I notice that calculators degrade my math skills and autocorrect degrades my spelling skills. Imagine being taught from the start to use devices and not learn skills.
Such are ‘trail’ and ‘trial’. Both are correctly spelled so pass all autocorrecters. But they mean such different things that can’t be interchanged.
They built our vocabularies making us learn definitions and spellings and testing us on them. Making us use the words correctly.
Are our kids now like AI’s? All the words and definitions at their command but not knowing any meaning? Fine with misusing them?

I just gave that exact AI-calculator analogy to a neighbor a few days ago. Once Japanese handhelds became popular and affordable in the early 1970s, kids within a few years could no longer quickly perform manual arithmetic calculations.
Conversely, I remember my father in the 1960s being able to work a slide rule faster than a desktop Monroe calculator (the big mechanical ones) could spit the answer on the paper. Using a slide rule is a lost art today.
AI is simply the Revenge of the Mainframes. And it is being used to displace essential human research and thinking skills. It is making people even more lazy and less capable than they already were.
That lazy lawyers are now using these AI concoctions for filings I find particularly unsettling. The court system (both state and federal) is imposing increasingly severe penalties on AI generated filings that are not human-confirmed and later found to be erroneous.
These AI errors are called “hallucinations” by the courts, and they place a great drain on the clerks and other parties having to unearth them as fake citations.
Coarse (Hat Tip Dutchman), it mite bee that lawers are jus lasy when it coms to speling or careing.

My high school chemistry teacher could glance at a column of figures, and tell you their sum. She offered to give an “A” on the next test if you could beat her with a calculator. No one ever did.
The best teachers I ever met? (Besides my own mother …) High school.
My son can multiply 2-digit and 3-digit numbers in his head virtually instantaneously. He has been able to do this since junior high. He has tried to explain how he calculates, but it doesn’t make sense to the rest of us 🙂

Retired Magistrate here: Amen to that. I can’t tell you how many pleadings I read that I thought were in another language; terrible spelling, run on sentences, never met a paragraph, putting “not” in when apparently that is not what they meant and other errors.
It was rare to review a well written pleading or brief.

I have tried to find more info on the death of Rhonda Massie.
She died at home in Kentucky.
The autoosy was in Ohio.
There was so much silence about her death and the cause for weeks and weeks.
Supposedly there was family there. There has been no comment from her children.
Finally, the autopsy said she had respiratory problems from auto immune, so why was this not said by anyone at the time.
The kind of silence that surrounded her death usually surrounds suicide.
My opinion. Longtime marriage. Rhonda was a homemaker by choice and loved that lifestyle. I think she found out her husband was cheating on her, perhaps a “serious” relationship and was devastated.
I recall that it was widely reported at the time that his wife died of cancer.

I read her obituary very early on, as I had liked her after seeing the documentary on the Massies and their farm–I remember it said she passed away in Portsmouth, Ohio–at her childhood home with her parents. Many months later I reread it and it said she passed in Kentucky. Honestly wish I had screen shot the original obit–I have dealt with a cheater and the main giveaway is often a radical change in appearance and dress. Rhonda was actually as “smart” as he supposedly is, she was an MIT graduate as well. I have also thought it strange how silent the children are……I interpret it as protecting their mother’s memory.
My optimism that events will lead to a successful mid-term certainly rose after all the good news lately; we will still have setbacks, but the fact that momentum has been building for our side cannot be denied, except of course by the doom & gloom brigade.
I believe that President Trump has a good plan and will continue to time its deployment well. A good metaphor would be a fireworks display. There has been a steady few fired, but last week was the first good multi sound and light display and I believe that the intensity of the show will ebb and flow while on a generally upward trajectory, until a well designed, big beautiful, and perfectly timed crescendo is released right before the mid-terms.
For those of the doom and gloom brigade who will accuse me of suffering from a fatal case of hopium, I have two arguments against that:
1) Maybe you just suffer from doomium, the inability to recognize and accept good news.
2) Hopium implies that I disregard reality; I do not. Regardless of how good or bad the events that transpire are I will not falter, I will not quit, I will not surrender.
I do not bring this up to attack people–for Lord knows the scale of the enemy we face and the justifiable feeling that the situation is just too big for us–but only to say it is time now to circle the wagons, to fight, fight, fight.
