Perpetually Aggrieved: Virginia City Councilwoman Deems Student Quilt Horribly Racist…

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — A city councilwoman says a quilt made by a group of students should not be allowed to hang in the Martinsville City administration building.

She says the quilt is offensive to African Americans.  But the students who made it say it showcases what they learned working on a special project.

It’s a story that’s got plenty of people talking.

It was supposed to be a nice gesture from students at the Piedmont Governor’s School in Martinsville.  Each student made a quilt square.  But one representing their journey learning about the area with a black stick figure offended councilwoman Sharon Brooks-Hodge.

On Thursday, the jurors’ focus seemed to remain on  codefendant Eileen O’Neill. The jury returned to court once, to have the testimony of a prosecution witness read back.

Lisa Dungee testified that she saw O’Neill in 2009 and believed she was a doctor.

O’Neill, 56, of Phoenixville, worked in Gosnell’s family practice at the Women’s Medical Society clinic at 3801 Lancaster Ave. But she was not licensed, and prosecutors allege that she could not legally see patients unless Gosnell was in the clinic. (more…)

First, here is a recap [excerpt]  from Orlando Sentinel’s Rene Stutzman:   […] Paperwork made public today shows that attorneys for the prosecution and defense were in Miami Thursday and Friday and deposed 12 people, including Trayvon’s step-mother and cousin.

The names of all but one – Trayvon’s cousin – were not in the deposition notice.

It’s not clear who the others are or what they told attorneys.

But in court Tuesday, Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda referred to the sworn testimony of a Miami-Dade schools official.

[…]  Trayvon was a junior at Dr. Michael Krops High School in Miami-Dade and was on suspension at the time because school officials found an empty marijuana baggie in his backpack.

On Oct. 19, over opposition from the state and Trayvon’s family, Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson ordered the Miami-Dade school system to surrender Trayvon’s school records to defense attorneys. (more…)

Philadelphia – Kermit Gosnell has been in jail since his January 2011 arrest after authorities raided his abortion clinic.

The jury in the Gosnell murder trial is expected to deliver a verdict soon, and the abortion “doctor” is housed at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility.

He is currently in solitary confinement pending the verdict and his expected sentencing. That’s because, according to one local reporter in Philadelphia, fellow prisoners don’t take his crimes of killing babies in infanticides too kindly. (read more)
