COMMENTARY FOR MATTHEW 20

The parable of the labourers in the vineyard. (1-16) Jesus again foretells his sufferings. (17-19) The ambition of James and John. (20-28) Jesus gives sight to two blind men near Jericho. (29-34)

1-16 The direct object of this parable seems to be, to show that though the Jews were first called into the vineyard, at length the gospel should be preached to the Gentiles, and they should be admitted to equal privileges and advantages with the Jews. The parable may also be applied more generally, and shows, 1. That God is debtor to no man. 2. That many who begin last, and promise little in religion, sometimes, by the blessing of God, arrive at a great deal of knowledge, grace, and usefulness. 3. That the recompense of reward will be given to the saints, but not according to the time of their conversion. It describes the state of the visible church, and explains the declaration that the last shall be first, and the first last, in its various references. Till we are hired into the service of God, we are standing all the day idle: a sinful state, though a state of drudgery to Satan, may be called a state of idleness. The market-place is the world, and from that we are called by the gospel. Come, come from this market-place. Work for God will not admit of trifling. A man may go idle to hell, but he that will go to heaven, must be diligent. The Roman penny was sevenpence halfpenny in our money, wages then enough for the day’s support. This does not prove that the reward of our obedience to God is of works, or of debt; when we have done all, we are unprofitable servants; but it signifies that there is a reward set before us, yet let none, upon this presumption, put off repentance till they are old. Some were sent into the vineyard at the eleventh hour; but nobody had hired them before. The Gentiles came in at the eleventh hour; the gospel had not been before preached to them. Those that have had gospel offers made them at the third or sixth hour, and have refused them, will not have to say at the eleventh hour, as these had, No man has hired us. Therefore, not to discourage any, but to awaken all, be it remembered, that now is the accepted time. The riches of Divine grace are loudly murmured at, among proud Pharisees and nominal Christians. There is great proneness in us to think that we have too little, and others too much of the tokens of God’s favour; and that we do too much, and others too little in the work of God. But if God gives grace to others, it is kindness to them, and no injustice to us. Carnal worldlings agree with God for their penny in this world; and choose their portion in this life. Obedient believers agree with God for their penny in the other world, and must remember they have so agreed. Didst not thou agree to take up with heaven as thy portion, thy all; wilt thou seek for happiness in the creature? God punishes none more than they deserve, and recompenses every service done for him; he therefore does no wrong to any, by showing extraordinary grace to some. See here the nature of envy. It is an evil eye, which is displeased at the good of others, and desires their hurt. It is a grief to ourselves, displeasing to God, and hurtful to our neighbours: it is a sin that has neither pleasure, profit, nor honour. Let us forego every proud claim, and seek for salvation as a free gift. Let us never envy or grudge, but rejoice and praise God for his mercy to others as well as to ourselves…

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me. 

Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Did anyone know that there were at least three versions of the Torah around when Jesus lived?
And that the Dead Sea Scrolls included all of them?
And that all three have both minor and major differences?

Some give primacy to the version preserved by Jewish practice. But even that is disputed.

There is a Samaritan Torah. The Greek Torah translation, Septuagint. And what we know of as the Masoretic text.

The Samaritans built their own temple in the 5th century BC. And their own Torah justifying building that temple. They never accepted any other books as divine scripture.

In Egypt in the mid 3rd century BC, preexisting versions of the Hebrew scrolls were translated to Greek. The rest of the texts were translated over the next 150 years or so.

Near the same time, some of the scrolls saved near the Dead Sea were being written. These scrolls were collected over time until 68 AD.

The Masoretic text was preserved around 900 AD or 1000 AD. But it is believed that great care was taken in preserving it.

The Greek was maintained by Jews, but that spread it around the Jewish Diaspora and was taken in later by Greek speaking Christians. Because of that we have earlier intact (Christian) versions from about 400 AD. There is some question of whether the Greek or Hebrew was used to worship even in Judea.

The Dead Sea Library basically contained the Hebrew version, Hebrew versions of the Greek and some Samaritan. (And a whole lot of other books as well. Only one Bible book is missing.) The oldest intact Samaritan version is from about 1200 AD. The Samaritan has over 6000 differences with the Masoretic, mostly minor, of which 1900 are like the Septuagint. Because it has similarities to both, it is assumed The Samaritan Torah was written last.

It is funny how people can find 2600 differences between the Dead Sea Great Isaiah Scroll and the Masoretic Isaiah, mostly minor differences, and claim that proves the Masoretic Text is unchanged and was the original Torah yet find similar numbers of minor differences with other types.

Speaking of which, we now have evidence of at least two Hebrew variations of the Torah existing in the 3rd century BC.

Most, but not all, the Old Testament scripture quotations in our New Testament are from the Greek. There are even theological implications that Justin Martyr argued using the Greek as superior and more accurate over the Hebrew. But for some reason, the Hebrew supremacy took over and most of our English bibles get the OT from the Masoretic. It started with Jerome making the Vulgate, but was also a Protestant Reform thing.

Oddly enough, while all Jews at Jesus time considered the Torah to be divine scripture, the rest of the Jewish Bible was under dispute. The Jewish OT is divided into Law, Prophets and Writings. All of the books were written prior to Jesus’ time. Some say that the Sadducees accepted only the Torah, the Law, as divine. The Pharisees accepted the Law and the Prophets and a few of the Writings as divinely inspired. You might remember Jesus using that very phrase. There is recorded debate of the Pharisee acceptance of the last of the writings between 100 AD and 200 AD.

The Greek translations included books that never made it in to the Hebrew Scriptures. And there are a few other variations in what various Christians believe to be Scripture.

When we look at Christian New Testament variations, there is an equally confusing variation. There is a hidden nature bias in declaring what was the original. Anything used in a wet climate gets lost. Anything saved in a dry climate can survive. And yes, there are major differences.

One major difference that bugs me is that many of the “earliest” end Mark at 16:8. The tomb is empty and fear is spreading. Just look at the note before verses 9-20. https://www.biblestudytools.com/mark/16.html Somebody got rid of the Markian witnesses to Jesus physical Resurrection. And today that is used to claim your Bible was changed pushing to change it back.

The odd thing is that most of those verses were quoted by church fathers over 200 years before those “earliest” manuscripts were bound. To me, that disproves the use of those “earliest” manuscripts as foundational. And makes the entire change the Bible effort into a dishonest fraud.

It is not so easy to know what the Bible was originally. Even within its verses there are tales of the Bible changing. King Josiah “found” unknown scriptures kept in the temple and had them read to the people. Original and “lost”, or new? Ezra is commissioned by the Persian King to impose Ezra’s Bible on the Jews. We aren’t told of changes, but Ezra forces all the priests to divorce their “intermarriages” or be permanently removed as priests. Clearly the returned exiles were following different priestly rules than Ezra’s.

But we don’t have originals. And we are not likely to find even earlier copies. As implied above, 200 years after Ezra there are at least 2 Hebrew versions of Torah. Is one his? Neither? Why not just one version? How often did scriptures change in the past? Ours are still changing today.

Anyways, our scriptures are complicated. Not only do we have to worry about translating them correctly, we have to worry about which source is used to translate from. And all the BS that the “experts” use to bias those choices.

I’m sure glad this degenerate murderer didn’t get a “new trial”

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and his family as they seek to lead America back to You. Also, we pray for Angels to protect and support our Sundance as he works for justice and peace.
