There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. (John 1:6)  
Whom, my brethren, can we conceive to have such majestic and severe sanctity as the Holy Baptist? He had a privilege which reached near upon the prerogative of the Most Blessed Mother of God; for, if she was conceived without sin, at least without sin he was born. She was all-pure, all-holy, and sin had no part in her: but St. John was in the beginning of his existence a partaker of Adam’s curse: he lay under God’s wrath, deprived of that grace which Adam had received, and which is the life and strength of human nature. Yet as soon as Christ, his Lord and Savior, came to him, and Mary saluted his own mother, Elizabeth, forthwith the grace of God was given to him, and the original guilt was wiped away from his soul. And therefore it is that we celebrate the nativity of St. John; nothing unholy does the Church celebrate; not St. Peter’s nor St. Paul’s, nor St. Augustine’s, nor St. Gregory’s, nor St. Bernard’s, nor St. Aloysius’s, nor the nativity of any other Saint, however glorious, because they were all born in sin. She celebrates their conversions, their prerogatives, their martyrdoms, their deaths, their translations, but not their birth, because in no case was it holy. 
 
Three nativities alone does she commemorate, our Lord’s, His Mother’s, and lastly, St. John’s. What a special gift was this, my brethren, separating the Baptist off, and distinguishing him from all prophets and preachers who ever lived, however holy, except perhaps the prophet Jeremiah. And such as was his commencement, was the course of his life. He was carried away by the Spirit into the desert, and there he lived on the simplest fare, in the rudest clothing, in the caves of wild beasts, apart from men, for thirty years, leading a life of mortification and of meditation, till he was called to preach penance, to proclaim the Christ, and to baptize Him; and then having done his work, and having left no act of sin on record, he was laid aside as an instrument which had lost its use, and languished in prison, till he was suddenly cut off by the sword of the executioner. Sanctity is the one idea of him impressed upon us from first to last; a most marvelous Saint, a hermit from his childhood, then a preacher to a fallen people, and then a Martyr. Surely such a life fulfills the expectation, which the salutation of Mary raised concerning him before his birth. —St. John Henry Newman 
 
Catechism of the Catholic Church, 719: John the Baptist is “more than a prophet” (Lk 7:26). In him, the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah (Cf. Mt 11:13-14). He proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Israel; he is the “voice” of the Consoler who is coming (Jn 1:23; cf. Isa 40:1-3). As the Spirit of truth will also do, John “came to bear witness to the light” (Jn 1:7; cf. Jn 15:26; 5:35). In John’s sight, the Spirit thus brings to completion the careful search of the prophets and fulfills the longing of the angels (Cf. I Pet 1:10-12). “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God…. Behold, the Lamb of God” (Jn 1:33-36).

COMMENTARY FOR ISAIAH 32

Times of peace and happiness. (1-8) An interval of trouble, yet comfort and blessings in the end. (9-20)1-8 Christ our righteous King, and his true disciples, are evidently here intended. The consolations and graces of his Spirit are as rivers of water in this dry land; and as the overhanging rock affords refreshing shade and shelter to the weary traveller in the desert, so his power, truth, and love, yield the believer the only real protection and refreshment in the weary land through which he journeys to heaven. Christ bore the storm himself, to keep it off from us. To him let the trembling sinner flee for refuge; for he alone can protect and refresh us in every trial. See what pains sinners take in sin; they labour at it, their hearts are intent upon it, and with art they work iniquity; but this is our comfort, that they can do no more mischief than God permits. Let us seek to have our hearts more freed from selfishness. The liberal soul devises liberal things concerning God, and desires that He will grant wisdom and prudence, the comforts of his presence, the influence of his Spirit, and in due time the enjoyment of his glory.

9-20 When there was so much provocation given to the holy God, bad times might be expected. Alas! how many careless ones there are, who support self-indulgence by shameful niggardliness! WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me. 

Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Both were righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years. Once when he was serving as priest in his division’s turn before God, according to the practice of the priestly service, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense. Sometimes I browse here in my phone, which forces me to click on songs to go to youtube to hear them, or even know what they are.

Well youtube always shows me new things to watch and for some reason they strangely fit my weird interests. WWII, archeology, etc. But, my point isn’t about Big Brother watching me on the tube.

I am fascinated by the intersection of archeology with the Bible. I am also fascinated by how Science warps itself to fight the Bible. Things like being adamant that Pilate never existed, then oopsie, we found something in Ceasarea proving he did exist.

Well, there are efforts to push the Bible books back in time, and others trying to push them forward in time. And I do mean push.

We have the Hebrew Bible, the oldest intact copy is only about 1000 years old, often referred to as the Masoretic Text or MT. (And I hope MT isn’t itself an attack on the contents, but zealous athiests are wily.) Of course internally it claims the first five books were written by Moses, and the zeal in copying permits very few errors creeping in.

We have the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures commissioned by the Ptolemys of Alexandria, circa 250 BC. Called the Septuagint. But the oldest intact version, preserved by Christians, is only 1600 years old. Its reliability isn’t so good. And yes, the two versions differ. Our Old Testament, OT, comes from the Septuagint. And most of the New Testament, NT, quotes of Jewish scriptures are also based on the Septuagint, or something like it.

And we have a collection of Scrolls found near the Dead Sea. Originally dated 100 BC to 68 AD. But the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) are mixed. There are many scrolls in Hebrew that show little change between then and the MT. There are also some in Hebrew similar to those in the Septuagint. And many more scrolls in Aramaic and so forth.

It is hard to say that the Hebrew scriptures were set in stone at the time. Various sects had different beliefs on what was cannon. Currently the MT is divided into the Law, the Prophets and the Writings. The Writings include Psalms and Proverbs, so the NT show Jesus quoting these two books as well as the Law and the Prophets. At the time, The Pharisees basically treated the Law, the Prophets and those two books as well as some oral traditions as cannon. They would survive the upcoming two revolt catastrophes and set the writings as cannon shortly thereafter, but it was a process not an event. The writings are included in the Septuagint. Other sects had other thoughts. The Sadducees were all about the Law. (Books of Moses.) and the Samaritans had there own Law that differed from the one in the MT. And nobody knows which of the scrolls were cannon to the Essenes. They sure did value many of them.

So, when were they all written? The Bible has lots of internal statements and clues. Jeremiah wasn’t written in David’s time. And it includes vague statements such as finding scriptures in the temple and reading them to all the people, and Ezra getting Authority to impose his bible on the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem. 457 BC. So basically, the scriptures may be in flux from Moses to Ezra.

Surely, something would have existed at the time Alexander took Jerusalem. 332 BC. But we don’t have intact versions from that time. Nor from Ezra, nor from David, nor from Joshua.

We do however have fragments that date before the Babylonian captivity. 587 BC. There are silver scrolls containing passages from Numbers and Deuteronomy, dated 600-650 BC. They don’t prove the entire Pentateuch existed then, but these Pentateuch verses did exist.

For the past couple hundred years, scholars tried to put the dating as a post David compilation of older traditions, (J and E) an addition of a lot of Priestly things (P) and a late addition of Deuteronomy (D) with a final redaction by Ezra. Most if this was derived by textual analysis.

But more recently, that entire work has been scrapped to claim it was all written in captivity or afterward. Usually based on flood myths and the tower of babel.

And, there have been efforts to push the Septuagint later in time and the DSS earlier in time. Now the DSS are 200 BC – 68 AD. Much of this is textual analysis of Aramaic. And the 250 BC date for the Septuagint is declared a myth and only applies to the Law, the rest coming much later. But modern carbon dating is pushing much earlier with some DSS made as early as 230 BC.

So, youtube served me an interview with a bombastic character, that is trying to push the creation of the bible as late as 100 BC.

He uses absence of evidence to claim since no other source talks about it it doesn’t exist. He shreds textual analysis by claiming many of these other sources back date their creation by copying ancient forms of text. And he twists Greek tellings of area tales into precursors for the Bible. He also claims the bible was written in defense from attacks against Jewish beliefs.

Funny how defense against attacks on the Bible caused the Bible to be written. Anyways He started out with a bold faced lie. Claiming that there is absolutely no evidence of the Bible existing before his claims. So, unlike the Pontius Pilate deniers, he won’t accept the evidence others have laid out.

With such brazenness, I wonder how far they will eventually push it? After Christ? During the Jewish setting of their cannon? During the Christian setting of our cannon.

Did you know Ur had flood stories long before Babylon and Abram was a Priest in Ur. And his son and grandson got wives from the old country. Plenty of cultural contamination to explain the flood story even without all the trading taking place.

That was another thing he claimed. No Abraham in any documents. Only things like Abrm in Mesopotamia. Face Palm.

I also have issues with lifting pieces of your hated capturers scriptures for your own. Depicting them as the evil of the Tower of Babel makes sense. Stealing their flood story doesn’t. I know there are many examples of religions being compelled, and of old religions being adapted to new religions. But people tend to reject all of the hated capturers influence when they are freed. And why not include the religion of those that freed them?

Anyways, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence no matter how bombastic the assertions are made. But it does provide space for all sorts of alternatives to be made. Kind of funny watching him put more effort into destroying a past scientifically created alternative so he could justify his own than he did in attacking the internal statements.

Our Heavenly Father, thank You, for Your Love and the gift of Life. Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
