Several times yesterday, the preacher, looking into the revelation of our Creator in His Word, exclaimed “you just can’t make this up”! The mind of man would never come up with the Trinity. The Creator is sovereign and works what He wills. Time is irrelevant to Him. He is beyond our comprehension but Love draws Him to us and us to Him. Jesus said that if we see Him, we have seen the Father. May God in His fullness dwell in us for eternity.

Biography: Invented the automatic pop-up toaster we know and love today.
Strite’s toaster heated both sides of a slice of bread at the same time, included a timer that turned off the electricity when finished and a spring that popped up the toast when the electricity turned off. All unique advances at the time.
In 1921, Strite received U.S. patent #1,394,450 for the device, he named the “Toastmaster” and set up the Waters Genter company to manufacture and market it. In 1926 the company began selling the Toastmaster model 1-A-1, the first automatic pop-up toaster made for home use.
The company was a success and was further boosted by Otto Frederick Rohwedder’s invention of the bread slicing machine in 1928. Toasters became extremely popular, selling 1 million units annually by 1930.

In today’s first reading, the Lord—speaking through his prophet—tells the Gentile King Cyrus of Persia that he has been chosen to help the people of Israel. He calls Cyrus his “anointed” and says that he has called him “by name” to free the Jewish people from their exile in Babylon (Isaiah 45:1, 4). Finally, he announces, “I am the Lord and there is no other, there is no God besides me” (45:5).
I am the Lord. God makes this proclamation throughout the Bible because he knows how easy it can be for us to forget this foundational truth. When he gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, he started by saying, “I am the Lord your God. . . . You shall not have other gods beside me” (Exodus 20:2, 3). Later, Jesus will quote this again when he says, “The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart” (Mark 12:29-30). There is no other god; there is no other “Lord.” All the other gods are false and unable to save.
We may not worship idols as Cyrus did, but we can still turn many of the good things our Father has given us into our own false gods and forget the One who gave them to us. We can also forget that only God can save us.
Our job or our studies, our money, our leisure time, social media, and even our service in our community or parish—all these can become idols for us. If we focus only on making more money or if we invest all our time searching for “likes,” if we focus on serving day and night for the sake of recognition but never turn to the Lord for his wisdom—if we do anything like this, we can forget where our true good comes from. We can end up giving these things the first place in our hearts and remove God from the throne of our lives. And we cut ourselves off from the grace he wants to give us.
God wants us to remember that he alone is our Savior, he alone is our comfort, he alone is our Lord, the sovereign of our lives. So let’s surrender ourselves to him and let him reign in our hearts.

We got our first frost at my central Indiana home. Not what I would call a hard frost, but it is there for all to see in patches in my yard and the field behind it. I will wait until after the first or second hard frost before I bring the log rack in by the fireplace insert and stock it up with wood.
We got Buckley groomed. He has gone from being too hot to being too cold. So last night he got under the covers between Sherry and I and then Gabby the cat came along and laid down on top the covers so she was almost on top of Buckley and laying next to my back. Didn’t bother Buckley at all even though he doesn’t want much to do with the cat when we’re up and about.
rah, we haven’t used our fireplace in the last couple of years since Gus’ multiple surgeries from shoulder to heart to hip and many points in-between.
I am the #1 wood splitter around here and have just not had time.
But I think I’ll break out my mauls and wedges and give it a whirl.
I do love a crackling fire.
I borrow my neighbors gas powered hydraulic splitter. After 4 surgeries below my naval I don’t lift more than 40 lbs anymore and even then if I’m not careful I feel it.
I suggest that if your really going to use it that you get a certified chimney sweep to check it out first.
I had to give up because of osteoarthritis in my back, wrists. thumbs, hips and pretty much every other joint in my body. In my mid fifties the orthopedist told he had never seen anyone that bad not in their nineties. My maternal grandfather and mother had problems too. That was we put in gas. years ago. It’s not a cracklin’ fire, but I am not in unbearable pain either.

I had to quit and put in gas. Osteoarthritis is wracking my body, even carrying in an arm load of wood was to much. My wrists and thumbs are so bad I can’t chop kindling. My orthopedist said in my mid-fifties he had never seen anyone that bad not already in their nineties. That was over It’s inherited, my years ago. My mom and maternal grandfather both had it bad.
So it’s a gas fireplace now, not exactly a cracklin’ fire, but better than nothing.
Also when we bought the house my wife likes it warm, she burnt through a face cord in a two day weekend. She also managed to melt parts of and twist the fire grate plus crack the hearth in multiple places the first year we had the house. I got her slowed down a bit after that, but she still overheated the fireplace when she used it. Gas is better for her too.

COMMENTARY FOR JOHN 14
Christ comforts his disciples. (1-11) He further comforts his disciples. (12-17) He still further comforts his disciples. (18-31)
1-11 Here are three words, upon any of which stress may be laid. Upon the word troubled. Be not cast down and disquieted. The word heart. Let your heart be kept with full trust in God. The word your. However others are overwhelmed with the sorrows of this present time, be not you so. Christ’s disciples, more than others, should keep their minds quiet, when everything else is unquiet. Here is the remedy against this trouble of mind, “Believe.” By believing in Christ as the Mediator between God and man, we gain comfort. The happiness of heaven is spoken of as in a father’s house. There are many mansions, for there are many sons to be brought to glory. Mansions are lasting dwellings. Christ will be the Finisher of that of which he is the Author or Beginner; if he have prepared the place for us, he will prepare us for it. Christ is the sinner’s Way to the Father and to heaven, in his person as God manifest in the flesh, in his atoning sacrifice, and as our Advocate. He is the Truth, as fulfilling all the prophecies of a Saviour; believing which, sinners come by him the Way. He is the Life, by whose life-giving Spirit the dead in sin are quickened. Nor can any man draw nigh God as a Father, who is not quickened by Him as the Life, and taught by Him as the Truth, to come by Him as the Way. By Christ, as the Way, our prayers go to God, and his blessings come to us; this is the Way that leads to rest, the good old Way. He is the Resurrection and the Life. All that saw Christ by faith, saw the Father in Him. In the light of Christ’s doctrine, they saw God as the Father of lights; and in Christ’s miracles, they saw God as the God of power. The holiness of God shone in the spotless purity of Christ’s life. We are to believe the revelation of God to man in Christ; for the works of the Redeemer show forth his own glory, and God in him.
12-17 Whatever we ask in Christ’s name, that shall be for our good, and suitable to our state, he shall give it to us. To ask in Christ’s name, is to plead his merit and intercession, and to depend upon that plea. The gift of the Spirit is a fruit of Christ’s mediation, bought by his merit, and received by his intercession. The word used here, signifies an advocate, counsellor, monitor, and comforter. He would abide with the disciples to the end of time; his gifts and graces would encourage their hearts. The expressions used here and elsewhere, plainly denote a person, and the office itself includes all the Divine perfections. The gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed upon the disciples of Christ, and not on the world. This is the favour God bears to his chosen. As the source of holiness and happiness, the Holy Spirit will abide with every believer for ever.
18-24 Christ promises that he would continue his care of his disciples. I will not leave you orphans, or fatherless, for though I leave you, yet I leave you this comfort, I will come to you. I will come speedily to you at my resurrection. I will come daily to you in my Spirit; in the tokens of his love, and visits of his grace. I will come certainly at the end of time. Those only that see Christ with an eye of faith, shall see him for ever: the world sees him no more till his second coming; but his disciples have communion with him in his absence. These mysteries will be fully known in heaven. It is a further act of grace, that they should know it, and have the comfort of it. Having Christ’s commands, we must keep them. And having them in our heads, we must keep them in our hearts and lives. The surest evidence of our love to Christ is, obedience to the laws of Christ. There are spiritual tokens of Christ and his love given to all believers. Where sincere love to Christ is in the heart, there will be obedience. Love will be a commanding, constraining principle; and where love is, duty follows from a principle of gratitude. God will not only love obedient believers, but he will take pleasure in loving them, will rest in love to them. He will be with them as his home. These privileges are confined to those whose faith worketh by love, and whose love to Jesus leads them to keep his commandments. Such are partakers of the Holy Spirit’s new-creating grace.
25-27 Would we know these things for our good, we must pray for, and depend on the teaching of the Holy Ghost; thus the words of Jesus will be brought to our remembrance, and many difficulties be cleared up which are not plain to others. To all the saints, the Spirit of grace is given to be a remembrancer, and to him, by faith and prayer, we should commit the keeping of what we hear and know. Peace is put for all good, and Christ has left us all that is really and truly good, all the promised good; peace of mind from our justification before God. This Christ calls his peace, for he is himself our Peace. The peace of God widely differs from that of Pharisees or hypocrites, as is shown by its humbling and holy effects.
28-31 Christ raises the expectations of his disciples to something beyond what they thought was their greatest happiness. His time was now short, he therefore spake largely to them. When we come to be sick, and to die, we may not be capable of talking much to those about us; such good counsel as we have to give, let us give while in health. Observe the prospect Christ had of an approaching conflict, not only with men, but with the powers of darkness. Satan has something in us to perplex us with, for we have all sinned; but when he would disturb Christ, he found nothing sinful to help him. The best evidence of our love to the Father is, our doing as he has commanded us. Let us rejoice in the Saviour’s victories over Satan the prince of this world. Let us copy the example of his love and obedience.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.
