This week, while trying to understand why the American middle class feels poorer each year despite healthy GDP growth and low unemployment, I came across a sentence buried in a research paper:
“The U.S. poverty line is calculated as three times the cost of a minimum food diet in 1963, adjusted for inflation.”
I read it again. Three times the minimum food budget.
The formula was developed by Mollie Orshansky, an economist at the Social Security Administration. In 1963, she observed that families spent roughly one-third of their income on groceries. Since pricing data was hard to come by for many items, e.g. housing, if you could calculate a minimum adequate food budget at the grocery store, you could multiply by three and establish a poverty line.
Orshansky was careful about what she was measuring. In her January 1965 article, she presented the poverty thresholds as a measure of income inadequacy, not income adequacy—”if it is not possible to state unequivocally ‘how much is enough,’ it should be possible to assert with confidence how much, on average, is too little.”
She was drawing a floor. A line below which families were clearly in crisis.
For 1963, that floor made sense. Housing was relatively cheap. A family could rent a decent apartment or buy a home on a single income, as we’ve discussed. Healthcare was provided by employers and cost relatively little (Blue Cross coverage averaged $10/month).
Orshansky’s food-times-three formula was crude, but as a crisis threshold—a measure of “too little”—it roughly corresponded to reality. A family spending one-third of its income on food would spend the other two-thirds on everything else, and those proportions more or less worked. Below that line, you were in genuine crisis. Above it, you had a fighting chance.
But everything changed between 1963 and 2024.
Housing costs exploded. Healthcare became the largest household expense for many families. Employer coverage shrank while deductibles grew. Childcare became a market, and that market became ruinously expensive. College went from affordable to crippling. Transportation costs rose as cities sprawled and public transit withered under government neglect.
The labor model shifted. A second income became mandatory to maintain the standard of living that one income formerly provided. But a second income meant childcare became mandatory, which meant two cars became mandatory. Or maybe you’d simply be “asking for a lot generationally speaking” because living near your parents helps to defray those childcare costs.
The composition of household spending transformed completely. In 2024, food-at-home is no longer 33% of household spending. For most families, it’s 5 to 7 percent.
Housing now consumes 35 to 45 percent. Healthcare takes 15 to 25 percent. Childcare, for families with young children, can eat 20 to 40 percent.
If you keep Orshansky’s logic—if you maintain her principle that poverty could be defined by the inverse of food’s budget share—but update the food share to reflect today’s reality, the multiplier is no longer three.
It becomes sixteen.

Edink, I have not bought Campbell products for a very long time. The sodium content alone would make you sick long term. It also says on the label after the ingredients, in small lettering of course, that it contains bioengineered product.
Progressive soup cans also say below the ingredients, there is bioengineered product in it.
I make my own soup rather than buy the canned. A little more work but a whole lot healthier and can be frozen in individual portions for later consumption.
May be one of the reasons at the age of 75, I do not take any medications and only have to visit my primary care doctor for my wellness check once a year.

No it does not. Always a lifelong staple, it started causing me diarrhea and I stopped buying Campbell soups of any kind. They sold themselves out to somebody and they went downhill.

Along with the ginger, get some thai basil, fresh cilantro, bean sprouts, jalapeno peppers, rice noodles instead of egg noodles, pho spices and you have chicken pho ga soup. A little something different for a change of pace, if you like these ingredients. It is an acquired taste though.

When I was in college in the 80s, I’d get chunky soup and it wasn’t bad. Years later, I picked some up at the store and it tasted totally different. No canned soups for me.

Boxed cake and other desert mixes state the same type warning on the label.
Besides researching bioengineered food products for years, the only way I learned about the bioE food ingredient warning/statement on the actual labels is that I happened to have taken notice while packing boxes at the food pantry where I volunteer.
Since Campbells and other companies use bioE products that may have something to do with so many people developing illnesses and allergies/sensitivities to beef and chicken as well as wheat and corn.
Processed ‘food’ is garbage.

I bake everything from scratch, with non-bioengineered flour, sugar, etc. Also have been baking my own bread either in a bread machine or in the oven.
Basically everything I eat is from scratch. I learned how to cook watching my Grandmother and Mother. Takes longer, but the rewards are big!
Also grow my own veggeis during the season.

Campbell Soup Company issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations.
A spokesperson for the company told Newsweek: “If the recording is legitimate, the comments are unacceptable. They do not reflect our values and the culture of our company. Mr. Bally is temporarily on leave while we conduct an investigation.

I know that they’ve had a market for their products since “forever,” but I turned away from using them a very long time ago. Frankly, you can do much better, and with really no more expense or effort, with a nice cookbook. Buy the ingredients fresh (or flash-frozen as the case may be), and put it on the stove to simmer.
Or, even better: In a cast-iron Dutch Oven in the oven of your stove, set to about 250º. (Water boils at 212º.) “Presto, instant Crock Pot®.” Unlike the stovetop, nothing at the bottom of the pot will get too hot, burn and stick. Heat is distributed evenly by the action of the oven and the thermal mass of the iron. Just what you want for a smooth, flavorful soup. (Or, casserole etc.)
After cooking, let the soup rest for a little while, “off heat,” to give the flavors time to settle just right. It’s well worth the wait.

AG Bondi is not wholly to blame. The raucous calls for the DOJ to prosecute coming from ”the people” are more to blame. Justice cannot be rushed. It takes time for a case to proceed through the justice system. I know that I personally cautioned about this on the many media sites which I visit.
One needs to ensure that all the ”i’s” are dotted, and the ”t’s” crossed before proceeding. But the demand from the public was overwhelming. This is the result of ignoring the ”Proceed with caution.” rule. Even now many commenters are calling for AG Bondi to be fired. If you don’t like the results you get from a rushed indictment and trial, blame someone else.
”With prejudice” means that charges can be laid again. Perhaps this is best.

She says to love your identity.
I get that. As someone with Swedish and German heritage I love both my Swedish identity and my German identity. But that does not remove the fact that God richly blessed me with being born in the United States, my country, the country I love.
She says you are not just Americans with Judaism added on, but you are part of the Jewish people and the Jewish nation.
The Jewish people are, as you wrote, God’s chosen people. So for her to say they are part of what God says they are is correct; they are part of the Jewish people.
And a nation is not just a country, it can also be a group of people who share a similar background of a variety of things. The Indian Nation is not a country, and yet, they are a nation of people who hold a similar background on many levels and in many ways. I have many family members who are part of the Lakota Tribe. They love the United States, their home land, but they are part of the Lakota Nation. Whether they put their love for their heritage first over their love for their country doesn’t mean they love either less.

I think the law the judge relies upon (28 U.S.C. § 546) is unconstitutional. The Constitution gives the President the power to make executive appointments, not Congress or a judge. Congress arbitrarily put a 120-day time limit in place for appointments to be confirmed by the Senate and then said beyond that time limit the power to fill the acting district attorney seat would be made by the District Court judge until a different person is nominated and confirmed within a new 120-day time limit. None of that is in the Constitution. If the Senate cannot or will not confirm or deny confirmation within that arbitrary 120-day limit, then the President’s choice of acting DA should continue to serve until the Senate gets around to doing their job. This judge’s decision should be appealed and the law challenged as unconstitutional.
So what we’re learning is the fight is a hell of a lot harder than we first imagined — us, not President Trump. He came into this with eyes wide open.
So, what to do?
Realize we truly are fighting hell nd double down.

Judge Walker just dismissed USA v. Letitia James—but NOT on the merits.
He ruled Lindsey Halligan’s appointment violated the Appointments Clause. That’s it.
NOT vindictive prosecution.
NOT “fringe blogger.”
NOT Pulte misconduct.
NOT lack of evidence.
Dismissed WITHOUT PREJUDICE.
That means DOJ can re-indict tomorrow with a properly appointed U.S. Attorney.
Meanwhile, the evidence doesn’t disappear:
✓ Her text: “it looks suspicious”
✓ Her tax returns claiming investment property
✓ Her financial disclosures
✓ Her bank records showing hotel stays
✓ Her niece’s utility registration

Charlotte became the latest example of how the Trump administration’s sweeping campaign to deport undocumented immigrants — including activity by immigration agents near schools in some places — has traumatized kids, put new burdens on teachers and administrators, and dramatically altered the school year in the communities it has touched.

He’s guilty. We know it, they know it. The judge was wrong on statute of limitations. The case was filed on time and we don’t know the rest of it, the crimes that never expire.

To be fair here, this judge may not be that off-base in her ruling. Seems like sloppy work by Blonde and team. I know what people will say, if this were the democrats that did this, the judge would help them find a path forward. Totally true and it just highlights to me how empty Blonde’s tool box is. They have to know what they are up against and be ready for it. They seem to always be on their heels picking-up their teeth…..

“NATO” long ago ceased to be any sort of defensive alliance. It has now become offensive, and a simple observation will demonstrate my point.
Any “defensive alliance,” separated by any distance from its presumed “enemy,” would naturally desire to maintain distance between itself and that enemy. This would be territory that the enemy would first have to conquer.
An alliance with “offensive” intentions, on the other hand, would desire to bring its boundaries right up to the so-called “enemy’s” doorstep. It would also desire to shape other, advantageously-situated nations into “proxies” in its fight, without actually granting any membership or status to them.
Russia continues to exhibit patience. It probably understood the true intentions of “Minsk 1” and “Minsk 2,” and finally drew out a confession. Then, faced with an obvious invading [proxy …] army on its very borders, it decided to seize the military advantage and attack first. And yet, it described it as a “limited” military action, set limits upon it, and has never changed its core position.
But – the actual situation here is perfectly clear. It is “Operation Unthinkable,” eighty years later and all over again.
