While it is true more people have died from Alcholism than Drugs, more people have died directly and indirectly from the Production, distrubtion and sales of Drugs in levels that would make Al Capone blush.

I agree about your either or comment and also agree we are after China. Where I don’t agree is I approve of blowing up the boats. It will affect the drug running operation and I’m glad to see serious steps taken to stop drug smuggling. I see that as the opposite of deflecting from our problems at home.
We could do more, especially as regards China (which I think you previously also commented), but President Trump is juggling this with serious trade negotiations and a do nothing Congress.

It actually is that simple. The boats full of drugs did not reach our shores. It is one less boat, the distribution chain was broken or at least crippled and the people who profit from it lost ALOT of money.

In making ethanol, after the feedstock is used for fermentation, it is then used to make excellent, pelleted cattle feed. Nothing is wasted. The part of the corn that becomes alcohol would otherwise have passed right through the cow and become waste, to be digested by bacteria in the soil.

I agree. I remember reading about a group of Ranchers in Texas were going to start a beef processing plant to offset the large conglomerate, major four meat processing plants. This was quite a few years ago. Does anyone have any updated information on this? I would greatly appreciate any updates, if it actually was started. Thank you.
Ranchers do not set beef prices.
You take your cattle to market and you are paid what the prices are. No input. No control. Ranchers can’t set prices on feed. You buy what is for sale. Large ranchers have economies of scale, but they still don’t control prices. Someone beyond the herd level may have control, and large corporations may have control, but not ranchers. The Left hates cattle and ranchers don’t have any control over that either. All you can do is control how many cattle you have, what ages or reproduction status, and when you might sell .
Fertilizer prices skyrocketed. Feed crop prices then went up. Ranchers reduced their herds to accommodate increased expense. Reduced herd levels tends to raise prices for cattle. But there are various levels of production between the rancher and the end uses of beef, the grocery store shopper or restaurant customers. Ranchers have no control over those.
It is much more complex than consumers or politicians seem to comprehend. But the rancher is caught in the middle.
Importing more beef from other countries will drive down prices for cattle and not encourage expanding domestic herds. Just the opposite. You will sell ahead of the imports and reduce your herd levels in an attempt to get higher prices before foreign supply hits the market. Will we be caught in a loop where reduced domestic herds make us dependent on continued foreign beef imports? Possibly.
True they don’t set prices and are paid pennies on the dollar – which is why people should go direct too the farmer.

Side note – don’t feed cattle grain. Graze them and let them naturally fertilize their pastures.
Fields take treatments, for weeds, replenishment, fertilizer and new seed. These have astronomically exploded in price and grain has to be used to supplement poor hay crops (for same reasons and droughts/too much rain). One cannot let cattle go underfed which opens them to disease and malnourishment of calves. Grain finishing gets them up to weight and marbles that meat with precious fat.
I pay extra to purchase beef from a rancher who produces grass-fed, grass-finished meat. There are no hormones or antibiotics. He doesn’t spray his pastures. The ranch land is Audubon Society certified. That certification gives me comfort that the rancher is willing to jump through some hoops to differentiate his practices from whatever McDonalds is frying up.
As far a my disinterest in eating grainfed beef goes, it is not simply the appropriateness or not of what is in the bunker. I don’t want to eat part of an animal that has been fed grains and soybeans that have been sprayed and grown on ground that has been sprayed.
Not if the pastures are done naturally. No fertilizer, no seed, no treatments, no herbicides, no pesticides, no grain – regenerative farming, all organic.
In N.E. WA State, at least, one can drive past farms that have hundreds upon hundreds of roll-bales of hay that have sat for years, with more roles added each Hay season. Can those farmers not find buyers for all of that sitting hay? Are they ‘out of the loop’ compared to the large, Corporate farms? I do not understand all of that hay just sitting there.
Part of that may be transportation cost related. They would be too expensive to ship to areas in the middle of the country (transportation cost exceeding the usual cost of the bale). Part of it may be putting it back for bad years.
I am guessing you have never heard of a Dexter cow. The traditional horned bloodlines, especially the dwarf cattle, make naturally marbled excellent beef from grass, and should not be grained. They have the strongest immune system, ease of calving, and mothering, of any breed, and can maximize weeds. They love weeds! They eat half the regular breeds and usually beat Angus in taste events. They just can NOT be commercial. Excellent for meat from the farm. Find a breeder near you, and try the meat.
You can feed cattle on pasture in the summer but when the grasses go dormant there ceases to be any meaningful nutritional value. You have to supply feed in the winter, either wheat, alfalfa hay or other hay supplemented with grains or cattle pellets. And yes, manure breaks down into a great fertilizer, but it doesn’t adequately fertilize pastures with any reasonable density of cattle grazing on it.
I said no grain – didn’t say no alfalfa or other hay.

Those I get my meat from would also strongly disagree with you – as they use no fertilizer, pesticides, or herbicides. They also don’t have mono-culture pastures. They do use mineral supplementation.
As far as density, have you ever studied the history of the plains of our nation when they were covered with massive bison herds that were far larger and denser than man ever dreamed of – before artificial methods or for that matter any real manipulation by humans? (NOT to say cattle on most of today’s pasture lands could be that dense – but definitely reasonable density)

In the recent local elections in Texas, there was a TX-State Constitutional amendment on the ballot that caught my attention … it seems to be directly related to efforts to “help” the US Beef Industry.
The amendment dealt with ways to reduce or eliminate the way feed and feed crops are TAXED by local municipalities.
It seems there are local multiplicities aiding that are more than willing to help the democrats and green weenies via taxes used to make cost of doing business provocative..
Note: there was another amendment on the same ballot to prohibit adding the value of the Border Walls built on private land to the poverty taxes collected by TX Counties along the Mexican Border.
Argentina beef is excellent quality. Brazil beef, which is tariffed at 50%, not so much in quality. The increased Argentina volume is offset by a decrease in Brazilian beef (which McD buys). US cattlemen need to step up their game and increase herd size.
PDT has also deemed a free Argentina in America’s interest.
Few ranchers will enlarge their herds in the face of increased competition and reduced prices. Basic Econ 101. Unfortunately it has been deemed politically expedient to reduce the price of beef, while the costs of maintaining herds aren’t reduced.
Anyone I know with a business doesn’t fold up in a fetal position and give up because of competition.
You know, it’s funny – just a few posts ago you told everybody that ranchers don’t control beef prices, then turn around and use reduced beef prices as a crutch against competition.
BTW – the answer isn’t less competition, the answer is wrested control of the processing industry out of the hands of the four major conglomerates, two of which are controlled by foreign nations, by eliminating the regulations and policies which protect their monopolies and prevent the wide spread existence of small, independent processors – such as their used to be decades ago.

What good would antitrust actions be if smaller processors can’t make the economics work? You again contradict yourself, as well as ignore the very long history where there weren’t 4 massive companies that dominated and refuse to think outside the rut many operate in.
As one of multiple ways, try this on for size. The 4 large processors set the beef prices to ranchers at a ridiculously low price and they take all the profit. Instead of viewing things as a zero sum game create small regional processors. Support them and share in the LARGER profit you make by not using the big 4, helping to keep them profitable – which helps you become more profitable as well. Or band together with others in your region and jointly own and operate one.
Don’t say it won’t work, there are already ranches in multiple areas of the country doing this. One such example is the group that got together and started The Beef Initiative.

We have to go back to orthodox farming methods, crop rotation with livestock. They’re destroying the soil in more ways than one with commercial farming methods. What they call farming today does not even resemble what farming is all about.
A true farm is ecosystem of growing all food for sustaining life, not just growing soy beans or corn. They need to incorporate rotating livestock to rebuild the soil is what’s missing. It’s a fact, the math has been done. They know this. You can’t grow and just keep repetitiously growing crops on the same piece of ground without depleting the soil of certain nutrients.

I use Texas Green Sand ( a naturally deposited undersea sediment) and Lava Sand (a sand-size and smaller waste material left from lava-gravel manufacturing) in my gardens, along with my composting.
The Azomite is a trace mineral supplement. I usually add it in the winter in small amounts. Also add it to the compost pile. I get it in the large size (44 lbs) for lowest price/lb and it lasts for 7 to 8 years.
I’ve heard the Green Sand is good for breaking up clay soils. Same reason I use gypsum every few years on grass and clover areas.

When I had my horse ranch, I kept about 25 head of cattle, mostly for training my horses. I kept them on three large pastures of native prairie grass and rotated them from pasture to pasture. I did not spray fettilizer on that pasture. I had a manure spreader and spread the horse manure on the pastures, including the horse pastures to ferttilize. One year I even had truckloads of chicken manure brought in and spread to enhance the soil. It seemed to work out for me and my cattle were never sickly and I always had a good production of quite healthy calves. In the colder weather they were fed the prairie grass bales. I had one pasture designated just for baling for winter feeding. It is more work, but if the “want” to do it is there and you don’t mind the extra work involved, it can be done.
Basically the cow herd paid for the horse habit.
In the early 70’s, a local man bought the local livestock auction and the local butcher plant. It was illegal for him to own both so he had to put one of them into his son’s name. Today neither business exists which was caused by government regulation making them unprofitable.
Today Cargil is one of the Big Ag conglomerates. They own feed mills, feed lots and butcher plants. I don’t know if they own cow- calf operations or not. On the chicken side, they own feed mills, hatcheries, chicken farms and butcher plants. They own everything about that chicken from start to finish. I am sure Tyson and the others do the same. Tyson has large pig farms that operate much the same way. Milk has been commandeered much the same way.
Until the government Ma Bell’s the monopolized conglomerates or farmers have had enough and take drastic illegal action to bankrupt them, nothing will change. What you can expect is to see conglomerates given cheap contracts to graze government lands that are not allowed to be grazed now, thereby putting more small farmers out of business.
We need to get back to small family farms and local support businesses or everyone can get prepared to eat fake meat.
Another point. You can’t sell meat that is not inspected. If the government refuses to send an inspector, you are out of business. Yes, that has happened.
The USDA could license independent meat inspectors, to work locally in concert with local butchers. It needs a line item in the federal budget to do that. Such a simple solution will always be blocked, because the markets are captive. The cows must travel, often hundreds of miles, to the nearest USDA inspected slaughterhouse.
Another venue for corruption. Locals have to be in charge.

The lining does regenerate, and then the patient is supposed to start the TB instillation process all over again. On and off for three years. It’s called BCG and has been the standard of care for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer for over fifty years. Each instillation / procedure runs close to $2000. At present, Merck is the sole worldwide manufacturer.
If BCG fails or proves intolerable, the next step up is chemo, also instilled directly into a patient’s bladder. Same shredding of the lining. Same expensive treatment.

I have faced it 3 times, and chose the latter, the volunteer mission – each time (3).

The life journey here, is about helping others… the more, the better, so as to help to make this a better place than how one finds it.

I must “clue ’ya.” Sanctions of any sort are never going to bring Russia to the “negotiating table” that EU/NATO/Ukraine must now sit down at. Russia is not on the losing side of this equation.
They are dealing “the West” out of any remaining illusions of “global hegemony” that they might still have. Planet Earth is a very big place after all, and “WW2” was eighty years ago. When the owners of existing trade systems turn against the traders, build another one. This they can, and they are.
