On my first visit to a country which of course at the time I didn’t know would become my home, this short tour which would change the course of my life stopped in York. It was a Wednesday when Evensong was being observed in their great cathedral York Minster. I did not know this when I walked in.
As I got further in, suddenly from far away and deep within Minster came the sounds of this magnificent instrument and the voices of choristers raised in gentle praise and beauty heavenward. So unexpected and overwhelming was this I could only grasp the massive railings in front of me for support, close my eyes, and bow my head.
A whirlwind tour most of which has faded into memory…except for that moment which will stay with me for the rest of my life. A too short glimpse of heaven perhaps?
Pure joy and awe is the only way I can describe that experience. And so I’d very much like to think so 🙏🏻💕

I was just talking about this today.
Like everyone, got letter in mail that premiums are going up ( almost $250 per MONTH) just for ME alone.
Add to that my $9000 deductible (!!!).
If I choose to not have coverage, and pay the “penalty” when I file my taxes, that would be waaaay cheaper than giving the ins. company all that money.
Sidenote: I think (not 100% sure) that the penalty for declining coverage (as mandated by the jug-eared anti-American kenyan) is about $700.
If anyone knows more about this penalty, please share. I will also be checking with our tax guy.
At the very least, one could squirrel away the monthly costs (that would otherwise be going to ins. companies) and use for any unforeseen costs (gall bladder surg, etc). Because really it’s all a gamble.
I’ve been quite ill for years and none of the doctors have done a thing about it. My insurance is less than what I see here but it’s simply not worth it since they leave me sick and don’t even investigate. After what the AI did to me several months ago I told one of my doctors that I was quitting the insurance since it’s not helping me get better and it is cheaper to just go see him twice a year to get my Rx renewed. I found a new PCP that may make a difference for me which I will find out this Wednesday. Just in time for open enrollment. No progress no more insurance.

From the Basilone thread yesterday.
I saw a talk on cspan where people talked all about the “unfairness” of forces in Europe being shipped to the Pacific to invade Japan. And the points system for some to get out of it.
I also remember Audie Murphy’s book. He started in N. Africa, fought near Cassino and in Anzio and invaded Southern France fighting into Germany. He rose in rank to become an officer and he was awarded tons of medals and sure enough went home with points.
But above this is a picture of a man who was fighting months before we invaded N Africa. And I have never heard about any pacific forces getting ‘points’ to be able to go home like Murphy did. Nor have I heard that the Army Air Force Pilots in the Pacific got to go home after a set number of dangerous missions.
Truth is Roosevelt agreed with Churchill that we fight Europe first then the Pacific. Europe and Lend Lease to Britain and Russia were given priority over the Pacific for forces and supplies. And that shaped all those decisions.
(Technically, Pacific forces were fighting even before that, but POWs from Wake, Guam or the Philippines were lucky to have survived and didn’t get a chance to go home early.)
That decision had severe consequences for Australia. They had 4 divisions, 3 fighting in N Africa and 1 surrendered in Singapore. And Churchill could not afford to send them home to defend Australia and Roosevelt could not promise much support either. To try to guarantee that they would get support, they demanded that McArthur be pulled out of Corregidor and be put in charge. That Roosevelt did. And McArthur changed Australian policy. Up to then, Australia held until attacked, but they could not fight. McArthur decided they would fight to hold New Guinea. The most important fight wasn’t by Australia or McArthur, it was the navy stopping the Japanese invasion of Port Moresby in the Corral Sea. But a month before Guadalcanal, the enemy invaded New Guinea to try again by land. And the Australians, combined with the diversion of enemy to Guadalcanal, and later some US forces:, were able to push them back and totally defeat that force a month before the enemy withdrew from Guadalcanal.
Any ways, it is amazing how we get wrapped up in apparent ‘unfairness’ when there is much greater unfairness taking place around us. And what we think is ‘fair’ is truly a greater ‘unfairness’. Europe got most of the forces and most of the resources and did the job so they get to go home while the people they stiffed continue to struggle.

There is no doubt it was tough for the Marines and Army units in the Pacific until they got the logistical and support arrangements in place. The Navy had it just as tough.
That being said plenty of Marines got breaks. And VMFs also rotated out of the combat zones and then went back in. Individuals were regularly sent home for training assignments or for further training.
In war, shorter is better no matter how intense. Marine actions in the Pacific were generally short and intense while over in Europe Army units were on the front lines far longer though in less intense combat. No Marine or Army Division in the Pacific Theater had cumulative casualties that come close to those of the Army divisions in the ETO that were engaged for months at a time.
By 1945 forty seven Army infantry regiments from 19 Divisions had suffered 100% casualties. All in the ETO. No Marine or Army Regiments in the Pacific come close. Of course that would have changed had an invasion of the home islands been necessary. Okinawa was just a taste of what was to come in that event.

Divisions, be they Marine or Army, deployed to the Pacific required more support. The ratio of those in the Divisons compared to those in support positions for that Division was higher for the Pacific Theater and for the ETO. That ratio is know and “The Division Slice”.
For example: Each of the 6 Army Divisions that fought in the Central Pacific had a Division Slice of about 76,000.
17,000 with the Divison
28,000 in combat support and service units
11,000 in service forces
20,000 in the U.S.
For the 60 odd divisions in Europe the Division slice was only 60,000
15,000 with the division
15,000 in combat support and service units
10,000 in Communication zone forces
20,000 in the U.S.
That does not even account for the resources needed to get them to their theater of operations in the first place which obviously required far more resources per Division being deployed to the Pacific theater.

the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, Honolulu, has all those Pacific battles portrayed in fresco mosaics, different colored dime-sized tiles painting the sea, islands, and deployed warships. Battle of the Coral Sea is one I remember explicitly.
I recommend it as a must-see for anyone visiting Honolulu with an interest in WWII, even over the Pearl Harbor Memorial

I visited the Punchbowl Cemetery and also the USS Arizona Memorial back as a teen in ’63. Both were impressive and I was really moved by all the history that was taken in then. Thank you Nim for refreshing those solemn memories.

Interesting tidbit about the 1903 A3 Springfield rifle you mentioned. It was a copy of the Mauser and the US government had to pay Mauser for several years because of the design infringement.

The reason why the M1903 was not general issue to all US forces during WW I was because Springfield was having trouble getting the temper right on the extraction spring. Out of total production of that part they had more being rejected than were passing QC.
Most histories gloss over that fact when they try to explain why the British Enfield chambered for 30-06 armed over 2/3rds of the Dough boys instead of the M1903.
I have a British Enfield 1918 model complete with Bayonet chambered for the British .303 round that according to the Imperial armory stamps was issued during both WW I and WW II. I’ve put about 20 rounds through it at the range and it is still very accurate.
After I first got it I tore it down, inspected it, and cleaned it before taking it to the range. The first shot I took with it was not aimed. I held it on one side of a telephone pole size column while I was on the other side. All went well and then I sat down with sandbags on the bench and fired the rest of the rounds in 3 shot groups, checking the accuracy of each group.
Good .303 ammo is not cheap. So I have less than 100 rounds in stock. I spent more time striping and cleaning that rifle than I have firing it. But I’m confident I could use it to reach out and touch somebody with it at 800 meters if needed.
The CMP folks actually have a few M1917 Enfields which is the US issue altered to .30-06 or .30 Govt as some refer to it. This type Enfield was the issued rifle of the legendary Medal of Honor winner Alvin York

The 1903 Springfield had a a sad early history as the receivers were overheated in heat treating to the point most all the carbon burned out leaving a brittle receiver that combined with a hot load would fracture and come apart. Some speculate that as even a competent blacksmith would know better than to do this……it may have been sabotage by a disgruntled worker.

The .303 is a fine round in its own right. In a sporter version with quality nickel jacketed ammo W.D.M Bell slew quite a few elephant with that round. If you ever have the chance read W.D.M Bell’s books on hunting, he was one amazing hunter and shot. He fought in South Africa and flew WWI fighter planes.

Back in the summer of 2019, I brought my girlfriend at the time and my younger daughter, for a vacation to Grand Manan Island. It was my 3rd of 4th visits, and the 2nd of 3rd where I stayed in Whale Cove, one of the most beautiful little places on planet Earth.
Grand Manan is the largest of several island in an archipelago smack in the middle of the mouth of the Bay of Fundy, its southern facing cliffs that rise to almost 4oo feet, 7 miles as the crow flies from Eastport, Maine and its northern facing outports, once populated by herring smoke shacks, and its waters with weir nets, 15 miles from Black Harbor, New Brunswick.
The North tip of the island was at one time a geological cauldron of volcanic activity, which spit igneous rock into the Bay of Fundy, which was then washed and smoothed over a 5-mile cove and thousands of years of rough Atlantic waters onto the shores of Whale Cove Beach. There one can find the most gorgeous and colorful and smoothed varieties of granite, quartz and copper-rinsed rocks.
As it were, I would return the following summer in 2020 with my companion, so that she could paint, and so I could explore the beach collecting pretty rocks, my last visit since the Event 201 live psychological simulation.
During our day long return trip, in the summer of 2019, I drove along Rt 1 parallel, to Passamaquoddy Bay through Washington County, Maine, the economically isolated area of Downeast, just far enough away not to be perturbed by the ‘maddening crowds’ of D.C. Deep Staters, metro New Yorkers, and “Masshole” Southern New Englanders. It was still a time of relative innocence, as it were, in 2019.
As I drove, my daughter shared a story about how one day she had been drawing in art class, enthralled by a scarlet crayon, which after the class, she retained in hand and walked out of the classroom, absent-mindedly scrawling in a line across the hallway wall. As she told the story, she smiled.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt, realizing, “I have been there before, and it was much worse.” This experience motivated me to write my first, and probably, my only blues song.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

In a film class I took long ago, the professor said, that it is important to remember, that everything you see in a shot in a movie, is there on purpose.

Y’all who have sat in church and heard, “when we git to heaven we all gonna have a mansion”? They are not lying, we will have a dwellin place. Same as those destined for hell. Like a good salesman they leave out the “effort” part.
Your “mansion” is built here, now, by each and every decision you make. And understand, only by renewing your mind through Gods manual do you see and understand the right choices.
“Thou shalt not lie” it didn’t go away with Jesus death it became the nature of those who are saved, Christians, enlightened by the holy spirt. You can still choose to lie but your spirit will immediately respond, it’s the judgement. Same as every issue covered in the manual. That scratchy feeling when your making a choice, it means read the manual and confirm its Gods will.
Each and every decision is an eternal one, I cannot emphasize that enough. Look to the best interest of those outside yourself first and God will honor you. The gift given unnoticed is not lost, it is multiplied by our Lord. The quiet giving is Godly, the loud gift seeking worldly attention is lost by the selfish ego whose attributes are mostly lies.

Fruit bats. We don’t seem to have any of them around here. My whole life all I have seen in Indiana are the little brown bats that feed on insects. They especially like working around street lamps.
I never saw any fruit bats either in my 40+ years in Indiana. I had massive amounts of hummingbirds for my 3 feeders that I would have to fill up every 36-48 hours (32oz) or they would wake me up looking / buzzing at my bedroom window to tell me the feeder is empty.
I would have been great to see bats at the feeders too, as if the hummingbirds were not territorial enough shooing interlopers away.
Perhaps bats would have been nicer to each other. LOL

A pastor asked an older farmer, decked out in bib overalls, to say grace for the morning breakfast.
“Lord, I don’t like buttermilk”, the farmer began.
The visiting pastor opened one eye to glance at the farmer and wonder where this was going.
The farmer loudly proclaimed, “Lord, I don’t like lard.”
Now the pastor was growing concerned.
Without missing a beat, the farmer continued, “And Lord, you know I don’t much care for raw white flour”.

Then the farmer added, “But Lord, when you mix them all together and bake them, I do love warm fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up that we don’t like, when life gets hard, when we don’t understand what you’re saying to us, help us to just relax and wait until you are done mixing. It will probably be even better than biscuits. Amen.”
