Well, we do not know what has been said behind closed doors. He did not look happy when he made his supportive statement.
My guess is that this is President Trump’s way of doing damage control — trying to get ahead of the story by acting like nothing took him by surprise, blaming Vanity Fair’s integrity, and not conceding that maybe he got hoodwinked by Susie. He does not want to look weak or humiliated, or like he made a mistake in hiring her for such a critical position. So he is not going make it look like the media knows more than he does about his staff, or that they forced him to fire her. (He made that mistake early on with the whole Pence and Flynn situation.)
Instead, it looks like he and his staff are circling the wagons, praising Susie, acting natural and like there’s nothing more to see, and dismissing it as fake news. But yeah… I wouldn’t be surprised if staff changes eventually take place, but done so it doesn’t look cause/effect. Let’s see what happens within the next few months.
