Ha ha !! SUCKERS !! I’ll bet you BELIEVED that dope was … medicinal … too … ahhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Wasn’t talking about the hippie farmers bei ng a threat, the more aggressive ‘commercial’ and ‘cartel’ growrrs are. We had our people working the busts, we had our people loaned out to all of the Federal agencies, including the HIDTAs, and the briefings on the boobytraps and possiblity of going nose-to-nose with on-site growers and guards were done, as were the films, by those who were on the ground.

Every vice that government decides to legalize and tax is couched in humanitarian BS. I watched Louisiana and Mississippi spread that BS with a snow shovel, how gambling money would all be earmarked and dedicated to education – here we are years later with both states scraping the bottom of the educational barrel and the money disappearing down a black hole. Same with Miss going wet, and Louisiand trying to once again drop the drinking age to 18 – like they ever raised and enforced it.

According to Chinese astrology this is the year of the dog, which means the year is governed by the sign of the DOG. It started February 16, 2018, and will end February 4, 2019…

However, not only is the year governed by the sign of the dog, but also our countries leadership. Incidentally, POTUS and FLOTUS are both born in the year of the DOG, 1946 and 1970 respectively.

I always liked the way Theodora Lau describes The Dog Personality in her book The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes:

He [she] has a deep sense of loyalty and a passion for justice and fair play. A dog native is usually animated and attractive and will exude sex appeal. Generally amiable and unpretentious, he will know how to get along with others as he is not too demanding. The egalitarian dog likes to meet other halfway, is always willing to listen to reason and can be counted on to do his share…”

I also always liked the poems she starts each chapter with. This is the one for the sign of THE DOG:
“The martial strains have summoned me

    Still your pain.
    I am the protector of Justice;

Although the statute’s language does not explicitly state such, but its vagueness has suddenly created great uncertainty for truckers and their businesses across the nation…..

Veritas Exposes Teacher’s Union Protecting Child Abusers

“Make no mistake, we are in a fight for our lives. This cultural war is about our ability to protect our families and secure liberty from the sorts of people who crave power and who believe they know how we should live better than we do ourselves.

The weapons employed by the Left to prosecute this war are the institutions of education, news and entertainment media, social engineering, alterations of the food and water supply, and finally — the gun of state-sanctioned enforcers. To fight against these weapons, we only have our own human vitality, our ability to organize, and the truth. The problem with these assets is their effectiveness is only good insofar as the influence of the weapons of the Left are kept at bay….”

The Romance of Capitalism: the Dramatic Story of American Free Enterprise by Donald Edwin Cooke, 1958, hardcover
out of print but available used on amazon for $9+ and up.

Several weeks ago, I came across this wonderful children’s book (4th-8th grade, depending) that explains the rise of capitalism and freedom in a continuous narrative and with fictitious historical fiction to illustrate the points (small stories set in the various time periods being discussed, conducting business in ways typical of the time). I am reading it now for my son and adding notes but really few places I disagree or think need enlarging. Half way finished and I am finding it very well done. There isn’t much that is really new to me but I have never read a book that tells the story in a cohesive way such as this book and in such simple terms.

It is not an anti capitalist book by any means but I do see shades of pro modified capitalism v. “pure” capitalism. Example: On page. 38, “…driven by either greed or by shrewdness, the merchant capitalists invested money in the building of factories for the conversion of raw materials into useful articles.” I have added notes for my son as follows: “What other things drive men to success? Why are people ambitious? Toward what goals do people work? How does their monetary success benefit them, their family, their church, their community, their state and country?” In other words, I want to stimulate his thoughts and create contemplation and discussion on the many reasons and motives for someone to continue strive for more financial success other than pure greed and love of money per se and why continued improvement and ambition is good for all of us as I do not want to leave my son with the impression that free enterprise and success are only good up to the point that one becomes wealthy and then one ought to stop, as if there is a sets point beyond which ambition and success are only motivated by greed.

A second example of my notes: p. 50, discussing Mr. Astor’s success and methods, the author says that “he had been a little more aggressive, a little more clever than others in the fur trade” in quoting Mr. Astor’s lawyer when he is explaining Mr. Astor’s success and excusing some of his methods. That lead me to write the following: “Does it make one’s method’s excusable or even reasonable if everyone else in the industry is using the same methods? Does one need to step it up a notch to find better/more ethical/moral methods that still allow one to successfully compete? At what point does one exit an industry?” I want to induce thinking about ethics, morals and standards even in competition and at what cost is one willing to pay to succeed.

I share a few of my notes just to say that it a book you may want to read first to add your two cents prior to your child reading it, just to make it more complete for them. I haven’t gotten to Andrew Jackson, banks or the Fed but I am sure I will add some notes there too! 🙂 And I am sure many of you could add much better notes than I am so not trying to teach you all with my notes!!! Anyway, the book is not perfect but it does have many great aspects, praises free enterprise and describes its growth and roots. Recommend for our children as schools are not teaching this our own economic system much less its history or its influence on our history.
