It’s only boats, not people, boats can be replaced…... SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A tsunami from a massive earthquake in Japan caused water levels to rise higher than normal around the Bay Area and Northern California.  The tide began rising shortly after 7:30 a.m. along beaches in Crescent City, where the tsunami was expected to hit the hardest in California. Officials predicted that waves could reach as high as 7 feet. Local officials activated tsunami warning sirens along the coast and have urged residents in low-lying areas to seek higher ground. Elsewhere, emergency officials closed some beaches and advised people to stay away from the shoreline.

In the Bay Area, some of the biggest damage is at Santa Cruz’s Harbor. Around 8:10 a.m., within seconds, the water dropped by about 9 feet as the harbor turned into a river as water was sucked out to sea. Several boats broke loose and part of a dock was also pulled away during one of several surges, each of which took about 10 minutes.

Harbor officials have advised the public to evacuate the area. “Do not come to the harbor to secure your vessel,” said a warning on the harbor’s website. “Harbor crews are working to secure the area.” (more)
