CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — A pair of powerful earthquakes rocked Venezuela, tearing down buildings, closing the country’s main airport and sending panicked residents of the capital pouring into the streets. At least 32 have died, the acting president said Thursday, warning that the toll was expected to rise. (more)

U.S. Secretary of State Rubio said in a post on X early Thursday that the United States is “immediately deploying search and rescue teams, medical resources, and humanitarian assistance to Venezuela.”
Rodríguez — who became acting president after an American military operation captured her predecessor, Nicolás Maduro, and brought him to the U.S. to stand trial — thanked U.S. President Donald Trump. She said in an X post later that she spoke with Rubio by phone without sharing details. She also expressed thanks to the leaders of various nations who have sent messages of support and offers of help.
Ecuador ordered the delivery of humanitarian aid, and Rodríguez said Qatar, Mexico and El Salvador had already sent rescue personnel.
“We send you all our solidarity and our prayers. Stay strong, Venezuela,” El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, once diametrically opposed to Venezuela’s government, wrote in a post on X. {source}
The U.S. Geological Survey said the first earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.2, hit west of Moron on the Caribbean coast, about 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of Caracas. It had a depth of 22 kilometers (about 14 miles).
The USGS reported a second 7.5 magnitude earthquake just a minute later, with a depth of 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) and an epicenter 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Moron.

The United States extends our deepest condolences to the people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes.
Our hearts are with all those who have lost loved ones, those injured, and the courageous rescue workers working tirelessly in the aftermath.
America stands…

That is astounding.
I just commented on another thread that I was in a 7.2 earthquake several years ago. We literally could not stand. I cannot imagine having two such earthquakes back to back.
Those are certainly memorable events…glad you are ok…
We had a few, brief ones, in the old Canal Zone…in the 4 range…
Watching our living room floor tile move like there was wave water underneath was the eeriest thing I had ever seen. And no broken tiles…and the weighted chains on Mom’s cuckoo clock, dancing, were the first sign…
The red tiles in the last video (landings of staircase), remind me of home back in the Zone/Panama…those tiles last forever…back in the 70’s we had them…and they were old, then…and everywhere…
A very tragic event…have been praying for the people of Venezuela…based on a blurb I read yesterday, stats from the model the USGS uses, indicated anywhere from 10k to 100k possible fatalities. That is Biblical? !
I have not read if there were after shocks or if the second quake was the aftershock…
Our builder in office, no doubt has this covered…his heart must be in pain, seeing all the building collapses…
This is where the USAID money should have gone…for things like this…
I checked this website.
https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=-89.99487,-286.875&extent=89.99474,317.8125&listOnlyShown=true&timeZone=utc&map=false
I’m surprised there are not constant aftershocks.
I just looked…and was reminded that the Philippines had one, recently…but the list is impressive…!
Yes. 7.8.
Dear Lord, have mercy!

Didn’t realize Venezuelan sits near two fault lines/plates:
Venezuela sits on a complex strike-slip fault zone where the Caribbean Plate and South American Plate slide past each other, creating a high risk for significant seismic events. Historically, the country has experienced approximately 180 damaging earthquakes, with major events occurring roughly every 30 to 35 years.
The most catastrophic event in recorded history was the 1812 earthquake (magnitude 7.5–7.7), which devastated Caracas and Mérida, killing an estimated 15,000 to 30,000 people and impacting the political landscape of the War of Independence. Other major historical disasters include the 1894 Mérida earthquake (magnitude 7.0, ~350 deaths), the 1900 Miranda earthquake (magnitude 7.6–7.7, 101+ deaths), and the 1967 Caracas earthquake (magnitude 6.6), which led to stricter building codes.
Recent significant events include the 1997 Cariaco earthquake (magnitude 7.0, 81 deaths), the 2018 Sucre earthquake (magnitude 7.3, 5 deaths), and a September 2025 sequence near Mene Grande (magnitudes 6.2 and 6.3) that caused severe damage.
JUST Far Enough into HISTORY that Engineers / Builders and Politicians DO NOT HEED the Occurrences

As we comment here 1.000s of people are searching for their loved ones under rubble or trying to contact loved ones that were in the effected area. Keep them in your prayers.
prayers up ………
I experienced two relatively minor earthquakes, one in 1988 in Tokyo while visiting my brother, and the 2011 Virginia earthquake while in my office in DC. In both cases all of a sudden you feel as if you are untethered from the Earth! The ground won’t help you, walls feel like jelly, and you’re immobile from the fear. All one is left with is your loved ones and God.
I pray that God is manifested in the rescuers and medical personnel sent to help the people of Venezuela.
The Earth is shaking!
Lest we forget…
“The Lord has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all.”
Psalms 103:19
Romans 8:22 – “For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.”
Earthquakes do horrible things. But dead planets are worse, much worse.
Ummmm…. What?!
We have earthquakes because we have a molten core with magnetic fields and plate tectonics. Do without those things, and the planet, as well as all life on it, dies.
Viewed as not having shared Mars’ fate, that scripture is quite correct. Much better to be alive, suffering the pains of being young, than it is to be dead and long gone.
I’ll remember your words when the San Andreas takes out 1/2 of California.
I forget where, but there is a volcano somewhere, ready to blow if it hasn’t already?
The Yellowstone Super Volcano. It will take out much more than the Dutton Ranch!
Venezuela and Japan and Northern California all on the same day.
Add the Filipinas and New Guinea to those three.
A bit of a story here.
In 2013 after the earthquake we had we stayed home for a few days. Fortunately we had plenty of food and water stocked. Our neighbors were safe. We made a trip into town which is just 2 km away but took time as all the bridges had come off their abutments. Gravel was used to create ways to get across the big bumps. Once in town we saw the church. Heavily damaged. The towns only grocery store had collapsed but the owners set up tents and sold stocks from them. There was no power so cash only. We visited friends and family to check on them. The port was closed due to large cracks in the pier.
Calamities like this are learning experiences to help prepare better. As an example we had two meals a day. One would be an instant ramen pack which is a good emergency food. One pack feeds two people.
They say that for the first 72-96 hours you are on your own. I would prepare for a lot longer than that.
Two weeks ago, in the SW burbs of Chicago, we had local power outages at the grocery store, Walmart, gas stations and banks…the only place operating on an in store generator, was Home Depot (go figure). That lasted 2 1/2 days so the pain can be real.
And yes, more than 3 days supplies is preferable. Way more!
Prayers for Venezuela and a legitimate use of US aid without fraud.
Venezuela has the largest oil and gold reserves on earth. Why would they need aid?
They will have immediate needs. Needs that cannot afford to be tied up in those time consuming processes.
Oil and gold does not help with search and rescue!
Great heavens! Thank you for posting these.
The terror that these poor souls must have felt…
I got to experience the 1971 Sylmar-San Fernando California quake as a 12 year old girl. It was a 6.6 quake. The shaking is terrifying. But people don’t think about the noise that the earth makes as it shakes like that.
It truly lets you know how small you are on this planet.
I remember it too. About 60 people died with the collapse of the VA Hospital. I lived in West LA, about 30 miles away, and ran out of my apartment in my underwear!
I was outside with our horses when an earthquake rolled through Southern California. The ground actually rolled. It sounded like a freight train bearing down on us. The horses weren’t afraid, though. And the windows of our house also ‘rolled’, but amazingly, nothing broke.
It’s very sad, but poor construction, and lack of retrofits, in earthquake areas has a lot to do with the extensive damage and death.
Prayers lifted up for these peoples!
Death toll is at 164 but the number of people missing is around 10,000.

Proud of our President Trump for stepping up to our responsibility..
God’s plan is an interesting mystery…
Prayers up.
Inching closer to civil war.
DSA attempting takeover of dem party mirrors MAGA takeover of Repub party. This sets up the truly classic left/right conflict weve seen played out in spain, latin america and many other countries.
Partition or war. Every day rhe choice becomes clearer.

A wee bit off topic, eh?
One is important
That poster has a habit of purposely putting OT content up.
Thanks for the heads up!
The “flag” feature is no longer available.
This destruction…is reminiscent of 9/11 and maybe worse…?
It leaves a hole in one’s heart…
Qatar appears to be quite benevolent. Strange how their name pops up in the most unusual places.
What the hell is up with that map graphic?
Was the earthquake so large that Venezuela is now an island in the Caribean Sea?
The bigger map shows a close up of where the earthquake hit. The smaller, complete image of Venezuela shows where the devastation occurred in context of the entire country.
It’s like a picture-within-a-picture.
Generally speaking, a 8.0 is 100x more powerful than a 6.0
A 7.0 is 10x is more powerful than a 6.0
7.8 packs a punch.
Was in a couple of 4.6 range quakes in California. Felt like a semi truck hitting the house at full speed both times. Cannot imagine what a 7.2 mag quake is like. Oh and while the Richter scale is a log scale meaning that each number magnitude is 10 times larger than the previous number, the amount of energy released is significantly higher. A mag 9 quake is 100,000 times larger than a mag 4 but releases 32 million times more energy, per the USGS website.
I see the weather demons are at it again……disruption and payback. Squash success.
After an earthquake, or any natural disaster, who’d you rather have help pick up the pieces and restore order: President Trump or Comrade Bass?
HEAVENLY FATHER,
We’re bringing the Precious People of Venezuela before YOUR THRONE OF MERCY.
Please help them in the midst of this tragedy!
Much help is needed. YOU are our only Help.
We Thank YOU for those who are already headed their way. Strength, WISDOM, & ENDURANCE for each one. May this bring Honor & Glory to YOU.
In JESUS PRECIOUS & MIGHTY NAME we PRAY.
AMEN, AMEN, & AMEN
President Trump will follow up on this situation and, once again, the USA will lead the world in helping our neighbors in times of need. This is what we do the best. Although the media will never credit him, the survivors of this disaster will never forget who will be there to help them. We don’t owe Venezuela anything, but we are a great country and we pride ourselves in being good neighbors and, at a National level, Venezuela is one of our neighbors.
The collisions and separations of the many land masses on our planet are by far the largest of the disasters that we have. The earth is settling down some, but occasionally huge earthquakes still happen. I believe God is counting on us to help the Venezuelan people get past this.
How sad. Prayers for the people of Venezuela 🙏
Being a native of SoCal, I know this carnage well, although we have a bit better building codes. The stories I could write would fill the page.
2010 Fairbanks Ak. Had a 6.4 our house shook a little a very strange feeling of helplessness over came my bride and I. Reflecting back we just had our house built on top of a small hill mountain the code back, then was a real pain as we had to dig all the way to bedrock sweep the rock or flush it with water and then pour concrete achieving adhesion to the rock and build up from there. So very glad that code was there. Let’s pray for all the folks in Venezuela for many to be found in their strength in the Lord to be stronger after this. God bless to you all. We should all be thankful for every single day. The Lord allows us to have here.
I lived in Taipei for 30 years and experience multiple 7+ earthquakes along with a bazillion 6 and smaller ones along with numerous cat5 typhoons. If you live on the ring of fire, it just part of life. 921 was one of the big ones in Taiwan with thousands dead and hundreds of tall buildings knocked over just like Venezuela. To this day I still keep all my important things near my bedside just in case. I was also in Huntington Beach when the Northridge quake hit. 2 years ago, while in Boston, I felt the eq that happened in Bedminster NJ. Nothing to brag about…I know. It’s just what has crossed my path. Funny thing is that I am thinking to move back to Taipei (in FL now). I was forced to leave due to covid/renew visa issue. I have faith in PDJT and Marco that they will do all they can to help the people there.
