The government is preparing to seize homes and land using eminent domain for the construction of a Data Center in Coweta, Georgia.

This American’s childhood home is being taken by force by Georgia Power. Homeowners in this county do not have a choice.

It effects over 330 private properties. Georgia Power says it will negotiate purchases and easements and use eminent domain.

Georgia Power claims its to strengthen the grid for the growing energy demand in Georgia (due to many new data centers).

The lines are widely linked to Project Sail, a massive proposed hyperscale data center campus that will span 829 acres.

….. This is the dumbest move I’ve seen the datacenter industry make so far. The developers of that datacenter should, if they’re smart, be leaning HARD on Georgia Power to immediately halt its attempt to exercise Eminent Domain and develop an alternate route for its transmission line, at the very least.

An even better idea would be for the developer to announce – TODAY – that it no longer needs Georgia Power to supply electricity to its installation and will instead build its own.

I offered this on the weekend, and thought I would offer it again with a few additions.

My thoughts today are about President TRUMP’S attempt to bring about a Golden Age in America, and how that obviously depends upon our younger generations today, in whom I, as a retired teacher of German, Latin, Ancient Greek, and History (Ancient, Medieval, and Modern Europe and America), still have great interest. My route may seem circuitous at first, but stay with me!

Over 30 years ago, a movie appeared called The Sandlot, which depicted the adventures of baseball-loving boys in the 1950’s. Much like Peanuts or the short comedies from the late 1920’s and early 1930’s called The Little Rascals, adults in The Sandlot were either not present or were tangential to the story, i.e. much like my own childhood in the 1950’s, when, apart from school days, you left the house and returned only for lunch and supper for most of the day. 

You rode your bicycle everywhere in the neighborhood (and maybe farther than your parents would have liked!), formed your own baseball or football teams without adults around, invented scenarios about re-fighting The Civil War, World Wars I or II or even new scenarios about Russian invasions for World War III, or had Wild West adventures, Tarzan-style quests through jungles, and so on. Girls had their own activities, of course, and only occasionally might be included in the masculine games and historical events.

When The Sandlot appeared, and for many years afterward down to my retirement in 2022 (in my 70’s), I was always struck by the reactions of my students to the film, at which they simply marveled, because it showed a kind of childhood which they did not have! 

The film seemed to show children experiencing Life in another dimension or another planet: children freely roaming the streets, creating their own teams, playing on swings, slides, spinners/manual merry-go-rounds, with adults rarely around and certainly not interfering in their games and fantasies. Both my high-school and grade-school students looked at The Sandlot and at, if they happened to catch them, The Little Rascals comedies, with a certain wistfulness and even melancholy: Was it really like that when you were a kid? Well, in essence, yes it was.

In 1980 (note the date), a professor named Neil Postman wrote a book called The Disappearance of Childhood. His thesis was simple: with the rise of cable television and the R-rated movie and a few other factors, Childhood had changed drastically backward to the kind of non-childhood in the Medieval Era, i.e. Postman defined childhood as being delineated by Types of Knowledge. 

Modern Childhood was very young, in his definition, when in the 1800’s adults slowly developed the notion that children in a technological age should be educated much better than usual and that focusing their minds away from the adult world was an advantage to their education and development. Specifically, Knowledge of Sexuality and World-Wide Violence needed to be severely limited, until children became adolescents and could be introduced to certain truths.

Medieval and early modern children were not shielded from anything in the adult world: living in cramped quarters and even one-room houses, they easily picked up on the sexual activity of their parents (or others). Public executions were considered entertainment and also learning experiences for children. Children were usually put to work at a very early age, either on the farm or in the new factories and even in mines. They were not in school at all or very much and were not engaged in uneconomic play. Postman concludes that because of these and other things, those children were basically little adults.

The Disappearance of Childhood did not know about the Internet, but it would have added a huge amount of fuel to Postman’s fire. Surveys show that children as young as 10 or even younger have watched “hard-core pornography” while surfing the Internet, despite efforts (obviously feeble) to prevent that. Postman also did not know about the Cell Phone, which became ubiquitous around 2010, which also offers a small window constantly into “The Virtual World” and which – if parents have unwisely given their children such a phone (and most of them have!) – prevents the child from concentrating on anything real around him or her.
 
Some recent books – descendants, so to speak, of The Disappearance of Childhood – have appeared to show the effects 40 years later of such technology on the last two or even three generations. The titles are self-explanatory: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, Childhood Unplugged by Katharine Martinko, The Coddling of the American Mind by Gregory Lukianoff (and co-author Jonathan Haidt), and in particular, Free-Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy.

She had been nationally ridiculed on major networks for allowing her child to ride a New York subway alone:

“When I wrote a column for The New York Sun on “Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Take The Subway Alone,” I figured I’d get a few e-mails pro and con. Two days later I was on the Today Show, MSNBC, FoxNews and all manner of talk radio with a new title under my smiling face: “America’s Worst Mom?”

“Yes, that’s what it took for me to learn just what a hot-button this is — this issue of whether good parents ever let their kids out of their sight. But even as the anchors were having a field day with the story, many of the cameramen and make up people were pulling me aside to say that THEY had been allowed to get around by themselves as kids– and boy were they glad. They relished the memories!”

Some of the books above detail the neurological research done on children’s brains and the psychological research on their behavior, and the results are less than favorable: the loss of a 1950’s style “free-range” childhood, and the rise of an online-cellphone-video-game childhood, has led to rises in depression, anxiety, feelings of loneliness,* and suicide in the younger generations. 

Haidt mentions the rise of “Safetyism” in his book: Mrs. Ausonius and I had noticed this in the 1980’s because of two “Panics,” both of which turned out to be hoaxes. One was about Halloween, with reports about lunatics passing out apples filled with razor blades, or poisoned candy, etc. The other was worse: day-care centers accused of not just child abuse, but even Satanic rituals against children.

Some people, who ran day-care centers in Texas (The Keller Case) and California (The McMartin Case), were convicted of crimes against children and spent years in jail based on the fantasy-filled testimony of Kindergartners! (Eventually, the Truth literally set them free, but their lives had been ruined.)

Of course, real child abuse exposés in the Catholic Church**, in Hollywood’s abuse of child actors and actresses, etc. did not help the situation.

One of the results was the rise of empty playgrounds, especially in large cities. Since the later 1980’s, playgrounds and sidewalks have been desolate: no children anywhere at any time, unless you happened to see a parent running next to a young child trying to ride a bicycle, or if a well-organized and well-supervised T-Ball or soccer game was happening. Another result was the rise of “Trigger Warnings” and their cultivation in high schools and colleges.

“Safetyism” really took off 6 years ago with The Chinese Wuhan Flu, and the mania about masks and “safe distances” and other idiocies.  

“We just want you to stay safe!” became a mantra, and is still heard too often today.

The decline of “free-range childhood” led to a change in housing developments: gated communities (seen by Italian semiotician Umberto Eco as part of “Neo-Feudalism” or “Neo-Medievalism,” about which there are interesting websites q.v.), “neighborhoods” with no sidewalks, narrow streets filled with parked cars, no playgrounds, no open fields (except maybe a dog park), and no alleys, all areas where children might gather to play before the 1980’s.

To be fair, developers designed such places because families with children became a minority. Children since the 1970’s have been aborted or birth-controlled into a small part of American society.

PETS have too often taken the place of children: “Dog Parks,” bumper stickers with “Let Me Tell You About My Grand-Dogs,” (DO NOT get me started on that monstrosity! 😉 ) grocery stores with expanding Pet Aisles, all point to a childphobic population.

However, Mrs. Ausonius and I have also noticed throughout the last 50 years that, in our experience, Free-Range Childhood does still exist…in the small cities, towns, and villages in rural areas. The fears found in Manhattan or Chicago, et al. do not exist in e.g. New Bremen, Ohio.

One realizes quickly why so many people today in the U.S. Military hail from those small-towns and rural areas!

Fearful children will often become fearful adults: which institutions benefit from having a timid, fearful, risk-averse population?

Could one such institution be a Government, especially a dictatorial, Communist government?  “We just want you to stay safe!” says the government, and you will be very safe in those chains around you!

And so, you can undoubtedly foresee my conclusion: for a Golden Age to occur in America, we will need fearless, creative, and independent adults, and the only way to achieve that goal, is to nurture fearless, creative, and independent children.  

Parents must both shield in some cases and in others monitor their children in relation to the Internet and cellphones. They must foster imagination through books and non-video games and other such things. And schools do NOT provide such nurturing with a politically correct curriculum and constant “group activities.” No more “group” Science Projects or History reports: independent work is needed – where Failure is possible and Success is NOT guaranteed! 

“Staying safe” from bad grades is not an option!

I have not mentioned Religion so far, but as a product of Catholic schools through a Master’s degree, I will say that the morality and behavior cultivated from an early age by my Catholic religion helped me in childhood and beyond. Knowledge of Divinity is a necessity: Atheism shows a reprehensible failure of Imagination!

When the Internet got going in the 1990’s, CHEATING in schools became more widespread than ever before. The Internet allowed you to download pre-paid term papers on any topic for a small price, or simply to plagiarize paragraphs and “assemble” a report as original.

At that time, I was teaching at a Catholic, all-boy high school and was one of the few who had Internet experience: my colleagues would often come to me and say e.g.: “I’m positive this has been plagiarized, but I can’t prove it.” Within a few Google clicks, I easily found the originals.

Our principal – a priest! – never wanted to expel anybody for cheating, even chronic cheating! The unspoken reason was that cheating was so widespread, the school would shut down, if every chronic offender were expelled.

He was an idiot: after making a few examples, the cheaters would diminish in number, and an Atmosphere of Honor and Honesty would have been restored.

Internet Cheating was the worst problem in my career, and it has not abated! And so, our Moral Culture has been attacked in all sorts of ways by The Computer Age.

Years-old text messages allegedly from Hunter Biden appear to show discussions about paying women for sex, arranging their interstate travel, and wiring them money in exchanges released on Monday that Republican lawmakers say the Biden Justice Department quietly sat on for years without pursuing potential Mann Act or prostitution-related charges.

The tranche of 150 pages of text messages, released by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chairman Ron Johnson (R-WI), was obtained after years of congressional requests to the DOJ tied to broader Republican investigations into former President Joe Biden and his family.

“These records show the Biden DOJ possessed text messages from Hunter Biden indicating potential trafficking/Mann Act violations,” Grassley wrote Monday on X. The Mann Act prohibits transporting individuals across state lines for prostitution or other illegal sexual activity.

In another exchange on Jan. 18, Hunter Biden allegedly asked, “How much would another 8 hours cost. I’ve paid 5000 for first eight hours,” before later discussing wiring additional money. One reply stated, “9500 ok.”

IRS whistleblowers who later testified before Congress about alleged favoritism toward Hunter Biden during his tax investigation also said investigators uncovered evidence suggesting possible Mann Act violations. One whistleblower alleged the younger Biden deducted payments to prostitutes as business expenses and financed interstate travel for women.
