USS Fitzgerald Update – U.S. Navy Identifies Deceased Sailors…

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) – The remains of seven Sailors previously reported missing were located in flooded berthing compartments, after divers gained access to the spaces, June 18, that were damaged when the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) was involved in a collision with the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel ACX Crystal.

The deceased are:

♦Gunner’s Mate Seaman Dakota Kyle Rigsby, 19, Palmyra, Virginia
♦Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25, San Diego, California
♦Sonar Technician 3rd Class Ngoc T Truong Huynh, 25, Oakville, Connecticut
♦Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Noe Hernandez, 26, Weslaco, Texas
♦Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlosvictor Ganzon Sibayan, 23, Chula Vista, California
♦Personnel Specialist 1st Class Xavier Alec Martin, 24, Halethorpe, Maryland
♦Fire Controlman 1st Class Gary Leo Rehm Jr., 37, Elyria, Ohio

    First off congratulations on your many, many accomplishments so far as you strive to MAGA! No worries, despite the fake news horrible coverage We the People know what you are doing and you have our support 100% now …. tomorrow …. and for the next 7+ years!!
    The reason I am writing you tonight is the terrible incident involving the USS Fitzgerald and the loss of out 7 brave Seamen. Know that we are behind you all the way but in my humble opinion this is your greatest test yet. No matter what happened we will support you and our Navy but we all want just one thing ….PLEASE! …. THE TRUTH! We are so very tired of previous admins lying to us and covering up the truth to put out some spun up bs story! We voted you in on your many promises but the most important one is when you say ‘I will never lie to you’.

      I think this is a very smart thing. The dark forces always swoop in at times like these, and say “cover it up for the good of the (fill in the blank)”. Our military needs to know that not only does Trump trust them – they can trust Trump. The truth will do. Even if they have to say something like “the accident occurred due to errors in a classified operation, and we are not at liberty to discuss details of that operation”.

      Given that, as someone else here dug up, this container ship is actually owned by a Japanese company. As such, there is a new political dynamic involved here. We Americans value the honest truth. The Japanese are culturally hung up on hiding the truth when it’s bad like this. The Japanese government did a lot to try to hide the details of Fukushima and the result was far more dangerous as it prevented the US from helping and containing the problem… Another strength of the USA approach.

      If it turns out to have been terrorism related, it will bring a world of hate from many in Japan and other countries against the owners of that ship. Even it was gross negligence it will be very damaging to the owners as well.

      As Japan is a business ally, the president may choose to focus attention away from the owners of the ship regardless of the cause.

              ….A Merchant ship, laden with box cargo containers sets sail from the Philippines captained by jihadi pirates who sail the ship from Japan back home to the Philippines. However, on the way back to the Philippines the jihadi pirates pass by a United States Missile destroyer, sitting in a soup of fog. Hot Diggity, it’s Ramadan and the jihadis decide that 72 vegans sound really good so they decide to double back, back in the direction of the destroyer. The fog is thick, the Merchant ship slips into “stealth mode” evading visual, radar & electronic sensor array detection and rams the destroyer head on to broadside. Is that pretty much the gist of this attack?. Ramadan spring break on the high seas?

              I do not understand the immensity or sparseness of the damage that was done to the ship. I am assuming that a sideways glancing blow could not create the underwater damage to the destroyer and I am assuming that even on the high seas, boats to not run full throttle through a fog. Is there any information of the speed that either of the ships was running when the “collision” occurred?

              Why would a merchant ship run in stealth mode in the middle of the fog? Yes, yes, I know it sounds like an inane question, but even if she were a disguised spy ship, if you knew you were gonna attack a war ship, why would stealth mode really matter?

              Have any pictures of the damage done to the Merchant ship been released? Which part of the Merchant ship “collided” with the destroyer?.

                  Here is some information about that “stealth” issue based on something that happened to me 40 years ago. I had a Master’s license at the time:

                  I was returning to port late one night on a small open center console boat doing about 28 knots. The conditions were very similar to the night of the Fitz collision, clear skies and a 50% waning moon, meaning that with dark adapted eyes you could SEE a lot.

                  At the port’s entrance I spotted a bow wake about two miles away.The bow wake being bright white It was clear and very distinct but I could not see the rest of the vessel. I could tell that it was small and a fast mover. NO running lights on the vessel but still I was able to spot it’s bow wake from two miles away, and without binoculars.

                  I told my friend who was next to me, gave him a bearing and he was able to see it as well. Very quickly we concurred that we had the possibility of a collision with a vessel moving fast with no lights So I altered course to port by about 20 degrees (they were off our starboard bow). Combined approach speeds were 40-50 knots so this was happening quickly.

                  To my astonishment the vessel changed course to starboard and we were back on a collision course again. What the h??? went through my mind.

                  By this time We could see the hull of the vessel and we could also see that it had accelerated making more speed than we were. I told my friend “this is not good!” Very quickly the range shrank to less than half a mile.

                  At that point I went to full power (around 36 knots) and did a sharp 90 degree turn to port. The other vessel did exactly the same to starboard paralleling our course, We now were less than 300 yards away. Then they turned on all lights, three spotlights and the law enforcement lights. It was a Coast Guard 40-foot launch!! We immediately stopped. They came over with 4 kids on the bow with M4s pointed at us.

                  Story short they were laying in wait for smugglers (maybe had a tip) and our boat matched their radar parameters. After going through a 20-minute check they let us go without further incident.

                  Point is, in the case of the Fitz, with similar weather and Moonlight conditions, they could have seen that container ship a LONG way away, if they were looking.

            It doesn’t matter who was steering the slow bulk carrier and whether they were terrorists trying to ram Fitz.
            A USN Destroyer uses SOPs that assume such a possibility.
            This was caused by the Fitz bridge watch / radar operators not paying attention. Totally avoidable.

                As stated previously if you drove a bulk carrier in anger for a thousand continuous years you couldn’t ram a USN Destroyer. This is a 100% screw up on the bridge.

              LOL….”granularity?”……really?…..is that your position and you are sticking with it?…..modern cargo ships use GPS for navigation and tracking….civilian resolution is “muted” to about 3m where the military has a < 1m resolution….even were your theory correct that would mean the granular effect is 1.25% for the CIVILIAN GPS plot and < 0.4% for the military on a 250m ship…..hardly a fuzzy picture there

          Can’t argue with rf121 on this point–as to both vessels. It is hard to comprehend how, with multiple radars and GPS vessel traffic info, even if the container ship had no lights and no horns or bells (still required in fog), a USN destroyer wouldn’t know within at most a few yards where she was, miles before she got close. And the USN destroyer should’ve been able to evade her, even if the container ship were actually chasing the destroyer. Expecting to hear of power failures on the destroyer, though that only explains part of the story–e.g., if the destroyer was dead in the water, why/how was the container ship not contacted and warned to miss the destroyer?

          As to “stealthiness” of either vessel, a container ship, b/c it carries numerous “boxcar” or at least “18-wheeler” sized containers stacked above deck, has about as large a radar signature as anything on the sea. The USN destroyer, from the pics, doesn’t look like a particularly stealthy design, but even if she were almost invisible to radar, that wouldn’t matter unless she couldn’t maneuver and/or couldn’t communicate with the cargo ship’s bridge.

            Not saying the crew of the Fitzgerald did anything wrong.

            Checking out a “Suspicious Vessel” would be routine, for the most part.
            Getting close enough for actionable Intel, in a fog or at night, would be getting very close.

            If baiting the Fitzgerald, by giving them what they were looking for, the Crystal would expect them to come have a look.

            They were very close and it seems a glancing blow.

            What would not be routine, given the proximity of the vessels… would be being boarded!!!
            By some very likely bad guys.

            Definitely a CRAZY thought.

            The enemy is desperate.
            And desperate times call for desperate measures.

        I thought I would share a little of what I do know about the two types of vessels involved in this collision.

        I will start with the modern freighter. It is minimally crewed, and with only a few people on the bridge operating the ship at any one given time. The ship relies on two types of equipment for most of their navigation, as well as the crew. One is AIS a real time tracking system most modern ships use to let everybody know where they are. And second a computer operated radar that tracks, and plots all contacts it detects, and displays them in real time. The computer is also set with a rang of perimeters, it uses to let the crew know if a collision is imminent.

        Next we have a US Navy Destroyer, that has all that and a whole lot more. The main thing they have while steaming is a live plot of everything around them usually created by 2 people. They also have at least one lookout outside, but likely 2. Then there is the Combat Information Center in the heart of the ship, while not responsible for driving the ship, they are responsible for looking for anything and everything they can detect with their billion dollar set up. And when they discover anything that will come anywhere near the ship they let the guys making the plot on the bridge know about it.

        OK, so from this we can say for cretin that the freighter likely knew about the Destroyer, and the Destroyer definitely knew about the freighter. So any and all speculation of sneaking up on a Destroyer in stealth mode is BS.

        But here is where the rubber meets the road so to speak. With all the billions in hardware, and the dozens of highly skilled mariners, when two really big vessels get too close together none of that does any good at all. At that point it comes down to actions taken that are often irreversible.

        To make matters worse it is standard practice, as well as maritime law to make course corrections bold and distinguishable when in sight of other vessels. In other words if your gonna turn do it big so the other guy knows what your intent is. Reversing a hard turn is difficult at best and sometimes impossible if the space does not permit it.

    • I have new info, not engraved in stone yet, but… a friend with access, former Navy, looked at the courses, the pictures of and location of damage.

      The cargo ship had to have gone full reverse on one side, full fwd on the other, lots of rudder, and deliberately struck the US Navy Destroyer. And it hit them right where the fire control, radar, and other electronics is concentrated.

      The crew of the cargo ship was Filippino Muslim.

      This was deliberate, they hooked a sucker punch into the Destroyer.

      I understand what you’re trying to say, yet I completely disagree. Military service is noble. Period. Less than 1% of the population currently serves. Think about that! So many do not serve. So many families have zero connection to military service.

      These young sailors were on a minimum 6 month deployment and left behind every comfort of home and hearth and their precious loved ones to sail the seas confined to a ship for most of those 6 months. They worked tirelessly and hard for long days and nights and slept in small bunks lacking the comfort of our beds. They sacrificed family celebrations, holidays and all the treasures of every day life we take for granted.

      They did all of this for us, these patriots, war fighters, sailors serving America and every American 24/7/365. Each going about MAGA in their own way. Don’t for one moment think their deaths were anything less than noble.

        I believe I read the Fitz is part of the Ronald Reagan battle group….if that is a permanent slot they are stationed in Yokusuka, Japan and their assignment would be at least a 3 year berth depending on rating rotation times

I’m sleeping on the hope and prayer that they all end up in heaven. I chose the word “undoubtedly” specifically for those who might question these sailors’ eligibility. I am not qualified to judge them. But my gut tells me they died as heroes, serving a nation that applauds their service and supreme sacrifice. Thank you for your service gentlemen. We salute you.

          hero is used way too often nowadays…….a true HERO does something extraordinary in the face of adversity…..simply doing one’s job in the military even if it results in injury or death is not true heroism…..you used to have to be officially cited in performance of an act other than normal……over use of the word cheapens its glory to those who are TRULY heroes

    6 of the 7 sailors were serving well beyond their first 4 years of duty. They all reenlisted at some point. That means they all LOVED what they were doing. They loved their country and were grateful for what it has given them. The 19 year old sailor was never given that chance. My heart breaks for all of them and their families.

As many have posted here, I would wish to see them one day in heaven as they are already there, and I am working my way to get there. It has been a tough week for our country and for those families who have lost their dear ones, may God bless them all and give them courage to deal with unexpected and unfortunate reality.

    What was the underwater terrain like in the collision location?

    Japan is part of the Ring of Fire and I think there are a lot of underwater sea mounts in the area. If that is the case the safe passage may not have been the ‘entire ocean’

      It’s important to note that EVERY sailor is trained and informed of this possibility. We all know that if that moment comes, we may be faced with having to dog down a door or hatch on some of our shipmates. We may also be faced with the reality of being on the other side of that door or hatch.

      Those young men on that ship knew. In some ways it helps to know this in advance. It helps us to make sense of it all. Without that mental preparedness, whole ships can be lost with all aboard based on the choices of those mentally and/or emotionally unprepared.

      In services like the Army or Marines, the function is to use weapons to attack or to defend. In the Navy, more than any of the other services, it is mostly about survival.

    Our friend’s berth was right underneath the plane which exploded on this ship. The only reason he didn’t die was that he happened to be in the shower, in another area of the ship.

    “In July 1967, a fire broke out on board the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. An electrical anomaly had caused the discharge of a Zuni rocket on the flight deck, triggering a chain-reaction of explosions that killed 134 sailors and injured 161. At the time, Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War.       Actuallly the Forrestall had a few fires. That is why she was known as the Forestfire. The big fire was used as a good training aid as to what to do and not do during those situations. They ended up flooding compartments with excessive water to put out the fire. At sea, you are your own fire department.
      I only had one time where the announcement was “This is not a drill, general quarters, general quarters.” Your training takes over and you do what you were trained to do. Save yourself and your shipmates. Unfortunate to lose these shipmates. RIP.

        I was on Midway a couple of years after the Forrestal FIre.

        I remember hearing “Away the Flying Squad”.

    My goodness…our family in San Diego are is such pain to hear about this collision. Fortunately, our Lieutenant nephew on board this ship is safe. But the loss of the 7 sailors is just so sad. Sending the biggest ever prayers to the family who lost their dear sons in this absolute tragedy.

    A 24 year old First Class (E6). That kid must have been one heck of a sailor. Our nation has lost some of its finest men, and so has this ship and their shipmates. This has got to be hitting them hard too. Your shipmates are like family, especially on small ships.

    The egregious loss of life of 7 American sailors serving their country is very disturbing and now 7 families will suffer the agony of their inexplicable deaths. Sincere condolences to the mothers, fathers, spouses, children and siblings of the dead sailors.
    Seemingly preventable deaths like this call out loudly for questions like–How could a collision of 2 large ships “accidentally” occur in the open ocean? The families of the dead deserve the truth. What happened to the surface search radar or navigation radar or other detection systems?

    • The process of safely navigating a ship is manual and manpower-intensive. In the traffic pattern for entry into Tokyo Bay, it’s entirely possible for the bridge and Combat Information Center teams to get what’s know as “task-saturated,” which is a fancy way of saying that there’s more work to be done than can actually be done.

        100% disagree. The Port of Rotterdam, as an example, one of the busiest ports in the world, in very congested waters, gets over 30,000 vessels per year, which turns to 60,000 ship movements at minimum. Yet it’s safely accomplished every day by ~165 ships. A good ARPA radar and a very competent operator along with a skilled captain and good knowledge of the Rules of the Road can hangle most any situation, which in busy commercial shipping channels are a lot of encounters. When you add in all the additional sophisticated electronics used by the US Navy and the additional highly-trained people to man them, the US Navy shold not be making these types of mistakes.

        IMO it all boils down to someone(s) not doing their job and just as importantly, a catastrophic breakdown in communications amongst the conning team and a lack of leadership from whomever was the chief of the watch.

I don’t see how anyone could possibly say that our military is not diverse enough. Death does not distinguish between them.

    The next to last paragraph in the Daily Caller article a couple people have already posted states the freighter made a u-turn prior to the collision. Does anyone have a thought on this?

      It’s not true.

      The Japanese Coast Guard is now saying the collision occurred at ~0130, but the container ship delayed until ~0220 reporting it. The Coast Guard’s earlier statements about the time of the collision assumed that the container ship reported as soon as the collision happened.

      The container ship’s course reversal happened well after the collision.

    The theory of the accident happening at 0130 am does make a lot of sense, but there are some problems with it.

    It is said that the Crystal was running on autopilot, and that this was the reason for the time it took to make the U-turn, and also for the time it took to alert the Japenese coast guard.
    If this was true, it would mean that no one was on the bridge of the Crystal when it hit the Fitzgerald.

    Now, it is apparent the Crystal ran into the Fitz from a relatively straight angle, though not fullly 90 degrees. No doubt the bulb struck the Fitz below the waterline to flood the berths, of which nothing can be seen on the photos. We only see damage above the freeboard. This is also supported by the rip in the stem.

    It is said that it took about half an hour for the crew of the Crystal to get onto the bride and make a U-turn, in order to find out what they hit. So, the crew never saw the Fitz, not before, under or after the collision (before the U-turn)

    I don’t have detailed knowledge about ships autopilots, but I am pretty sure they won’t stop, apply reverse, move off and start going forward again, once they hit something.

    However, if the story is going to stick, this is what have must happened.

    Because, simply, if the Crystal did not back away from the Fitz right after the collision. Both ships would have had much much more damage in the form of “scratches” and the like along the sides of the ships, for ships this size just don’t bounce off of each other after a hit like this. Considering this, and the lack of this type of “post initial crash” damage. I am wondering if it could have been that the Fitz was actually not making way through the water, but actually lying still when she was hit. The Crystal backs off, goes around. Panic on the bridge, no doubt. It takes half an hour for the crew to get the minds set straight and decide to return to the scene, and realise they need to call the accident in to the coast guard.

    One other thing that doesn’t add up is that, in these waters reported to see very heavy shipping traffic, the Crystal is said to have been running on auto pilot. I really wonder if that can be true in such traffic dense waters.

    Big question is, why are the US still claiming it happened 0220 am. Lack of communication, would be my guess. But why didn’t the Fitz report the accident right away, and why is no one questioning why they didn’t.

    There are a lot of things that don’t add up. It will be interesting to keep following this as it unfolds.

    Similar reporting now in Daily Mail UK reporting, though be careful, some is “reporting” and some is conjecture or scenario-spinning by “experts” or “analysts”. But it does cite statements by the shipping company.
