I had some stock from my mom’s estate from 2010 and thru various changes, I had stock in Discovery. I got a check in the mail thinking it was a small dividend check. They sold all my shares. A rather hefty sum. Not a couple $100. No share for share in new Skydance like these things usually do.

From what I read, the straight sell of all stocks for cash and no share for share was to keep Malone or other big money billionaires out of the new company. Basically, if you want to be in, you have to buy in. And of course, share for share is usually tax neutral. These big money folks may have a hefty tax bill based off of cost basis.

I may have a pretty significant tax bill. I don’t know what my cost basis will be.
