Tuesday July 11th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

There’s an article on Breitbart: 14 Blue States (and Iowa) Join Hawaii’s Challenge to Travel Ban…

Just when we thought this nonsense was over after the SCOTUS order allowing the travel ban to go into effect. Apparently no such luck, or good sense on the part of Hawaii and other states. It’s enough to get cold anger boiling hot …

Good morning, Treehouse … Please watch for a “Healthy Recipes” thread which Menagerie {thank you} will be setting up next Monday July 17th. I would also like to ask for everyone’s tolerance, because I intend to post this same reminder in each of the next 5 daily Open Threads, and maybe also in a few Presidential Threads (hoping to boost participation).

The idea for this was sparked in June by one Treeper’s medical event, a person whose entire family now plans to modify their food choices and cooking methods. My initial thought was to share FLAVORFUL main dish recipes which people have actually made themselves – not just ones which sound or look good – and to offer tips and shortcuts for easier food preparation.

But when I floated this idea, it was also well received by folks interested in sharing weight-loss recipes. So, because transitioning to either lower-fat or lower-carb cooking can often be frustrating or expensive, a “Healthy Recipes” thread could benefit not only current Treehouse readers, but also serve as a resource for future Treepers. The easiest way will be to type “recipes” in TCTH’s right-hand margin search field.

The mid-July timing of this thread syncs nicely with the bounty of summer vegetables available from home gardens and local farm markets. So, I think it would be very okay to also post side dish recipes made with summer vegetables as well as garden “surplus” tips.

Between now and next Monday, I plan to find and type up several good-for-you recipes my own family enjoys – holding them until July 17th to post, of course — and invite all Treepers with a little free time to do the same.

In all like likelihood, we lost 16 Marines (they don’t know if civilians were onboard) when their refueling tanker crashed into a soybean field in Mississippi yesterday (the 10th). They are still searching for bodies. God rest their souls. From the NY Post:

At least 16 dead after Marine plane crashes into field
    By Associated Press July 10, 2017 | 11:40pm | Updated

A Marine refueling tanker crashed into a soybean field in rural Mississippi on Monday, killing at least 16 people aboard.

Local EMA Director Frank Randle confirmed to the Clarion Ledger that 16 are dead in the crash.

“Most of them are gonna be Marines,” Sheriff Ricky Banks said.

It was not clear whether there were any civilians on the plane.

Officials were still searching for bodies after nightfall, more than five hours after the KC-130 spiraled into the ground.

“We’re still searching the area,” Banks said. “It’s hard to find bodies in the dark.”

Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Sarah Burns said in a statement that a Marine KC-130 “experienced a mishap” Monday evening but provided no details.

Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks told the Greenwood Commonwealth that debris from the plane was scattered in a radius of about 5 miles.

Firefighters tried to put out the fire at the main crash site but withdrew after an explosion forced them back.

The fire produced towering plumes of black smoke visible for miles across the flat region and continued to burn after dusk, more than four hours after the crash.

Aerial pictures taken by WLBT-TV showed the skeleton of the plane burning strongly.

Today’s EXPONENTIAL Technology Which Will Lead To The Image Of The Beast

duchess, thanks ESPECIALLY for posting this. With this article, the dear I.F. just triggered all kinds of fireworks in my heart and head.

Are we in danger of violating God’s second commandment against “graven images” if we make technology that we use to substitute for human relationship? Are we in even MORE danger if we build technology to substitute for relationship with our Lord God?

I have no sense that Christ our Lord has any issues with assistive technology but we are CREATED to live in community with each other and with our Creator. So long as our technology affirms and deepens those relationships – then, until I learn better, I say AMEN! Still, I don’t think He wants us so much leaning on our own understanding…

But more broadly, are we only exploring or are we trying to surpass the speed of light to avoid dealing with the earthly, political / social issues we face now and here? Are we edging closer to the abyss to avoid dealing with our own failure to know, love and serve God (and each other)? Do we want to be healed by medicine so we can spend less time in love with the Great Physician?

I think my own priorities have been askew for a long, LONG time.

We gave to the entertainment and media industries a status like unto a “god”. And now, we have those very industries damning us for worshiping the only Living God. Have we fed our vices to the point now that they will consume us unless we continue to feed them?

      [See: “Little Shop of Horrors”]

Bless you, duchess01 for dropping a pebble into my pool. I’m gonna be enjoying this set of puzzles for quite the while.

The sermon from this past week at church was on this topic (in a bit of a different way than you stated). This is one of a series on overcoming Giants in our lives, just as David played Goliath. This week the Giant was independence.

Additionally, the first five minutes actually included something I thought about posting here and failed to so thanks for giving me the entre to do so. Google did a study on words that are being increasingly used (self, I, me etc) and ones that are decreasing such as evil. And it really hit me when he said that. In article comments I often see people call an act evil only to be corrected by another commenter that the act is not evil (most recent I saw this in was of a woman who stabbed her husband and four children to death with a fifth wounded but surviving after 24 hours with the dead family members). The Bible tells us that in the End Times good will be called evil and evil good. Look at that Church of England transgender story again. Obviously I have no idea what God’s timeline is or what the End Times will be to us here on earth, but I know God’s word is infallible and I know what I am seeing. It is all around us.

        God help us.

If you listen tot he sermon he did bring up Trump as an example I didn’t care for but I understand why he used that example. He had what I call a preacher moment.

Most welcome, lucky! I think many of us have gone off the deep end at one time or another – but, God pulls us back in – however, idol worship has never been my thing – I admire what people can do and create, but God is doing the doing and creating through them – I cannot separate people from God –

However, I can separate technology from God – and that just might be the key – to keep things separate from God – creativity, ideas, and producing ‘help-aids’ – it all comes from God – but, certain things must be left ONLY to God – when people cross that line – that is it for me!

Just some thoughts, lucky – Thanks for yours – God Bless You!

Amen, luckyone…The Bible is packed with admonitions regarding idolatry, which can be broadly interpreted as anything that takes the place of God in one’s life.
People play lightly with the images of idolatry, and dismiss the theology of the topic…pretend they are not savages bowing down to graven images.
But when I see youngsters walking into traffic, their noses in their ‘phones, they have been sucked into exactly what you describe. It is, among other things, a sort of tactic of approach/avoidance, a tool which can isolate rather than enhancing
we all occasionally need to re-evaluate our relationship to our technology, to insure it does not become unto us an idol.

Break out the cow spots and cowbells.

On Tuesday, Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide are giving away free food from opening time until 7 p.m. for its 13th annual Cow Appreciation Day promotion.

But there’s a catch: You have to dress up like a cow.

“Adult customers who dress in any type of cow attire, whether it’s “’head-to-hoof’” or sporting a cow-spotted accessory, will be rewarded with a free Chick-fil-A entrée,” the company announced.

Children get a free kid’s meal for dressing up.

Chick-fil-A, best known for its chicken sandwiches, has a long featured cows in its advertising. The running joke is that the cows are plugging Chick-fil-A as a way of preserving their own lives because customers will eat more chicken and less beef.

Cow-clad customers have the choice of nearly every item on the Chick-fil-A menu except for salads.

For breakfast, options include the Egg White Grill and Chicken, Egg and Cheese Bagel, Chick-n-Minis, Greek Yogurt Parfait or any size fruit cup.

For lunch and dinner, choose from the seasonal Smokehouse BBQ Bacon Sandwich, Chicken Deluxe Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Cool Wrap, other sandwiches, nuggets, and drinks including small frosted coffee and small frosted lemonade.

Expect long lines and crowds of chicken lovers for the annual event.

like…it seemed so bizarre, so other-worldy…like sci-fi…trying to imagine how we could get to such a point and what it would be like ?

well….here we are….but now what is so astonishing is how spiritually-blinded the world still is, to it all.

smiley, they are so wrapped up in the science they have lost all ethical sense – they act like gods – just as some doctors do – they love the ‘control’!

Science was intriguing when we were exposed to the ‘perfection’ of the Creator – however, every concept is not created equal – the Internet was exciting until we discovered it could be used for nefarious activity –

The fight between good and evil is ongoing – it has been with us since time began – evil still disgusts us – and it should – but, we trust God is in charge – and that nothing happens without His approval –

I, too, had a hard time with this topic – and the person providing the information – so smug – so confident – so cold – however, this is the world where satan and his technology reign –

Ever wonder why we have to replace our technological gizmos frequently – well, I have – it is because satan cannot ‘create’ anything that lasts – whatever he creates, fails – I take comfort in that – hope and pray you can, too!

God Bless You, smiley, for your honesty and observations – 🙂

However, we are not of this world – there is a better one coming where none of this will matter – I hold onto that and God’s Word – keeps me going – even when the ugliness is too great at times –

I put my trust in God – not man – His Word explains it all – and instructs us in what to do – and how to deal with it – sometimes, easier said than done – but, we will prevail if we put our trust in Him!

Good evening, Treepers … My apologies for going off-topic, but I wanted to mention a “Healthy Recipes” thread which Menagerie {thank you} will be setting up next Monday July 17th. This is the first of several reminders I intend to post in the Open and Presidential Threads — hoping to boost participation — so please excuse the repeats.

The idea for this was sparked in June by one Treeper’s medical event (stroke), a person whose entire family now plans to modify their food choices and cooking methods (away from frying). My initial thought was to share FLAVORFUL main dish recipes which people have actually made themselves – not just ones which sound or look good – and to offer tips and shortcuts for easier food preparation. Main dish recipes can include meats or fish which are broiled, grilled, or lightly sauteed; high-protein meatless dishes (vegetarian favorites); and/or any lower-fat or lower-carb recipes suitable for weight loss.

But side dishes, appetizers, and light desserts can also play an important role in healthier eating when made with fresh vegetables and fruits. And, conveniently, the timing of this thread happens to sync nicely with the bounty of summer produce currently available from home gardens and local farm markets. So, I think recipes made with these would fit right in, as would any garden “surplus” tips readers could share.

Between now and next Monday, I plan to find and type up several good-for-you recipes my own family enjoys – holding them until July 17th to post, of course — and invite all Treepers with a little free time to do the same.

    Thank you!
