SNL Parodies ISIS – People At NBC Actually Thought This Was A Good Idea….

The SNL “skit” is a takeoff on a mainstream commercial for Toyota Camry. Named “My Bold Dad” the Toyota commercial features a father driving his daughter to the airport so she can join the U.S. Army.

The NBC/SNL parody takes a knock at the military by showcasing an actress who “didn’t graduate High School” as a the NBC view of military enrollees. However, it then goes a step further with the ISIS Jihadist angle.

More concerning than the ridiculous SNL delivery is the thought that more than one person in NBC had to think this was actually a good idea, and approve it.

Sometimes humor can walk a precarious edge, and we are not even remotely the humor police.  In this case, however, the humor is lost – it’s just not funny.  Apparently NBC doesn’t actually recognize that ISIS is holding hostages, real people, including Americans’…. and brutally, currently, visibly, killing them.

Some girls choose the pole to work out their daddy issues when they are raped or abused badly. This shows how girls work out their anger for being raised by liberal progressive parents. As they strap on a bomb vest under their burkha after having been gang raped by achmed and friends…just before they push the red button, they yell out…do you love me now mommy…do you love me now daddy? You raised me to do this…are you happy NOW?

Well, I say we should be supportive of young dreams. Better they be there than still in Britain, with that attitude. With any luck, their voluntary relocation will become permanent. In the meantime, lock the gate and throw away the key. Let them follow their dreams, and do so as far away from us as possible..

Actually, this is what I thought the SNL skit was mocking – the stupid girls who “fall in love” with jihadis who troll for them on the internet, then leave their homes and families and go to Syria or Libya or wherever to unite with their romance novel “freedom fighter,” only to discover that they have really been conned into becoming concubines for the jihadi and his buddies. What was missing from the skit was the jihadi “boyfriend” turning the girl over to his buddies for their own pleasure, because that is really what happens to these girls.

Many probably still think “ISIS” is that TV show about the hot chick w/ the cuff bracelets. Or, they don’t care cuz their leader told ’em ISIL is no biggie……so smoke up, Johnny!.

I DO have a little hope in some of these cast members though. Kyle Mooney & Beck Bennett (from the weird Hamster/Goth Kid/ Inexplicably-French-Girl-Scout SPRINT commercials, and the “Businessman Talks to Groups of Little Kids” AT & T commercials, respectively) seem to have a properly sarcastic take on our current crop of “Social Justice Warriors”. My first time posting anything here, and hoping I do so correctly, cuz I really think THIS one is actually funny…….

I check it out every blue moon or so. SNL has not been even remotely funny for at least 20 years. It’s hay day is loooooooooooong past due.

On a bright note. We get Dennis Miller from 12-3 on conservative talk radio 660 AM here in Orlando. Great show, broad topics, classic Miller thrown in.

The Beirut bombing was done by Hezbollah. They’re Shiites. Muslim Brotherhood is Sunni. The Beirut bombing is noteworthy for being the only Shiite attack on Americans. I’m not saying that Shia pose no danger – Khomeini famously said that he would set Iran aflame to forward Islam – but so far, our main enemies have been Sunnis. And yet we oppose Alawite Assad and are “allied” with Sunnis like the Saudis who fund our enemies and Erdogan who helps ISIS. Our blind spot toward Sunni danger is why ISIS arose – out of our misguided attempt to topple Assad.

I’m afraid that “skit” is dangerous, actually, not merely a parody.

It downplays and minimizes the brutal and horrific reality of ISIS, treats it lightly and puts it on the same footing as the US military forces, maybe just a little crazier, but harmless. It dilutes and tries to erase the fear that ISIS instills and should instill. I could be overreacting, but I can’t let go of the feeling it’s softening younger people towards ISIS to think, Oh it’s not so bad, or not to be afraid.

It’s hard to describe how I feel about the skit, but suffice to say I think dangerous and deliberate about covers it.

SNL’s had a good run and, over the years, has come close to going down the drain – now it seems to be circling the plug hole again. Michaels seems to have had a problem putting together a rank of comedians and writers that were at lucky at keeping his hoary program alive and is reaching for cutting edge satire like we see on cable. Guess he feels that as a rich and famous Jew he can hide behind the folks he ridicules who protect his right to be an ass. After all, groups like ISIS would be too in awe of his status to ever toss him into a cage with a can of Sterno.

If we go back to teh 90s we see another dry patch where they just couldn’t quite get it together and almost went under. I can’t see why Michaels can’t find reliably funny writers and stage comedians who can meld into a group. His stuff’s starting to look like he wants to drag the raw stuff from satellite/cable onto primetime on-air. I don’t know if he’s gonna due it. Remember when Bochco tried to move full frontal nudity onto primetime on-air TV in the 90s? Still can”t quite Brillo and Octagon soap the image of Dennis Franz’s naked south=side from my mind. That didn’t make it as so many people want at least some scared and porno free areas to hide with the kids – I’m thinking Michaels may hit that scared wall too. SNL had some hugely funny people and skits without the nasty and biting satire – cheap shots are easy but cost in the long run.

(Guffaw!). Thanks for reminding me of that (not really)–I’m only grateful we didn’t have the big-screens back then, eeuuww!!

Maybe it’s WHERE he does his recruiting? Head writer, Colin Jost, is an Ivy Leaguer, and they also still nab MANY players from the uberly hip “Second City”. That’s a shame, as there is a terrific national improv troupe who doesn’t work “blue”, and who also is generally not as irritatingly “too cool for school”. They’re called Comedy Sportz–I highly recommend attending one of their “matches”, if you have a branch anywhere near you. Because the shows are referee-d in sports format, you rarely have to wince at sketches becoming uncomfortably long–they use WHISTLES (perhaps Lorne ought to try that).

I really wish SNL could understand that the Gutfeldian humor seen on FOX is now what is TRULY subversive. They’ve sort of become what they professed to despise. I know what!! Maybe they need YOU, Czar? 🙂 I’m a skeptic, but you still crack me up on a regular basis.

I’m wondering if Michaels’ slot as ‘Mr NBC Comedy’ is starting to corrode him. I’m bettinghe was instrumental in moving Tonight back to NYC, rebranding it from West Coast Cool to NYC Chic and losing a lot of us in the process. Michaels’ got his brand on Tonight,Late Night with Seth Myers, Mulaney, Maya Rudolph Show, Man Seeking Woman and has just come off a few other mainliners, most spinoffs of SNL. Maybe it’s my advancing age and all of those damn kids on my front lawn but SNL ain’t all that funny no mo’ and his other stuff’s looking a lot like the same old boiled chicken with a new sauce. Then again perhaps I just can’t understand the marketing demographic he’s selling to even though he’s slightly older than I am. They should have given the New Coke market rollout to him.

Yeah, wife and I paw through TV programs that have roll-on-the-floor humor and they are getting fewer and farther between. Blue humor can be funny but it’s not the only humor and some comedians can’t get past it – or along without it. We really liked Chevy Chase as Gerald Ford.

I don’t think we’re getting worse, we’re just changing a bit. I’m not wild about the younger generation but that’s how everyone feels when they get older.

SNL has had a few good runs but they usually get by with having only one good sketch or video per show. I’m not sure how that works for them but it does.

The PC crowd would NEVER have a commercial of a woman dropping her son off somewhere and crying (college, military) because that would anger the feminists by making women look “weak”. But they love having a dad cry (role-reversal).

Who here remembers when the original SNL cast and Candace Bergen formed up as carolers and sang “Let’s Kill Gary Gilmore for Christmas”? I remember it well and it was “comedy” or “wit” that hit a lot of nerves. Funny? Not particularly. An excellent sketch? Yeah. Anything that throws hypocrisy back into everyone’s faces, is good in my book. Didn’t see this ISIS skit, but will now have to take a look and see if it’s that kind of ironic knife-twisting with a smile.

my first reaction when i saw this on WGN news this morning was that they were making fun of the parents of Kayla Mueller, who was recently killed by ISIS, after being held hostage as a supposed trophy concubine for several years. I remember articles about how Kayla’s parents were libtards, and they said they didn’t want to make a big deal out of Kayla’s capture because it might hurt others or something, which sounded like they were sympathetic to the plight of ISIS. I was very shocked to see this skit. after all, this girl (and many others) was murdered by ISIS – how can they even try to make that funny?! But, then I read this thread, and I kind of agree they may have been just trying to make ISIS sound like jr varsity, to further Obama’s narrative that ‘we’re winning’. Not sure if it is intentionally meant to get other young people to join ISIS, but I would not put it past Lorne Michaels to do that.
