Thursday Open Thread – February 4th

Tomb of the Unknown ChristmasOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Grant’s Law’ could be headed for Senate vote

A new bill introduced would change the way illegal immigrants would be sentenced for committing crimes.

Grant Ronnebeck worked the night shift at a QuickTrip store in Mesa. On January 22, 2015 Apolinar Altamirano walked in, dumped a pile of change on the counter, and demanded cigarettes. As Ronnebeck counted the change, police say Altamirano pulled out a gun and killed the 21-year-old.

“If Mr. Altamirano had been sentenced properly and and was not able to plead down his charges Grant would still be alive,” said Rep. Steve Smith.

Altamirano pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced to 2-years probation and was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was released out on bond and was awaiting deportation hearings when he went to the QT store in Mesa.

Since the murder, Grant’s father has fought for laws that would have kept his son’s accused killer in prison.

“This needs to stop, I’ll do this all day long, every day of the week if I had to, we have got to stop the madness. These are preventable deaths,” said Steve Ronnebeck.

SB1377 would require a judge to sentence someone to no less than the sentencing guidelines recommended if a person’s immigration status is deemed an aggravating factor. That person would also not be granted an early release.

“It will send a clear message that Arizona is going to lead the fight against some of these criminals,” said Steve Ronnebeck.

Only 1 of 6 Senators in the Public Safety Committee voted against the bill, citing constitutional concerns, saying the bill singles out a specific group.

“When we start classifying certain laws to just do certain things to certain individuals, I cannot be for it,” said Lupe Contreras.

“People who are not citizens of this country are not afforded the same rights as our citizens, you can like that, or you can dislike that, I don’t care, that is the law,” said Smith.

SB1377 has been named “Grants Law” in memory of Ronnebeck.

it’s called affirmative action or possibly a hate crime.

Ha! I’m part mountain goat, or at least I was when I was a whole lot younger, and everything worked so much better then too, now that you mention it. Climb every mountain, ford every stream ….yeah riiiiight. Something about that location is the obvious lack of handicapped parking, huh 😀 Pass the suntan lotion, rub some on my back where I can’t reach please …..we shall endeavor somehow to endure the hardship of such unrelieved wants. I still have a few. 😀

        • Dixie says:

LOL! My quiet fear of heights kinda took the fun outta it. But the lady ahead of me in line to get in that rickety lift thingy stayed in a panic attack the whole time. I’ll put suntan lotion on your back but there ain’t no way I’d get in one of those pools teetering on the edge of oblivion.

I had one permanent crown finished yesterday, one started on the other side. Two old fillings were to be replaced, but thank goodness my dentist could find one more tooth that “needed” filling so he could round up my part to $700 from $630. It’s soooo much easier to balance my HSA account with round numbers! 😉

      • JohnP says:

I had 9 good teeth pulled because of gum pockets as prep for my hip replacement. The dentist used a general rather than a local anesthesia so I didn’t have to go back multiple times. The insurance company says the general wasn’t warranted so “Cha-Ching” another $600.00.

The dern thing is Blocked/tilted, or Broken, or a Combination of the 3. I feels like, (If you can imagine this), someone poking Me with fork, inside out.
I did find out what kind of Filter it is, learning that it was Only to be in place 4 to 6 weeks, then removed. Furthermore, it was recalled in 2010 through 2013, I had it place in Me in 2008…

Obama is at it again. The invasion continues unabated. He’s trying to let in as many illegals (new voters) as possible before the election. We are being replaced people. We need Donald Trump!!!!!!

Border agent: ‘We might as well abolish our immigration laws altogether

  19. redsequin4 says:

Question: Can the American people file a class action lawsuit against the government for not protecting and securing our borders? For exposing Americans to diseases from unvetted illegals? For allowing sanctuary cities to exist? For passing on the costs of health care and all the free stuff this country gives to foreign nationals who break our laws and undermine our wages? We certainly have standing.

    • smiley says:

I would think, even with “standing”, it would be well-nigh impossible due to sovereign and executive immunity.

      • redsequin4 says:

What we need is a good constitutional lawyer to figure out a way around this. The number one duty of the US Government is to protect it’s citizens and by allowing unvetted illegals into our country that may be carrying disease, exposes all Americans to harm. And that’s the tip of the iceberg as we all know. The President has sworn an oath to uphold our laws, which he not doing, by allowing a porous open border, sanctuary cities, etc. FAIR or Numbers USA might have some ideas but a class action lawsuit would send a powerful message to Washington that we’re sick and tired of their dirty tricks against their own people and we’re not going to put up with it anymore. Of course electing Donald Trump would certainly send the same message.

(sigh) i think we should go completely radical progressive on this and get rid of gender all together. no more mens room, no more womens room. instead, we have “naughty bits” and “no naughty bits” rooms. one room has a sign with a friendly cartoon drawing of naughty bits and the other room has a no naughty bits sign (red circle with a diagonal line). that way, people with naughty bits won’t get confused and people without naughty bits won’t get confused.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump as he seeks to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.

Has anyone heard of this new prescription drug called PrEP? It’s for people who are HIV-, to help them avoid acquiring HIV. It’s a once-daily pill. Am I alone in thinking this is absolutely crazy that a person who is HIV- would take a pill every single day rather than employ simpler options to avoid infection? Think of the profit to the drug companies. None of the articles I’ve found come right out and say it, but I’m quite sure the drug is meant for the hopelessly promiscuous idiots who insist on having unprotected sex with multiple high-risk individuals. You know this drug will eventually be covered by insurance, so we’ll all end up paying for it. So much for condoms, apparently they’re too bothersome. And so much for practicing safer sex, now with this pill people can be as risky and promiscuous as ever!
