Follow the associations, look into their background, understand the impetus of why they attached themselves to the narrative advancement, bring forth the sunlight, and understand the depth of the opposition against George Zimmerman. This is NOT, in the larger sense, about George Zimmerman. He was the tool – to advance a cause.

As you may remember, on March 29th we were reviewing another “exclusive” ABC release of George Zimmerman at Sanford Police Dept. when we noticed something odd, the video was/is actually a recording of a monitor. Initially we thought that meant it was not an official release. We were wrong. ABC was given a digital Hi-def copy from the outset.
We now know that ABC was the first to posess a digital copy of the actual CCTV recording. But they chose instead to use a lesser quality, and far lower definition, video. (This is what they aired)
Here’s the story:
On March 28th ABC’s Candace Smith (seen left) was the first to gain posession of the video.
On 3/28 she asked SPD for the video, the police department was initially not going to release it since the area covered by the camera view was considered a secured area and not subject to release without a judge’s order.
However, an attorney working for the city, Lonnie Groot, who was tasked with reviewing all the requests for information, agreed to release it since it was actually on the city’s servers.
Ms. Smith was provided a direct hi-def copy DVD; But for some reason she was unable to get it to load through their equipment (or so the story is told). Sources indicate she was quite agitated, and so, trying to meet a deadline, she went angrily to City Hall. Once there she raised quite a stink about SPD, not giving her and ABC suitable material, nor actually fulfilling the request.
The city played her copy on their equipment and showed her it worked.
Apparently, she was pushing to make a deadline to go on air and asked if she could just video the material from the city’s monitor. The request was granted. The video was filmed with a small minicam similar to the one held in this picture (above).
So yes, even though ABC had actual physical custody of a direct copy in High Def, the first airing to hit the public airwaves on March 28th was video of a video. Again, Ms. Candace Smith was the first to gain access to this video. Subsequently, more media copies were made for all the requests that followed.
If you recall, all the commentary about that video were framed to a narrative ”showing no injuries, no blood etc,” this mantra was repeated several times throughout the initial showing and then picked up by other media outlets using the EXACT same footage.
Here is where the agenda shows, and it appears that ABC may have intentionallly played this video using a ridiculous low resolution on purpose so that no identifying injuries could be noticed. After all, this was the main point of their reporting on the “exclusive”.
If they, as journalists, had actually used the HD digital copy provided by SPD when you play it frame by frame and zoom in on GZ’s head, the injuries clearly come into view several times. While the bleeding had subsided, the gashes are visible.
They had this capacity from Day One when they were provided the footage. They could have gone back to the affiliate studio of ABC and played the HD video for their story assembling the “accurate” narrative. They did not. Why?
Later such an admission was made by ABC. Only they waited until April 2nd to actually use the HD copy footage they were in posession of. As reported:

The video was unveiled as an exclusive this morning on “Good Morning America.” ABC was the first news organization to show the original tape.
Reporter Matt Gutman said the clearer video shows “what appear to be a pair of gashes or welts on George Zimmerman’s head.”
Neighborhood Watch volunteer Zimmerman has said he shot 17-year-old Trayvon in self-defense. The video shows Zimmerman arriving at the Sanford Police Department within an hour after the shooting.
Gutman said the video had been “clarified” by Forensic Protection Inc. Former FBI Special Agent Brad Garrett told ABC that the clearer video shows “marks on the back of Mr. Zimmerman’s head.” (link)
Why did they (Candace Smith, Matt Gutman) witness, with their eyes, a High-Def version provided by police. Yet they reported on, and presented, a poor quality low resolution version?
Even if you accept Ms. Smith’s claim of inability to load on her equipment (see picture below), she still witnessed the digital copy in person.
And Why did ABC wait from 3/28 until 4/2 to correct their initial reporting when they held posession of the correct version the entire time?

If the request for a jury trial is granted. this could take years. Attorney fees alone could be in the millions for both sides. The demand for preservation of evidence in the NBC suit gives the other networks notice and the time to conveniently destroy or lose it.
Simply out of curiosity, I wonder what their target is in terms of amount of recovery and what George’s cut would be. I think SD or someone mentioned that Beasley gave the defense a half million up front but I would guess that O’Mara and West might get a cut above a predetermined amount.
That said, I am STILL wondering why the defense has not asked for indigent status for George UNLESS he and Shellie came into some unrevealed wealth but. if so, that makes no sense since they are stepping up requests for additional donations.

I did not say THIS actually took place, I was merely explaining how a civil law group, with potential gains from civil action, can, at times, fund a criminal endeavor that affects their civil action. I DID NOT say this had taken place, and I DID NOT specify that anying had actually been done in this regard around the Zimmerman case.

Watching the video again, it seems that there was obvious intent to cover Zimmerman’s head with the “ABC exclusive” logo. What I don’t understand, is that the logo movement corresponds with the movement of the camera. This leads me to ask a few questions: #1, if this was filmed from the Sanford HD version, why move the camera? It seems like there would be no need to do that. #2, how is the movement of the logo explained to cover Zimmerman’s head (wither intentionally or unintentionally) #3, for the movement of the logo to correspond to the camera movement, wouldn’t it mean that the logo is being superimposed by the camera?

I can imagine that a particular ideology and bias might shade your perceptions so you actually “mis-see” or mis-hear” things but this and other example go way beyond that. It seems that people KNOW what the TRUTH is yet set out on purpose to mus-represent and report it.

That would suggest that the claim of insufficient wounds originated with Smith and/or Gutman and corporate then ran with *their* storyline on the basis of what they said without checking (viewing the HD). So, did Smith view this at SPD before getting the DVD copy from SPD, and, who brought up the insufficient wound angle? I seriously doubt Smith would have come up with it on her own…Possible; not probable. Maybe that’s why she was so P.O.ed when returning to SPD–that she knew the exact story she wanted to send to corporate but she couldn’t get this to corporate using her incompatible video equipment.
I don’t know the process of “checks and balances” but the video was used on ABC with Dianne Sawyer on the night of 3/28/12. National Broadcast – For whatever that’s worth.
From her twitter account Candace is part of the ABC Network not an affiliate from Sanford. She works out of NY from her twitter posting etc. She was sent down to Sanford it appears to work with Guttman. She was with Guttman at the first DD1 interview. Also I doubt a National reporter like Guttman would have had a local affiliate reporter tag along for the scoop, not the way they work. They don’t like to share.

Sometimes the truth hurts, yes, but lies such as those in this case, hurts even worse. I commend you on that article and also how well you handled the criticism you received on it. During the Omara West interview for In Session Omara’s remark on not taking a plea really bothered me. He should have given a direct look her in the eye and a quick response of no. Instead he looked towards West before answering yes. I also feel if he had handled things differently about the pay pal account and passport, maybe Shellie wouldn’t have been arrested. He needs to step up to the plate and fight hard for his client. If they have to depose every witness on the prosecution list to get everything, then they need to roll up their sleeves and get to it already. As Gladnick reported two days ago, Professor William Jacobson of the Legal Insurrection blog did the legwork that reporters like Smith are supposed to do. Get this — he e-mailed the Sanford Police Department and simply asked them if there were indeed neo-Nazis patrolling the streets of Sanford. “No confirmed reports” was the reply. Jacobson then — get this — followed up by asking the police if they just weren’t yet aware of any patrols: There was “no indication” of any such patrols, the Sanford police responded.

When you file FIOA requests, or demand FIOA information, you, along with everyone else who has requested, become part of the public record. There were dozens of people requesting video DVD footage from CCTV at SPD.

I understand the process involved here, and though it doesn’t really effect the criminal case, it does the civil. Here are some thoughts about this event.

Reporters don’t usually get huffy like that when dealing with those they must deal with on a regular basis, especially the communications personal, and those responsible for taking the requests for evidence copies. If she did come in with an attitude, I wonder why, as someone new, you would want to build relationships with them.
She came armed with a camera, and the excuse her copy did not work. She already had the plan it seems to want to tape off the screen, even if they burned a new copy, or really asked her what format she needed and supply that.
What was the file on the DVD. We know Lonnie Groot said it was on the servers, so the HD camera in the garage feeds to a system. The output file of the camera is most likely recorded in the digital format as the ouput of the camera. It might transcode to another format to compress before it goes to the servers, Either way it will be almost always stored in a format tha is compatible with all current digital editing systems that would be in a newsroom even in a Sanford TV station. Avid or Final Cut Pro (both) even Premier and Vegas should open these common files, heck the camera she used records to one of them. It doesn’t make sense for her to be unable to open that file with today’s equipment and the codecs in use, even the security camera in the garage used.
THERE is on way she may have had trouble. New and only used to what is the NORM she didn’t understand that the HD DVD was a HD DVD, like a blu-ray. Now that could have caused her problems because she didn’t know what the real issue was, and that was she needed to open it in a blu ray DVD player and capture the video as it played. Or used a program that would rip it from the blu ray and then turn that file into an “editable” file.
I doubt that it was a blu ray, for one the disks cost about ten bucks a piece or so. It is easier to just copy a file onto a regular DVD in an HD file format. The simplest method and its how it should be done for news organizations. They played it and it worked, so it was not corrupted. What was it, a file, or a “movie”.
That she was able to talk them into letting her tape it off the screen is also unusual, this took the okay of someone in a high capacity. It is obvious they were under pressure then and did it to keep ABC from pointing fingers at them. Black reporter is given defective DVD evidence in the Trayvon Martin case, could thing she brought that camera huh.
The camera is HD, what did they play back with, A computer monitor, or a HD TV/monitor. It moves around because she is hand holding it. Those things are not built to be handheld. Take a 5 pound or ten pound weight and put it in your hands and hold them away from your body or up to your eye. It does not rest on your shoulder, remember. It gets heavy and for someone like her, its not her job to be a camera op. She is a reporter and maybe sometimes a “one man band”.
That copy is like a bootleg of someone in a theatre taping a movie with the same camera, not as good, but not bad either. Harm done by doing all this and not using the original file doesn’t seem bad. However lets go to the next step. The file in the camera.
The camera she used has the HD video in a file format to be output. THOUGH you can on many of them also choose to ouput STANDARD DEFINTION (what you used to get on TV and still do on Standard DVD’s played on your home set.
By outputting it as Standard NTSC out of the camera, (whoop[s a mistakey) the resolution would be poor, and if you did it by actually playing the file out as NTSC and use the “video out composite” from the camera, well it could look even worse.
Now if you have a HD file then you have to set up things in the editing process to render that footage DOWN, and deliberate act.
You have cover by using the camera and outputting the file to your editor is a mistake that is make. Menu’s on those things are nightmare, whoopsie.
If I were Beasley I might want to get that file/and or an identical from the city. FInd out what type of editing systems they used and if that file was compatible. The model and make of the camera and how it recorded the video (file system) and the options the camera offered for ouput. Digital and (composite if available). How much Time passed after she was given the DVD and when she returned. Note she raised a stink about the quality of the material they gave her and ABC aired a low resolution version that is also Stinky, hmmmm. sorta sorta ain’t it.
Because it seems to me a devious mind with an agenda could have opened that file and played it. Saw from that footage the injuries would show.
Someone savvy might have been there to know how to degrade the image in a back door manner. Forensics something “clarified” it. Yes Matt after you reset the menu back to the correct HD ouput file, instead a menu was wrong you found from a “forensic” investigation of the camera controls hmmm. Sure a simple plan, errr mistake you made with the camera file.
OH also you might want to ask the production staff why those images were played/broadcast with out a disclaimer about it and how it was recording and the image quality. How did that “mistake” get past the producer, editor, and etc. Ask for the original footage to see how it was recorded. See what it looks like when you Mistakenly ouput it as NTSC or even better Composit video out, and be sure and use a real cheap cable.

Apparently, she was pushing to make a deadline to go on air and asked if she could just video the material from the city’s monitor. The request was granted. The video was filmed with a small minicam similar to the one held in this picture (above).
So yes, even though ABC had actual physical custody of a direct copy in High Def, the first airing to hit the public airwaves on March 28th was video of a video. Again, Ms. Candace Smith was the first to gain access to this video. Subsequently, more media copies were made for all the requests that followed.
If you recall, all the commentary about that video were framed to a narrative ”showing no injuries, no blood etc,” this mantra was repeated several times throughout the initial showing and then picked up by other media outlets using the EXACT same footage.
Here is where the agenda shows, and it appears that ABC may have intentionallly played this video using a ridiculous low resolution on purpose so that no identifying injuries could be noticed. After all, this was the main point of their reporting on the “exclusive”.

Smith got an HD copy of the video. She watched it (in private) and realized you could clearly see George’s wounds. SHE DID NOT LIKE THAT. So she needed to find an excuse to degrade the images. So she goes back and complains that the DVD doesn’t work. They play it for her and say, look, it works just fine. She says, OK, but I don’t have time to mess with it, so I’ll just take a video of your monitor with my trusty camera here. After she tapes it, she goes back to her la-bor-a-tory and makes a new low-resolution DVD copy from what she has just filmed. And that’s what she gives to the higher-ups.

Or…a producer saw the good copy and told her they would not use it because it was exculpatory. She wanted to get on the air and remade an acceptable video. The template. Hmmmm. There may be email. But getting it is another story. It is out there though.
Jello that is nice cliff notes version. Howie has it correct also, but there is a caveat there. She traveled to Sanford from NY I believe (see her twitte account, she is based in NY). The lead on this case is Guttman. He would have been around to make comments and suggestions, and let the rookie do the dirty work. Her being huffy and carrying the camera with her shows pre thinking about how to get a copy off of the SPD screen.
Again taking a video off of the screen of an HD picture with a HD camera is not going to produce that type of degraded image. It will be only slight less degraded, to the general public I doubt they could see a difference. The type of degradation I see is done post facto. One using the camera which could be said it was a “forensic error” , the other done in the editing system and just take the HD image and render it to a NTSC SD 480i etc.
ONE other thing. ON a digital LCD LED tv set made for HD, which is most peoples homes these days. A Standard Definition signal does not reproduce very well, not as good as it does on an old CRT used before LCD. So a degraded signal to 480i then broadcast is going to look pretty crappy when viewed over the air or on cable/sat. OVer the air local HD is a much better HD picture than that seen on cable and Satellite systems. They will look worse than the over the air because of the compression they use. The cable and Sat systems use more compression than the over the air broadcasts when they output the signal. Though I doubt candace knows this as would others with no engineering background of the processes used to do the telecast.

An HD recording of an image that is HD is still going to look much much much better than what was presented.
Coming with the camera, an attitude, with the already it seems goal of using the camera for off of the screen. Now that is pre thinking an issue for some reason. Seriously, you would want another file, I doubt it was a blu ray movie file, it would still play back as a movie.

Its not focus, its poor resolution, to degrade an image like that from HD is either a mistake at best and intentional at the worst. If you get the original files and footage it is traceable for the most part. Its all stored in a database, its digital.
If someone could find out what type of cameras the station uses that Candice arrived with, that would be helpful. Be a snap to check the specs etc to see what its features were. And those cameras now can be had for 5k and up. The newsroom cameras will almost always be of the same type for the most part. Panasonic or Sony most likely, just depends on the model. They will also have some of the should mounts too, Though I see almost all locals are down to the these Handy cam things. which suck, etc they do make very good pictures, outside that they suck, from a pro point of view.
The Sony she sported for a pic costs more than a low end car. I can’t imagine that was just a photo op.

This is an example. SHe has someting similar maybe a little more or less. Note it does have composite out for NTSC SD output. It uses as does most SOny HD camcorders AVC file storage to put it simply. AVC for editing is sometimes a real pain in the ass because of its quirks in playing back frames in the correct order.
IF they send her out as a field producer/editor. She will have equipment to input her camera as well as equipment to put other file formats and even turn composite video into digital from playing it back out of a camera. She would need it for people that might have old video tapes like VHS they might have or other tape formats she would need to turn into digital.for editing.
What is in my minds eye she could have easily have the gear to do things so to speak.

Able to use lots of fancy little things,…very good field production equipment for editing on the fly, Im thinking avid .Her twitter page seems to indicate she is based,.. in the big apple, (can’t give it up on 5th avenue). Means she should be well outfitted, not like a local affiliate. All kinds of toys to learn and use. IF what is in my minds eye is correct, hard to make that type of mistake of using the wrong codec.

Editing can now be done on a very powerful notebook windows and PC in HD more tedious than a tower and having to work in smaller screens and compressed codecs to do it, and then render to the real deal for final output.
Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas, FCP 10 on a notebook. As you can see its the editing and post production gear where they bite you now. You can drop a ton of dough on editing gear. For the home user to go to you tube, you can find good choices. You can edit with compressed codecs and then render to you tube hd no problem now. Staying full flavor all the way HD in full frame playback, that starts to get real expensive quick. Think raids and expensive video cards

The degradation of digital images of GZ taken the night of the shooting seems to be a pattern. The SPD photo taken at the scene showing lacerations, broken swollen nose, bruising and swelling was degraded to a black and white photocopy. This seems to be the same thing in that it was a HD video which was degraded and the result was a story that GZ had no injuries from an assault by TM, ergo an assault never happened which was the intent of the black and white photo also.
Also Ms Smith labels herself a “Digital News Associate for ABC News” on her twitter account. Odd that a digital news associate does not know how to use digital format and has to demand that she be allowed to make a degraded knockoff to meet a “deadline” to show GZ wasn’t injured on the night of the shooting.

Because ABC is commonly accepted as a credible news source, even when it’s not credible, other media use its info. And so, sites like Global Grind stated as fact the following:
Zimmerman, who had called 911, was asked by the dispatcher if he was following the teen. When Zimmerman replied that he was, the dispatcher said, “We don’t need you to do that.” But Zimmerman pursued Trayvon anyway, leading to a confrontation which turned into the shooting shortly after.

A comment here about the other networks using the same footage as that provided by Candace. If this is so THAT IS NOT USUAL. If she was working for AP TV then it would be normal for shared footage. That the others got permission to use her footage, when a real copy was available from SPD is a flag in my opinion. They don’t share, they are in competition.
When I first saw the footage from the garage entrance of GZ I thought then that it was some common NTSC SD camera’s there. Now finding out they were HD camera’s and how it came to broadcast with no “clarification” etc. that also should have been a no no. Disclaimer should have been offered or an apology for the poor quality do to technical error etc. Nope, and Beasly should be able to track it down if they wish
