Trying To Retain Relevance RNC Cancels Future NBC Debates…

Reince-PriebusWith the Carson and Trump campaigns organizing a meeting to discuss future GOP debate issues, the RNC is apoplectic about being cut out of the conversation.  After dropping the candidates into the media meat grinder RNC Chairman Reince Prebius now rails against the machine.  Transparent.

WASHINGTON DC – The Republican National Committee (RNC) has pulled out of a planned Feb. 26 debate with NBC News after widespread criticism of this week’s CNBC debate from both the party and campaigns.

But some say the RNC’s action may be too late to satisfy candidates who were upset with the questions asked by CNBC moderators on Wednesday night.

[…]  RNC chairman Michael Steele, who has clashed with Priebus in the past and is an MSNBC contributor, said the move to suspend the partnership with NBC would do nothing ameliorate the frustration candidates have with the debate process as a whole.

“This doesn’t solve the problem,” Steele told The Hill. “The original idea was for the RNC to have more control over the process, but now the candidates are already making their move and it’s too late.”

“I don’t think it’s a bold move,” he added. “They’re trying to appease the candidates who are already pissed off at the process they created. What they’ve got to do is look forward and determine the style of debate they want and who is going to be up there for it, rather than just reacting to what happened with CNBC, which was abhorrent.” (read more)

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see how the format or venue matters to Trump. No matter what, the GOPe and the media will be gunning for him. I’m sure he’s got something up his sleeve, but I don’t see where he’s going with this.

Trump is being the alpha male showing the ankle biters who is boss.
At this juncture, with so much support in a real political party he would be given due deference vs. the childish games the RNC is playing.
Trump got a shorter debate format, he has gotten the NBC ( read comcast ) networks
removed from “debates” more to come in changes. I expect the biggest win for Trump will be fewer candidates on the stage sooner than later despite the desires of RNC.

I do agree with you Sentient that Trump will be fine regardless, how refreshing is it to see a man with a spine 😉

Force the also-rans out of the debates, undermining the Jeb! roadmap/splitter agenda. Force the debates to actually have substantive issues, which will hurt Jeb, Rubio, et al, and let Donald start bludgeoning these guys with actual policy. It would be a very big win for the non-GOPe candidates.

The GOPe loses control of the debates, which as things get closer and closer to elections, are one of the biggest things voters pay attention to.

If they say one word he will open up on them. They are full of fear. He has none. They are trying to bifurcate the primary elections now. Trump….the winner….to be ignored. Then the RINO primary of Edsel’s to be covered.

Good ole Reince only “suspended” the “debates” he did not cancel any future “debates”. I’m not buying any of it. He is not shocked about the debacles they refer to as debates. He realizes he and his puppeteers have been exposed. He and the RNC knew exactly what they were doing. These “debates” we’re supposed to be the coronation of Jeb! The other candidates were supposed to take the kicking and slink away. And Jeb! would be declared “The only candidate who who can win in November.” Their henchmen in the “media” was supposed to take out any conservative who dared to raise their head above the chosen one. Donald trump entered and the vulgarians rebelled.

How long have conservatives been screaming bloody hell about the ‘debates” and Reince and the GOPe punditry of fake conservatives wrote us off as blinking idiots who are making a big deal out of nothing. The only good thing is that they made the drive bys so careless they inadvertently revealed themselves for bias pieces of excrement they truly are.

It was a farce engineered by the GOPe/donor/ruling/professional conservative/pundit class in an effort to get their candidate the nomination regardless of what the base thinks or wants. It blew up in their faces and now we are to believe they are surprised? Yeah I’ll wait for the beach front property in Mosul to go on sale..

The RNC should be hosting its own debates and inviting its own monitors…if any. Rush, Hannity, and Levin would do. NBC should only be sending a commentator and a cameraman, as should any other ‘media’ outfit.

Reince is very worried about his two highest polling candidates going over his head, deciding what they will put up with and what they won’t. Rancy doesn’t want these candidates. The RNC wants Bush. They can’t control Trump, and Carson knows this too. Without these 2 guys, the debates will not get the media coverage,or the backing of at least half of the republican people. The combined percentages tell ya that. The media needs Trump too for the revenue his presence gives. Lets face it…..the RNC has trouble with Trump showing the whole bunch, how the big boys play. What they’ve got to do is look forward and determine the style of debate they want and who is going to be up there for it, rather than just reacting to what happened with CNBC, which was abhorrent.”

Priebus never said a word when Trump was ambushed by Megyn Kelly, or when he was strong armed over the “Pledge”, but now Priebus’ panties are all in a wad because he realizes that he’s losing control over his candidates. I can’t wait to see what Priebus has cooked up to replace the (now cancelled) NBC debate. Something that will fall far short of what should be expected, I’m sure…

Priebus’s letter is an attempt to save his own hide. He created this farcical “debate” system, allowed anti-Republican activists to run it, again, and cannot be trusted to fix the situation.

My proposal: Debates involve sides arguing opposing positions on a substantive issue, in depth. With too many on stage it is not a debate, or even a discussion. Stop the farce of indulging vanity candidates; limit it to at most the top 5 candidates. Have 1 major issue to discuss per event, with precise wording announced in advance. (Pick from an abundance of topics: Federal Budget; National Debt; Economy and Jobs; Population & desirable levels of Immigration; Foreign Policy with Russia, China, Middle East/Syria/Iran/ISIS; Infrastructure; Health Care; etc.). Based on a random draw for order, let each candidate present his policy priorities for 15 minutes. Second round, each could critique the other candidates’ proposals for 10 minutes. Third round, 5 minutes summation and final statement. A series of such discussions would provide a fairly serious airing of issues and the ability to articulate viable policies, without allowing “media personalities” to hijack and trivialize the events.
If I can come up with that in 5 minutes, why has the head of the RNC failed to transcend shallow entertainment?

I would argue there’s an intended purpose or reason why the RNC (in cooperation with the GOPe) continually schedules debates on networks such as CNN, MSNBC, etc. with biased moderators – it serves as no other purpose than to bludgeon and discredit anti-establishment candidates. Reince was fine with it, that is until a couple of anti-establishment candidates (Trump, Cruz) had the testicular fortitude to speak up.

Donald Trump’s time as a reality TV star in negotiating with various networks has given the field of GOP Presidential candidates the critical mass of skills necessary to dump the RNC as an intermediary “Mr. 90%” as far as paid GOP media events are concerned.

IOW, each GOP Presidential candidate’s campaign can now get a share of the TV revenue immediately from the debates without it going through the RNC’s greedy hands for the winner in the General Election.

IMO, the Republican presidential political consultant class rotating through the RNC Good Old boy is in shock over this development.

Almost everyone in politics has that overdose of self-importance that can delude them into thinking they are viable candidates, but it’s too obvious to us outside that most of this crop are lacking.

Reince Priebus has always played the part of the dancing fool for the GOPe. This is a guy that in 2012 let Debbie Wasserman-Schultz run all over him when they were interviewed face to face. I hope the campaigns drop the format to a 2hr roundtable with the top 5 polling candidates and one moderator (preferably Mark Levin, Hannity, Rush & Savich on rolling basis) The JV debate would be (as long as needed) the remaining hang-ons with 2 moderators for 90 minutes. Commercial break at the half-way mark only! If the Networks don’t approve, then the RNC should buy the time on one major network and do 4 more debates after the next FOX debate: One in Dec, Jan, Feb, & Mar! That would bring total # to 8 debates. More than enough!

Going to a roundtable format is an improvement, but the real “debate” should include a hard look at whether it might be time to retire forever the entire concept of presidential “debates” The format is way past its use by date in my opinion. What else dating back to 1961 at the dawn of the television age is dutifully continued today? The entire concept is pointless at this late age, and amounts to nothing more than a manipulative tool of the left. (think Candy Crowley). Elimination of these debates is long overdue in my opinion.

I’m sorry, I just do not see the the strategy here, if there even is one. This was the NBC/Telemundo debate. According to the Politico article, this was the only RNC primary debate set to be co-hosted by a(n) Hispanic news organization…(Priebus) did not say whether another Spanish-language media organization will be involved. Priebus only mentioned the first question (Mr. Trump’s) in his letter to NBC. “Their guy” should have been the star at this debate. And surely the RNC would not offend the largest Hispanic news organization. What am I missing here? Keep the debate with the MundoFox now included? (And, Fox picks up Miss USA pageant last week.)

I sincerely hope that Trump, with the cooperation of the campaigns of Carson, Cruz, and perhaps others, push for elimination of ALL debates. Put this antiquated relic to rest. Think about how many “debates” the democrats are holding…. My guess is that they might cancel the remaining primary debates, and if Hillary is the candidate, they might want to have ZERO debates next fall, assuming of course that Trump is her opponent.

In my experience in state politics, it has always been the case that the challengers, not the leaders, are interested in debating. Those in the lead know that debates can only hurt. Besides, rallies and press conferences are much better for any candidate, in that there is an element of control totally absent from these corny, outdated “debates,” during which the mainstream press beats up regularly on the candidates it doesn’t like. How that is a good strategy is beyond me.
