True story. After the Sandy Hook tragedy, I had a pretty good idea about what might be coming. Although I’d grown up around guns (learned to shoot about 9 or so) I only owned long guns inherited from my father. I did two things that were important . . . to me. Since I do so legally here in Texas I purchased an easily concealable Ruger LCP micro pistol and promptly joined the Nation Rifle Association and, shortly after also joined the Gun Owners Of America. Although a Really Bad Thing hasn’t happened, there have been some near misses that made me appreciate being able to carry a gun for personal protection . . .

One day I was having lunch with a friend, who was an attorney with the Army’s Adjutant General Core. He took one look at my cap which I had absently grabbed going out the door. He said, “NRA” ?. And then rather proudly told me he’d dropped his NRA membership “after Sandy Hook”. I responded that I “joined the NRA after Sandy Hook”. He then announced that “we don’t need more than 8 rounds for self defence.” To which I replied . . . “How the hell do you know . . .?” End of discussion. Fortunately, we’ve remained friends.

We now live in dangerous times. A suggestion: Buy a gun. If you don’t already know, learn to shoot. Join the NRA and the GOA. Especially now that many of us are older, we are also increasingly vulnerable, so accepting that we may have to defend ourselves is now an everyday
life reality.

The Marine riflemen were armed with M1903 Springfield bolt action rifle. The same rifle the Devil Dogs of WW I had carried.

Many Marines rejected the semiauto M1 Garand with a popular description referring to it as a “Mikey Mouse piece of shit”. The Army’s 164th and the Army units to arrive later were armed with the M1 Garand.

After this action the Marines on Guadalcanal had a radical change of heart and suddenly the Army troops had to keep a good eye on their rifles or they would disappear.

Most of the Doughboys (including Alvin York) during WW I were armed with the M1917 Enfield chambered for .30-06 and not the M1903. While the Marines were issued the M-1903.

I saw a talk on cspan where people talked all about the “unfairness” of forces in Europe being shipped to the Pacific to invade Japan. And the points system for some to get out of it.

I also remember Audie Murphy’s book. He started in N. Africa, fought near Cassino and in Anzio and invaded Southern France fighting into Germany. He rose in rank to become an officer and he was awarded tons of medals and sure enough went home with points.

But above this is a picture of a man who was fighting months before we invaded N Africa. And I have never heard about any pacific forces getting ‘points’ to be able to go home like Murphy did. Nor have I heard that the Army Air Force Pilots in the Pacific got to go home after a set number of dangerous missions.

Truth is Roosevelt agreed with Churchill that we fight Europe first then the Pacific. Europe and Lend Lease to Britain and Russia were given priority over the Pacific for forces and supplies. And that shaped all those decisions.

(Technically, Pacific forces were fighting even before that, but POWs from Wake, Guam or the Philippines were lucky to have survived and didn’t get a chance to go home early.)

That decision had severe consequences for Australia. They had 4 divisions, 3 fighting in N Africa and 1 surrendered in Singapore. And Churchill could not afford to send them home to defend Australia and Roosevelt could not promise much support either. To try to guarantee that they would get support, they demanded that McArthur be pulled out of Corregidor and be put in charge. That Roosevelt did. And McArthur changed Australian policy. Up to then, Australia held until attacked, but they could not fight. McArthur decided they would fight to hold New Guinea. The most important fight wasn’t by Australia or McArthur, it was the navy stopping the Japanese invasion of Port Moresby in the Corral Sea. But a month before Guadalcanal, the enemy invaded New Guinea to try again by land. And the Australians, combined with the diversion of enemy to Guadalcanal, and later some US forces:, were able to push them back and totally defeat that force a month before the enemy withdrew from Guadalcanal.

Any ways, it is amazing how we get wrapped up in apparent ‘unfairness’ when there is much greater unfairness taking place around us. And what we think is ‘fair’ is truly a greater ‘unfairness’. Europe got most of the forces and most of the resources and did the job so they get to go home while the people they stiffed continue to struggle.
