This was America at the height of her powers; a Golden Age of Aviation when not two or three, but rather ten or twelve major companies were locked in mortal competition to push the engineering envelope. Virtually all of the existing aviation records for speed and altitude were set in the sixties, or in other words, at about the halfway point in aviation history. That’s depressing. To me, anyway.
