In the past, I did some work for a New England state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit as an investigator. There is a category known as “transportation fraud” that is beyond rampant. It works essentially like this. If you’re a Medicaid recipient, you get free transportation to and from medical appointments. It was known as “friends and family” in the state I worked. You either get a ride service or you drive yourself and get the federal rate for mileage reimbursement (both ways). That rate goes up every year and was about 0.62 cents a mile the last year I did it. I could go on forever about the ways this is gamed but, it was 80% of our workload and growing. The fraud is immense even in the small state I worked. Maddening to do because the court system is so slow and cumbersome, we could only get a few through the system each year and even these only after literally years of legal wrangling. Got so pissed at the system I finally left when, after working a case for a couple of years, a jury would find them guilty and a judge would give em the ole wrist slap. Sickening.
