More recognition of the right to repair is a good thing beyond just automobiles. It’s a big issue now with farm equipment.
Ditto for so called durable goods like dishwashers, dryers, washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.
I think that if we can’t repair it, we really don’t even own it- yet we’ve paid for it.

This is what happened to John Deere equipment. most of the tractor, etc is proprietary equipment that requires a JD tech to fix. Dealers love it, farmers NOT SO MUCH.
My new AC unit A frame coil drain has a senor on it to shutdown the AC if the drain clogs. Look at hot water heater controls, all electronic and prone to failure. Window curtains without drawstrings to raise and lower.
Industry has to idiot proof their products bec the country is filling up w idiots.
If you talk about privately owned cars and light trucks, the newer ones (last twenty years or so) have gotten so complicated that even many professional auto repair people have a hard time finding out what is wrong and fixing it. The older ones who could fix anything, even with manuals in many cases, have a hard time figuring out newer vehicle problems. And the younger ones often have a hard time figuring out anything unless there is a sensor or computer system telling them what is wrong, and if that is not telling them in real clear terms what the issue is, then they are hopeless. And these are mechanics and supervisors who should know more than most owners.
So most owners will have a real hard time figuring out mechanical problems, much less fixing them, without this change in the law, and even then will have a big problem making whatever fix is required. But there has to be at least the chance of fixing it on your own. The manufacturers have been limiting owner ability to make repairs and it all comes down to making sure the owner pays to make repairs.
And then you have all the government regulations that have put all kinds of new electronics in vehicles, making every vehicle more complicated. It can even be hard to find what you need to make a repair to, or to even access that item in the engine compartment or other areas of your vehicle, unless you have a full-scale well equipped shop at your disposal. But at least recognizing a “right to repair” gives us some chance.

This was for a 2004 Mazda 3.
All cars sold in America has to have an OBDII code reader adapter plug. Buy OBDII code reader with a manual, but either way, you can search the code online. Codes usually have more than one problem, but it can save you a lot of time and money.
Is that the same thing the guy from the auto parts store plugs in my car when I drive in and tell him I have a problem? And they didn’t charge me anything to check it. I’m in small town.

I had a fairly new washing machine recently go on the fritz. The longtime repair shop I have always used informed me that they closed their service shop ten years ago. I was referred to another appliance shop.
That referral was also a dead end, no longer in the repair business either. I was finally given someone’s home phone number, and was advised which part to order on Amazon so they could fix it.
I must admit I was shocked that these appliance repair shops no longer existed. However, it should not be a surprise given the preponderance of cheap Chinese junk out there. It’s usually cheaper to just replace it.
I also have an oven that can’t be repaired since the part is no longer available.
And the market for selling used appliances to buyers, is sssslow.
But, there is a place or 2 that might accept a donation of a used (if new) appliance.
Been there with the repair person that says, oh, it looks like it needs a new ___ model chip.
Then looks it up and well sorry, that specific ___ model chip is not available as of a year ago.
(but, in one case, the repairman did do a bypass of a water level sensor (that was sending an error digital signal to the machine), and the washing machine worked well, again)…
but, that signaled that the 5 yr machine could be on the cusp of some other ____ model chip malfunction. So… it was unwanted shopping time… and finding that new washing machines (with a lot of unneeded digital bells and whistles -things that do not have a long life) have a life of 5-10 years. (very short)

Have a Kenmore washing machine that came with the house. Made in 1993. Been using it for 27 years without a repair. Turn the dial and pull the knob. Speed Queen Dryer has a dial too.
We used our Sears refrigerator for 20 years and my sister took it and used it for 20 more, although she had to put a tightening hasp lock on the door, it still worked because her husband knew how to fix it.
Anyone buying washers and dryers – I would recommend Speed Queen. Been using mine for 10 years and no problems. Got it because I saw it was the only one made in the US.

when my Mom and Dad got married in April 1948, they were “poor as church mice” – one of their necessities of life was Dad’s welding supply – filling his tank with the gas he needed for his torch for making repairs on the cars – they could go to one of the “pick-a-part” places to find what he needed – Mom remembers going to a place on Raymond Avenue in Pasadena (California) but there were still many places out in the San Fernando Valley as well for many years.

I was looking for parts at a salvage yard in Arkansas during the “cash for clunkers” 0-bama scam. The yard owner told me that the feds paid him a visit to make sure he was putting liquid glass in the engines and running them until they locked up so that they were no longer rebuildable. 0-bama & associates were after total control, everybody dependent upon the new vehicle laws he had up his sleeve — like engines that shut off at every stoplight, built-in remote kill switches, etc.
Speaking of Pick a Part, I’ve probably been to most of those wrecking yards in the San Fernando valley, there were some very big ones on the east end around Sunland and San Fernando. I’d buy cars for $100 and fix them up. Good ol days.
If you own your own vehicle, you can do whatever you want to it. If there is some kind of law that says you can’t, then that law is invalid and should be ignored. It’s yours – you can do what you will. Anything other than that is an obviously unconstitutional seizure. And if they persist, that’s when Citizen Vigilante should become a verb.

Uncle in law bought a John Deere a few years back and what they charge for repairs is astronomical between requiring one of their techs on site with the diagnostics equipment and with marked up parts.
So my brother ended up doing a field repair on the tractor using a technically compatible automotive fuel pump that is significantly cheaper, even when accounting for the limited operational lifespan of the replacement part.

HD, I farmed for 55 yrs in Texas and on our farm [eventually increasing to 2500 acres] we only had one new tractor in my Dads and my lifetime. What they are getting rid of is when JD said all of their info that went into the laptops their mechanics carried to the field to do repairs, were proprietary property of JD. There are a lot of farmers with Dr. degrees in mechanics that can read that info and do the repairs themselves, but without the info you are screwed; you have to have a laptop that will plug into the support ports and have the software to figure out what is wrong. There is a new law that has been passed that says this info is public property and not JD’s. Cg

Could this be why I see Kubota (sp?) equipment in large flat fields here in my area and not John Deeres? These fields are so large I have been told they use GPS to plow those beautiful straight lines and they sit right next to the Missouri River. Black dirt as far as you can see after they are plowed. It’s a beautiful sight.
I read an article about a farmer with a new John Deere tractor he paid around $350,000 for. It had been down multiple times because of a wiring problem, and some computer misinterpreting a signal it was expecting to see.
Days waiting for a tech to come out and hook up his laptop and then pay $2500 each time.
No farmer can stay in business long if their massively expensive equipment is dead in the field for days waiting on some tech to show up.
I grew up on a farm with JD equipment. Dad and Grandpa farmed for many years with a JD5020, JD4020 and a JD combine. I recall them having to go to the dealership less than 5 times for any parts, and usually they were wear parts expected to wear out over time.
The last time I was in a JD dealership was to pick up bolts I ordered for a baler clutch. Close to $7 each for bolts found at any hardware store, and they didn’t even have all the bolts I needed. I was told that was all that was sent, and the guy walked away.
As for the EO’s, I am very happy to see it mention MODIFYING since I can now get a new diesel truck, pay a shop to have so much smog crap removed that kills MPG and have it tuned properly so it will do what I paid for.
That DEF tech is nothing but trouble for diesel engines, arguably by design.
Makes normally very reliable vehicles intrinsically unreliable. Don’t think I’ve heard of a commercial truck getting a million miles or heck even a tenth or much, much less of that without a major breakdown since that tech that was mandated.
My current truck is 14 years old with over 300,000 miles on it, and I will keep running it until it drops. I believe it was the last model year offered without DEF.
I’ve read enough about newer trucks with constant DEF and other problems that I just don’t want to deal with or pay to have it sit in the shop.
My wife often drives it pulling a horse trailer locally, and she doesn’t need to put up with it breaking down beside the road.

I did most of the repairs on my dad’s old Allis-Chalmers tractor — replaced a bad piston, converted the charging system from 6 volt to 12V, and any thing else it needed — for a few bucks total cost each time.

That four-year hiatus was a critical factor. As terrible as it has been for so many in the country who’ve lost family members due to the invasion, this current cabinet and effectiveness is very different than what we would’ve seen had his two terms been back to back. The continuous lawfare would’ve given him no break to assemble team 46. I doubt that we would’ve seen the combined group of Bessent, Gabbard, Rubio, and others. The USMCA was not up for renewal / withdrawal until next month. The loons thought that they would seize every penny from him and incarcerate him into perpetuity, never contemplating that he would run again and win. When his motorcade drove through that poor neighborhood after leaving the Fulton County courthouse I saw something unexpected and remarkable along the streets. The “Elvis mugshot” the following day told me that they overplayed their hand.
And Pence would’ve been VP in administration 46.

This is a really big deal for Farmers and Ranchers. You can spend 100’s of thousands of dollars on tractors, combines, etc., often now run with sophisticated software, and when something goes boink (right in the middle of harvest season!!!!), you are at the mercy of Manufacturers/Retailers and it costs even more. It’s ridiculous and criminal in my opinion. And people wonder why the price of food is so high. It’s just another piece of the puzzle that needed fixin’. Thank you President Trump.

Your point is well taken though. I’ve seen it personally. Not just a house or a neighborhood but whole towns suddenly changed. Subdivisions that attracted families are overnight filled with Somali or Eastern African migrants. A neighborhood park where kids used to play is now congregated by dozens of new residents and the kids don’t go there anymore.
Older homes being sold and then torn down for multi family apartment buildings that are tall so they cut off any light to your home. The occupants are less than friendly.

It may be too late. I used to tinker around a bit but newer cars have so much electronics in them that the ordinary guy cannot figure out.
A lot of new cars these days have even made a battery replacement impossible. Some require that the battery be scanned before the swap and you need the equipment to do the swap properly.
The battery needs to be scanned first? Sounds like it is directly keyed and has to be matched and the computer programmed with it. Should be completely unnecessary.
It is the sort of setup where it will not function correctly or probably not even at all without manufacturer authenticated parts in it. literally designed to not accept less expensive but functionally identical parts and really is license to just mark up the parts for extra $$$.
Much of the same business model with HP printers and the ink cartridges that cost an arm and a leg.
If I remember correctly it has to do with the battery management system of the car.
A complication along with a secondary battery to operate the mandated automatic engine start/stop “feature” starting with the 2016 models if I remember right.
Until I joined the HP ink program, ink was costing me almost $80 at Walmart for both cartridges.

No spare part shops anywhere near. No mobiles in those days. So my dad took his pocket knife, broke a medium sized branch from a small tree and carved the part needed from wood. It would and we safely continued our journey to the big city where he could buy a spare part. Old fashioned ingenuity.
Mind you in WW2 my dad was too young for combat so when he joined up at 15 (lied about his age) he became an aircraft mechanic in the airforce.

Some people do not like adding DEF ( Diesel Exhaust Fluid i.e. diluted pig urine ) to diesel engine exhaust systems, and would seek a way to bypass the DEF system – at a risk of being fined (if caught), and a mechanic losing a mechanic permit.
Also, some people do not like gps trackers embedded in the electronics of their vehicle.
And other people like to carefully apply touch up paint (without environmental controls) to nicks along the vehicle exterior (without the insurance / body shop process).
Even the simple act of changing the oil is becoming increasingly difficult. Communities are barring people from working on their cars. Manufacturers want proof that you did it properly and on time using the proper oil.

She was nominated because she was confirmable, which was important, given she was replacing liberal RBG, and it was an election year. Trump had to get 50 votes (plus the VP as a tie-breaker) out of the GOP Senate caucus.
Confirmability shouldn’t be an issue, with the GOP controlling the Senate, but given the likes of Collins, Murkowski and others, Trump has had to consider this when choosing a new justice.
I was young at the time, but recall the Bork nomination to the Supreme Court. He was nominated in early July 1987 and rejected by the Senate in late October. While I would love a firebrand like Scalia, the reality of the senate confirmation process plays a factor.
