September (NEW YORK) Chokeholds are against NYPD policy and are at the center of the controversial death of a suspect on Staten Island, but Mayor de Blasio said Tuesday he’s opposed to making them a crime.

“I think we have to be a little careful in terms of the legal front,” he said. “There are some exceptional situations where the life of the officer could truly be in danger and that’s where there has to be some flexibility.”
At the same time, he warned that cops who use a chokehold in non-life-threatening situations will face “consequences.”
The mayor’s comments echoed those of Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, who told a City Council hearing Monday that chokeholds were barred by NYPD regulations and that he would not support making them illegal under criminal statutes.  (read more)
