You might want to research the Chinese DF-21, DF-21D and DF-ZF HGV and then rethink you easy answer.

Dropping massive bombs has not won one war for the US.

This incident is orchestrated stuff. It’s not aggression, unless you want to admit the US is aggressor, also. The drone was symbol. Chinese marked the symbol. Now they return the symbol. US takes back the symbol. Incident over. No need for a JDAM. No need to have a naval tragedy.

Don’t be rooting for a war with China. You will be rooting for losing 5000 men at a time.
Those missiles were designed to sink carriers. They’ve been further improved since their first 1000 miles test in 2006. And they are not even nukes. Just kinetic weapons.

That’s very true, but in that case the Japanese did not have the means to reply in kind. The best they could do was float paper balloons across the North Pacific, with incendiary bombs on them. Communist China does have the means to effectively retaliate, and who can know what will happen after one of those “massive bombs” goes off over Nanking, or Shanghai, Communist China’s biggest city? Here’s a wild card – no ICBM and its re-entry package has ever been fired over the magnetic North Pole, for obvious reasons. No one in the US government can say for certain what effect that magnetic pole will have on the guidance systems for those re-entry packages – outgoing or incoming. That’s more uncertainty to inject into this situation.

While I agree Hiroshima and Nagasaki were critical for ending the war with Japan (and Yes, I believe it was the right thing to do bc it saved many American lives), but don’t forget how many American men gave their lives island hopping in places like Tarawa. We should have dropped those bombs far earlier.

Aircraft carriers are ENORMOUSLY fragile ships. Loaded with explosives and flammable fuel, and materials. Chinese tactics will be to smother the carrier with 50 or 100 cruise missiles and some are BOUND to leak through. You don’t have to sink it to remove it from the equation of battle. Just render its electronics useless, or knock off one or two screws (or even just a blade from one of those screws), and it’s got to go home for repairs – and in that case, it’s just as good as sunk. In order to operate anywhere near Taiwan and the Formosa Strait, the carrier has to operate WELL to the east of Formosa, just about at the useful limit of the range of its aircraft. Don’t forget the Chinese Communists have been devoting a LOT of R&D to sub-launched anti-carrier missiles as well, so you can still sneak the anti-carrier missiles close to the ship even if it is 700 miles east of Taiwan. Best strategy to take in this case is use US sub-launched missiles against known Chinese Communist anti-carrier missile launch sites, then send in stealth bombers to take out more, plus C&C sites. The USN’s ASW people had better be at the top of their game against the Chinese Communist subs, the price to pay for missing even one is too great to contemplate. I’m not doomsaying – I’m just saying we need to treat the Chinese Communists with respect, not contempt.

Angus, note how they didn’t engage in violence. The drone, unprotected because it was embarked on an unarmed auxiliary vessel, was what we call ‘low-hanging fruit’. The Chinese are quite simply tweaking obama’s nose. An easy grab, designed to embarrass obama in his last month in office, and let him know they have ZERO respect for him.

        • SSI01 says:

And I concur 100% in that estimation. This is a parting gift from the Communist Chinese to Obama, just to let him know what esteem he is held in. They know how to deal with Obama, he is predictable. They DO NOT know how to deal with Trump, who has famously said he will not telegraph his diplomatic or military punches to his adversaries via press conference, detailed position papers, or any other such undertakings. Keeping your adversaries guessing is how you seize and hold the initiative. They have to react to you. It’s how you set the parameters for the action, and how you win every time. You hold the high ground and can make concessions that are of little value to you but make you look magnanimous. Trump is a master of this. He wants to play diplomatic and economic chess with these people, and Trump can maneuver them into ‘mate much more easily than they believe. They need us a hell of a lot more than we need them.

Absolutely. They’re not going to miss a chance like this to stick a thumb in Bammy’s eye by taking something of little or no value to themselves just before he rides off into the sunset (on his girly bike). One final display of Bammy’s ineffectual ‘leadership.’

Then when Trump scolded them “Knock it off!!”, they did. “Certainly, Mr. President, no wish to offend” 😉

Someone who might have been offended, and rightfully so, was “our good friend” Terry Branstad. Hardly what I’d call getting off on the right foot.

China not only needs us, it needs us to get rich again, to have a middle class that can buy higher value up the food chain Chinese products. They have begun shipping their factories to Vietnam, Myanmar, and Bangladesh to keep producing at cheap prices their cheap products. But back on the Mainland, they are entering the higher value product industries and need markets. So, they will have to do whatever helps the US grow millions of jobs so they will have customers. Quite an irony.

Or use commercially purchased water drones packed with C4 to go fishing for Carnival cruise ships. Or go to places where drone pizza (or book) deliveries become common, and start using aerial drones to deliver a few 4-pound orders of Semtex to ISIS infidels.

I’m sure Barry invited the head of the Chinese Navy over for a couple rounds of golf on the Big Island, and gave him a good talking to. Unidentified sources tell me he might have even drawn a red line on the 17th green. And who wouldn’t be intimidated by the man who personally led Seal Team Six into Osama Bin Laden’s compound?
