It is the result of a conclusion reached in Washington over months: the U.S. does not believe that María Corina Machado and the opposition have the operational capacity to seize power in Venezuela because they do not control, or meaningfully fracture, the military. If they did, power would have shifted immediately after the 2024 presidential election. It did not.
For a long period, U.S. officials, including Marco Rubio, were in constant communication with Machado and her team. They were asked repeatedly for proof of a concrete plan, not just to win power symbolically, but to retain it in practice: chain of command, military alignment, institutional control, day-after governance. The answers were consistently evasive, justified by security concerns, but never substantiated. At that point, from the U.S. government’s perspective, the opposition ceased to look like a viable transition mechanism and began to look like a political wager with no enforcement arm.
The plan now on the table is for Delcy Rodríguez to stabilize the country with U.S. backing and then call for general elections. This is not framed as an endorsement of the regime, but as a containment and transition strategy. Washington is explicit about one thing: this is not a partnership of equals. The United States is running the process, the lines are being managed through Rubio, and the leverage is entirely asymmetric. Delcy is the instrument, not the center of gravity.
U.S. officials also assess that Delcy’s harsh public rhetoric today was aimed inward, at the chavista base, not outward. That messaging is understood as domestic signaling. Nevertheless, as of now, negotiations with the United States are ongoing as we speak. (link)

Well, we’ve been working on Venezuela for some time and the removal of Maduro was executed flawlessly. Gotta assume this has been gamed out in detail and Rubio’s on top of it. That said, now that we’re on it, it’s critical to get out of it asap. Great work now lets make America great again (MAGA).
I don’t think with Trump you have to worry about getting bogged down in a country. Look at his entire history he does things well planned with limited exposure and set it up in such a way that America is not pinned down.
When did Trump extricate our military and State Department from being bogged down in Ukraine, Syria, Korea, Phillipines, NATO, Gulf States, Taiwan and Israel itself ? We still pay for and station troops and very expensive contractors in 800 bases around the world.
While our military working with CIA paramilitaries and bribes of locals cleanly kidnapped Maduro, the military and government remain intact. In a post Constitutional and moralless America the 40 civilians killed as “collateral” damage by airstrikes are irrelevant. Here anyway. Their loved ones might react when given opportunity.
The risk of an insurgency commencing to resist being ruled by Rubio’s Imperial decree from Washington remains very likely. I can still hear George Bush bragging “mission accomplished”. Just a touch of premature hubris and ignorance.
I haven’t been able to find which Constitutional clause outlines his, or Trumps’ authority they claim over a foreign government. Just old fashioned might makes right.
The open hostilities and waging economic and kinetic by proxy war by our country against Russia for 12 years and belligerence towards China just might tempt them to get us mired down away from making more mischief in their backyards. Wouldn’t take much effort or cost.

I recall President Trump’s first term with the jackals all nipping at his heels. The interviewer (sorry the name escapes me) tried her best to trap the president into a retaliation charge for the lawfare agents but he deftly swatted her ‘gotcha’ question away. I had the sense they were trying to do the same thing here by tripping up the Secretary of State to make it seem like this was an act of war outside of the President’s authority. Of course, they failed again.

Susie Wiles should not comment on the law or missions. She obviously doesn’t know what U.S. government and the administration are basing their actions on.! I think she’s made too many mistakes and she should be limited when answering the networks questions. If she doesn’t know the strategy, she doesn’t know the law. She was saved once, but she should not respond if she doesn’t know. I wonder if she is trying to get out?
I was reading through the comments waiting for someone to mention “Susie Wiles”. I just don’t understand or know what to think of this gal. Trump gives her all sorts of accolades yet she seems to try and work against him when allowed to speak with the media. I’m baffled why she is in the powerful position she’s in?
Susie Wiles has done a very impressive job of herding the cats in this administration. She keeps the leaks to almost nothing, and everyone in the Trump choir is always singing from the same hymnal. Head and shoulders above what any of the Trump 1.0 chiefs were able to manage. I hope she sticks around.
