Good morning all! Yesterday was quite a day. We had a great time.
For Christmas I asked for US Army Green Green Books of WW II.
These books are the official history of the US Army during WWII. There are 78 volumes broken down by Operational Theaters and subject.

There are reprints of all of the volumes at reasonable prices and that was what I was expecting. I was asking for hard copies simply because I have found the maps in the online or digital versions to be a pain to refer to while reading the text of the book. I never expected what I got.
My wife, son, and oldest Granddaughter coordinated. Together. They scoured old book sellers on line and bought only 1st additions that were in excellent condition. First additions of the volumes in this set are getting rare and are expensive.
I got seven 1st addition volumes of the ten volumes that make up the series for the European Theater of Operations. I was completely overwhelmed. I asked for reading materials and got what will become heirlooms!

I only showed for a few years and had mad beginners luck. Got really lucky with judges who loved my Pug girls. Lots of fun but I did not have a passion for it.
I order to show dogs you must have dogs. To have dogs you must purchase or produce them. I bred my own and here is my problem. Every puppy in a litter is not a show prospect. But it is a life and needs a good home. I was not in business to sell puppies and found it very hard to place my babies in what I considered proper homes. I’m either a wimp or a control freak.
I would be the same..in fact am the same. I get attached. And like you, I am either a wimp or a control freak, too.

I have had two Brits, and love them to no end. They are great bird hunters, the smallest pointers. loyal loving and a perfect size in the house. But don’t get one if you are a couch potato, they are very energetic and if they don’t get enough exercise they will drive you crazy.

I don’t know how to describe it.
To stare off at or into something and end it with no memories of any thoughts.
I was told that is impossible. Until I saw it listed as a possible sign of epilepsy. No diagnosis though. But still weierdly affirming.
Doesn’t happen much anymore. Usually just preoccupied with all the little things in front of my eyes.
But while not empty headed, it is pleasant not to be stuffed full of distractions like the first cartoon or preoccupied like the second.
What a lovely post, dear Jim. You described what you experienced well, my friend. Because I suspect we all have had moments like them. I’ve discovered that the older I get, I have become quite adept at debriding my mind of insignifances and worldly irritations. And what I keep, I store close to my heart….those things which truly matter. I’m still game for good conversations such as we have on the threads of this wonderful place.
But this exercise keeps me more at peace than I used to be.
My “Mind Palace” (as Sherlock described his own in the Benedict Cumberbatch starred series…which is simply riveting and amusing by the way) is in order more or less…depending on whether I am sufficiently caffeinated 😉😎

I am making dinner for myself and my Grandson today. He had to work last night and offered to work tonight so that co-workers with family could have those days off. He gets off at 4:00 today and will be here at 5:00 for dinner. He is so busy working that I am very grateful to share all these small memories we will have today.
Those memories grow more and more precious, sis, as our grands grow older and begin lives of their own, drifting further and further down their own roads from ours. Bittersweet but to be expected. At least that is what I tell myself.
Your grandson sounds like a generous soul with a keen sense of others which I suspect he learned at some point from you. Such a kind d heart, which makes the world a better place for those who have the great good fortune to come into contact with such souls.
Enjoy your time together, Pat. I’m sure he won’t leave hungry. And remember, each memory you make, each snapshot you take of something he either says or does, store it carefully…take it from me…they make warming mental cocktails for later…

I gave Beau his presents this morning, a fuzzy raccoon that crinkles and his head squeaks and a (supposedly) indestructible large, hard, bone shaped chew for aggressive chewers. He loved them!
The cats got some small, soft balls (catnip infused) and some cloth squares that look like tea bags, catnip infused, to play with, and a large scratching type post. They are enjoying them.

become holiday orphans and spend Thanksgiving and Christmases alone. I am blessed
to have the kind of good friends that I can invite myself to be a lunch/dinner companion.
Yesterday I visited a friend’s family Christmas lunch.
Today, in a few minutes in fact, I’m going next door to two old friend’s house for Christmas lunch. My friend is now in a wheelchair so traveling is more of a challenge. I didn’t want them to eat alone on Christmas. I’m bringing the pies . . . Have a wonderful day, love.
The gift of your friendship, Garrison, I’ve no doubt means the world to people like your friend. I don’t think “old”, but I can’t away from the fact that I am. It is one reason I corrected my now young adult grands when they were telling a story of someone they passed or met and called them an ” old” man or woman.
I told them it is better to add an “er” on the end…”older”. I was quite insistent upon this. It is gentler and more respectful, which these days as we become invisible to others…which we do…is a kindness I think. I know I’d appreciate it. “Older” as the modifier implies experience and wisdom, which we have by the bucket loads!! Right??

We are by ourselves as well, listening to the beautiful Christmas music and programs on WRR FM out of DFW. And last night our service from the UK which was the joyous anticipation of our Christmases there, Carols from Kings College Cambridge. Reading lessons, interspersed with the carols we love so much and even those we haven’t ever heard. We finished the evening with that broadcast which in Wales we would have watched on telly.
But to tell the absolute truth, we found ourselves very much preferring to listen on the “Wireless”. We are currently re-watching the wonderful 6 season ” All Creatures Great and Small” which takes place in Yorkshire before WII, during, and after when the radio was the only source of broadcast. Beautiful scenery.
We are transported back to a gentler time (WWII not withstanding) when there was more kindness and neighbourliness. A time which has slipped away, or more recently, had a hideous veil drawn over it…and we are so much poorer for its absence.
My goodness!! I have gone on…and on and on. A really life “Chatty Cathy” who apparentlyhas had a few too many (even though I haven’t, which I stress!!).
Off to prepare our evening meal…Honey Baked Ham from the company of the same name, and oh boy!!! Is it ever good!!! Deviled eggs (a specialty of mine), cheese, and fruit salad with Poppy Seed dressing from Brennan, Texas.
Then another few episodes of All Creatures…
It does my heart good, dearest you, to know you weren’t on your own for Christmas 💕 Bless you always, Garrison. Not forgetting sweet Tink, whom I love from afar as if she were my own… 😻
I always enjoy seeing your images, dear Bet. Now that I’m walking a little bit better, a
neighbor friend who fosters elderly dogs has suggested that I think about getting a
suitable but older dog. I’m thinking hard about this. I’ve always had a dog. That said,
Little ‘Tink would have to be no less of the stalwart companion she is now. I know its
possible for a dog and cat to become soulmates and something like that would be a
perfect arrangement. ‘Tink is not at all dog phobic but I’d need to find a dog that is
comfortable around cats.
I know that older dogs are harder to adopt and I’d be loathe to make a mistake. So . . . we’ll see.
I’m going to keep working on this task. ‘Tink is her usual companiable little self. As you know, she’s a very independent little critter which makes her ready companionship all the more touching.

A Christmas memory….40+ years ago, we used to leave ribbon scraps and bows in the fireplace…make boot prints on the hearth rug…and left ‘reindeer kibble’ on the front lawn….and if there had been snow, we made hoof prints on the lawn, near the ‘reindeer kibble’….
My one genius child noted, at age 6, one year…that the boot prints were going in the ‘wrong direction’ for Santa having just come down the chimney.

Because of George’s unparalelled level of honesty and integrity, those who had done business with him in the past were willing to pay for the privelege of doing business with him again in the future. It seems like the word ‘capitalism’ was invented by socialists. ‘Capital’ and Capitalist’ existed, but the first documented use was by French Socialist Louis Blanc in 1850.
I’ve read an analysis of our use of the word as a response to the spread of Marxism after it captured Russia, with the use growing throughout the rivalry and people reaching back to earlier thinkers like Adam Smith to show its value.
Whether it is socialists demonizing, or technicians valuing ownership and free trade, it usually comes off as cold and unfair. But we tend to forget that success comes from providing something to others that they value.

Sitting in the sun room drinking coffee with Sherry and watching the Peacock feed on the seed I put under the big cottonwood.
I woke up at 4am, stoked up the wood stove, made a pot of coffee and played my guitar for a little while. Now I’m here reading and waiting for the rest of the household to wake up. It’s 5:30, I probably have another 2 hours of quiet time. Merry Christmas everyone.
Merry Christmas, rah, to you and Sherry 💕🎄 We had a peacock and peahen which appeared together in the dead of winter at our rural Welsh home. We figured they came from “over yonder” the hills not far from us from the local baker’s, whom everybody called “John the Baker” (as the Welsh always named folks according to their business. The lovely man who delivered our coal was Meirion the Coal). But John had untold numbers of them…
We named them Joey and Phoebe. Both were partial to dry cat food, of which we had plenty due to our menagerie of moggies. If it was time to eat, Joey would stroll up to our kitchen window and peer in. I must tell you it gave me quote a jolt sometimes to look up when I was washing dishes to see this crested head 😂.
What magnificent birds they are!! Molted twice a year but feathers soon grew back. Were guessing that when he was in full peacocky exuberance, his feathers were a 5 foot span. Handsome devil.

COMMENTARY FOR ISAIAH 9
The Son that should be born, and his kingdom. (1-7) The judgments to come upon Israel, and on the enemies of the kingdom of Christ. (8-21)
(1-7) The Syrians and Assyrians first ravaged the countries here mentioned, and that region was first favoured by the preaching of Christ. Those that want the gospel, walk in darkness, and in the utmost danger. But when the gospel comes to any place, to any soul, light comes. Let us earnestly pray that it may shine into our hearts, and make us wise unto salvation. The gospel brings joy with it. Those who would have joy, must expect to go through hard work, as the husbandman, before he has the joy of harvest; and hard conflict, as the soldier, before he divides the spoil. The Jews were delivered from the yoke of many oppressors; this was a shadow of the believer’s deliverance from the yoke of Satan. The cleansing the souls of believers from the power and pollution of sin, would be by the influence of the Holy Spirit, as purifying fire. These great things for the church, shall be done by the Messiah, Emmanuel. The Child is born; it was certain; and the church, before Christ came in the flesh, benefitted by his undertaking. It is a prophecy of him and of his kingdom, which those that waited for the Consolation of Israel read with pleasure. This Child was born for the benefit of us men, of us sinners, of all believers, from the beginning to the end of the world. Justly is he called Wonderful, for he is both God and man. His love is the wonder of angels and glorified saints. He is the Counsellor, for he knew the counsels of God from eternity; and he gives counsel to men, in which he consults our welfare. He is the Wonderful Counsellor; none teaches like him. He is God, the mighty One. Such is the work of the Mediator, that no less power than that of the mighty God could bring it to pass. He is God, one with the Father. As the Prince of Peace, he reconciles us to God; he is the Giver of peace in the heart and conscience; and when his kingdom is fully established, men shall learn war no more. The government shall be upon him; he shall bear the burden of it. Glorious things are spoken of Christ’s government. There is no end to the increase of its peace, for the happiness of its subjects shall last for ever. The exact agreement of this prophecy with the doctrine of the New Testament, shows that Jewish prophets and Christian teachers had the same view of the person and salvation of the Messiah. To what earthly king or kingdom can these words apply? Give then, O Lord, to thy people to know thee by every endearing name, and in every glorious character. Give increase of grace in every heart of thy redeemed upon earth.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

The Boy Who Laughed at Santa Clausby Ogden Nash (1902-1971)
In Baltimore there lived a boy.
He wasn’t anybody’s joy.
Although his name was Jabez Dawes,
His character was full of flaws.
In school he never led his classes,
He hid old ladies’ reading glasses,
His mouth was open when he chewed,
And elbows to the table glued.
He stole the milk of hungry kittens,
And walked through doors marked NO ADMITTANCE.
He said he acted thus because
There wasn’t any Santa Claus.
Another trick that tickled Jabez
Was crying “Boo” at little babies.
He brushed his teeth, they said in town,
Sideways instead of up and down.
Yet people pardoned every sin,
And viewed his antics with a grin,

Your magic don’t scare me, it doesn’t –”

From grimy feet to grimy locks,
Jabez became a Jack-in-the-box,
An ugly toy with springs unsprung,
Forever sticking out his tongue.
The neighbors heard his mournful squeal;
They searched for him, but not with zeal.
