This is one of the hymns we sang at church last Sunday.
The second verse of the hymn is from Acts, chapters 6 and 7. It is the story of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr and one of the first deacons. Based on fake evidence, Stephen is brought before the Sanhedrin. There he presents a concise summary of Old Testament history.
In his speech, Stephen accuses Israel of historic and continued unfaithfulness to God. This results in his being dragged outside and stoned to death. According to scripture, in his final moments Stephen begs God to forgive those who kill him, as he sees a vision of heaven with the risen Christ at the Father’s right hand.

Years ago, during Vietnam, my husband and I and our 2 very young children visited Quebec on vacation.
We were treated so poorly, bordering on cruel, that I had ever experienced. One waitress, had the guts to tell us why – Vietnam, a place my family and friends were actively serving.
I vowed to Never go to Canada again, and never have.
Quebec is a bit different than most of Canada. The French language thing is the problem even inside Canada.. If you don’t speak French they will treat you badly. (Quebec’s law requires that all publicly visible signs and posters must be in French, with any other language being secondary and less prominent.) The French want to protect their heritage and language inside an English settled country still with ties to the Crown.
I have only been to Ontario, the cities of Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Fort Francis, Dryden and Sioux Lookout, but none were like that.
The Canadians are a bit different and can take offense easily, but most were very friendly.

There is a gigantic difference between say Quebec and the western provinces. I have had many western Canadian patients that were great people.
But……that bad taste in my mouth from 1972, was enough to last a lifetime.
Even my 4 year old daughter asked me
why everyone was mad at us!
BTW, the reason I had occasion to meet so many western Canadians was because their socialist “health care” system sucked so badly, they came to us for their surgeries.

which has bloated to $10 million as of this date. Now scheduled for October 23, 2026 pretrial motions will occur, how much more will Utah agree to pay to these ambulance chasers through to the final verdict??? Just sayin…
In court today, Tyler Robinson’s defense didn’t just argue the evidence on whether Charlie Kirk’s killing was politically motivated.
Attorney Richard Novak told the judge that Kirk “spoke hatefully of certain groups of people,” specifically citing his views on gender identity, homosexuality, and sex outside marriage.
Erika Kirk and Charlie’s parents were visibly shaken as they sat and listened to accusations that Kirk was hateful.
This was a bind-over hearing. The question before the court was probable cause and whether the shooting targeted Kirk for his political expression.
The judge bound Robinson over on all charges, including the victim-targeting enhancement that keeps the death penalty on the table. Robinson pleaded not guilty.
Who gets to define “hateful speech”?! Charlie was a Christian and spoke what he believed was the TRUTH according to the Bible. Charlie’s intent was not to be hurtful or hateful-just to speak truth.
They should have to show proof of their statement. And how would that be a defense anyway? You don’t get to kill someone b/c you don’t like what you think you heard them say or what someone said they said/believe.

James dies.
Peter walks out of prison.
Herod is eaten by worms.

There is one thing about that story that bugs me. It’s unspoken aftermath. Peter, the man chosen by Jesus to lead His Church. The man who clearly leads Christ’s Church at the start of Acts. The man who received visions to guide the Church to spread the Word to Gentiles. Is not leading His Church at the end of Acts.
Instead, when Peter has a dispute with Paul, James the Brother of Jesus, The Usurper of Peter’s role, decides the dispute.
When Jesus was choosing Peter to lead His Church, that James was a hostile disbeliever. When Jesus was strengthening Peter after the Resurrection, he graced James by appearing to him too. When Peter and the apostles received the Holy Spirit, James and Jesus family had been praying. But now, he had risen to the point where he was to lead Jerusalem in Peter’s absence. Not another Apostle.
But since James was not raised by Jesus to lead His Church, his leading Jerusalem should have been under Peter. It wasn’t. James had put himself above Peter.
Like Peter and Paul, James gets martyred in the run up to the Jewish revolt. Peter and Paul in Rome, James in Jerusalem. But Jerusalem gets destroyed. And much later, the leadership Peter lost gets taken as the reason the Roman Bishop has priority over all others.
There is a 4th century story that Christians had seen the prophesied warning signs and escaped to Pella before Jerusalem was destroyed. Makes me wonder why James’s successor didn’t claim authority to lead the Church from Pella.
Pella also presents itself as a possible path for preservation of flammable relics. Jerusalem was looted and was burned! But that is a whole different kettle of fish. Midway between Christ and Constantine, Christians were preserving the bones of Martyrs as holy relics, not things from Jerusalem. And Helena later claimed to have found the “true cross” in Jerusalem, not Pella.
Peter walking ou of prison is my favorite Bible story.
Peter is in prison once again.
The Romans in charge have him in a cell chained to two Roman prison guards, one guard for each of Peters hands.
There are two guards just outside the cell door and guards all through the place.
Peter is trying to rest a bit in his cell when an Angel appears and tells him it is time to leave the place.
Peters chains fall off and the guards he was chained to do not wake.
The cell door opens and Peter and the Angel walk out right in front of the guards at the door who do not notice.
Peter and the Angel continue salking through the prison and out the front door.
No one sees them.
Peter goes to the home where the followers of Christ are gathered to pray for him.
He knocks on the door and the person who opens it slams it shut on him, they think Peter is dead and his ghost is standing there not the real live Peter.
He knocks again and they realize it is the real live Peter.

Biography: Christiaan Neethling Barnard was a South African cardiac surgeon who performed the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant. His landmark operation in 1967 marked a significant milestone in medical history.
Born in South Africa, Christiaan Barnard was the son of a minister, Adam Barnard, and Maria Elisabeth de Swart. He excelled in his studies, graduating from Beaufort West High School in 1940.
Barnard received his MB ChB degree from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1945. He completed his medical training at Groote Schuur Hospital, where he later earned a Master of Medicine and a doctorate for his work on diseases such as tuberculous meningitis and intestinal atresia.
Barnard subsequently received a scholarship to train in the United States with esteemed surgeons like Owen Harding Wangensteen and Walt Lillehei. On his return to South Africa, he led the Department of Experimental Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital.
At Groote Schuur, Barnard ventually becoming a full-time lecturer and Director of Surgical Research at the University of Cape Town. By 1961, he was appointed Head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the university.
The pivotal moment of Barnard’s career occurred on December 3, 1967, when he performed the first successful heart transplant on patient Louis Washkansky, using the heart of Denise Darvall, a young woman who had died in an accident.
Although Washkansky succumbed to pneumonia 18 days after the operation, the procedure was a medical triumph and put Barnard on the global stage. His subsequent transplant on Philip Blaiberg, who survived for 19 months, demonstrated the further potential of this new surgical method.
Barnard continued to innovate by developing the heterotopic heart transplant technique and exploring the potential of xenotransplantation with animal hearts. While setbacks such as organ rejection were common, his persistence helped promote the use of cyclosporine, significantly improving transplant success rates.

Very moving experience. I tried to imagine the scene in 1945. Wish more people cared, but the truth is we are “fading away.”
My father-in-law, a Navy gunnery sergeant, was standing on that deck somewhere when the treaty was signed.

These are such a nice surprise. My old Vermonter grandma was a school teacher, back when they actually taught.
She used to have these type books when we visited and had us read them to her. Tearing up just recalling those days.

COMMENTARY FOR EXODUS 33
The Lord refuses to go with Israel. (1-6) The tabernacle of Moses removed without the camp. (7-11) Moses desires to see the glory of God. (12-23)1-6 Those whom God pardons, must be made to know what their sin deserved. “Let them go forward as they are;” this was very expressive of God’s displeasure. Though he promises to make good his covenant with Abraham, in giving them Canaan, yet he denies them the tokens of his presence they had been blessed with. The people mourned for their sin. Of all the bitter fruits and consequences of sin, true penitents most lament, and dread most, God’s departure from them. Canaan itself would be no pleasant land without the Lord’s presence. Those who parted with ornaments to maintain sin, could do no less than lay aside ornaments, in token of sorrow and shame for it.
7-11 Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp. This seems to have been a temporary building, set up for worship, and at which he judged disputes among the people. The people looked after him; they were very desirous to be at peace with God, and concerned to know what would come to pass. The cloudy pillar which had withdrawn from the camp when it was polluted with idolatry, now returned. If our hearts go forth toward God to meet him, he will graciously come to meet us.
12-23 Moses is very earnest with God. Thus, by the intercession of Christ, we are not only saved from ruin, but become entitled to everlasting happiness. Observe here how he pleads. We find grace in God’s sight, if we find grace in our hearts to guide and quicken us in the way of our duty. Moses speaks as one who dreaded the thought of going forward without the Lord’s presence. God’s gracious promises, and mercy towards us, should not only encourage our faith, but also excite our fervency in prayer. Observe how he speeds. See, in a type, Christ’s intercession, which he ever lives to make for all that come to God by him; and that it is not by any thing in those for whom he intercedes. Moses then entreats a sight of God’s glory, and is heard in that also. A full discovery of the glory of God, would overwhelm even Moses himself. Man is mean, and unworthy of it; weak, and could not bear it; guilty, and could not but dread it. The merciful display which is made in Christ Jesus, alone can be borne by us. The Lord granted that which would abundantly satisfy. God’s goodness is his glory; and he will have us to know him by the glory of his mercy, more than by the glory of his majesty. Upon the rock there was a fit place for Moses to view the goodness and glory of God. The rock in Horeb was typical of Christ the Rock; the Rock of refuge, salvation, and strength. Happy are they who stand upon this Rock. The cleft may be an emblem of Christ, as smitten, crucified, wounded, and slain. What follows, denotes the imperfect knowledge of God in the present state, even as revealed in Christ; for this, when compared with the heavenly sight of him. is but like seeing a man that is gone by, whose back only is to be seen. God in Christ, as he is, even the fullest and brightest displays of his glory, grace, and goodness, are reserved to another state.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

just caught a few minutes of weather reporting on tv.
so tired of the disingenuous coverage of weather “events”.
today, as usual, the weather channels are showing video of every
culvert, flood plain, low lying area, canal, or otherwise dedicated area for run-off,
whether near full or actively flowing, as evidence of catastrophe in Texas.
but what they’re showing is mostly WATER GOING WHERE IT’S DIRECTED.
the point is, they devalue the impact of the actual flooding,
water over-washing homes, towns, and infrastructure in a dangerous fashion.
a flooded viaduct is par for the course in heavy rains –
why would people pay attention to that? – and that’s the problem.
maybe these channels should invest in a drone for more accurate coverage,
instead of some breathless on the spot anchorette bracing herself
against the 20 mph breeze in water up to her shoes.
