The relationship between the US and Israel is practical and symbiotic. It has been romanticized by most Americans into having something to do with worshiping the same God, protecting the Christian Holy Lands, etc. When Israel was formed in 1948, there was strong public sentiment in favor of preventing another Holocaust.
For Israel’s part of the bargain, it gets to exist as a place Jews can live without threat of being rounded up and handed over to another Third Reich. They get to participate in global politics in their own right, not by organizing themselves and begging for political agency in 189 countries. They’ve been the largest recipient of US foreign aid Virtually every year since 1948, allowing them to become a major nuclear power.
The quid pro quo for the U.S. and “The West” (we’re not the only country who funds Israel) is that we get a physical outpost we did not have in the Middle East. As oil reserves allowed the impoverished and backwards Middle East to get political and military strength, it was urgent for “The West” to have an outpost within 1948 striking distance.
If you understand this is the bargain we made, it’s much easier to evaluate the current benefits and pitfalls in the relationship. I think more than a few people are starting to feel like Dr. Frankenstein when he got the uncomfortable sense that his creation was having ideas of its own.
This is what I believe to be the correct and nuanced view of the situation. Christians need to stop automatically backing everything Israel does because of Bible teaching. That said, they can do whatever they want to ensure their survival against a failed civilization called The Palestinians. Just leave us out of it. There is nothing antisemitic about a pragmatic America First approach to the Middle East.

PR to favor the Palestinians was invented and perfected by Yasser Arafat. The loss of the PR War back in 2005 was what got the PLA/Hamas Gaza in the first place. Then they would leave us alone.

Slowly over the last 15-20 years, I’ve come to realize that the world I grew up in, believed in, never existed, at least not in the form that forged my identity as an American. This journey has greatly intensified since COVID and the 2020 election. I have lost faith and trust in so many institutions. I used to support Israel, but have recently come to the conclusion they are not our friend. They are not our only enemy, but they are not our friend. After having dropped so many things that used to support my world view, I’ve been left with only one thing that has stood the test and has been found to be true, my Christian faith. The American people need to fix their minds and hearts on Christ. We need Him more than ever. The Enemy is clever and on the prowl. Pray for wisdom and prudence. Open your eyes, love people the best you can, and move forward.
I agree with most of what you have said, except I do support Israel. I was raised a Catholic and we learned at home that we should not ever associate with Jews. I didn’t understand why but I think it had something to do with the Jews killing Jesus and/or modern-day Jews not converting to Christianity.
However, supporting or not supporting “Israel” depends (for me) on whether it is the political Israel of today or the Biblical Israel in the Bible. And frankly, I have a hard enough time understanding the Biblical Israel, let alone sorting out today’s issues.

Every child of my generation did Religious Education as part of their school curriculum (in the UK). It began at an early age. As a young child, and learning the biblical stories my overwhelming understanding was that the Jews killed Jesus. It is right there in the bible, all the stories of Pontius Pilate etc etc. Thus I grew up despising the Jews.
Then, as we got older, we learned about WWII and what Hitler/Nazis did to Jews and others that were deemed not to be Aryan. So, we learned to sympathize for the Jewish people and gained an understanding of the reason why Israel was created for the Jewish people. We also learned about what happened when the Jewish people first arrived… I won’t go into it here, but I do recall that there are people who still have keys to homes they were expelled from.
As I got older, I was enraged by the constant wars in the ME and blamed Israel. BUT THEN, when you delve deeper into what is behind it all (despite the news), you realize that Israel is defending itself with TWO hands tied behind their back. Always stopped from finally winning the war. The constant terrorist attacks upon Israel and her people (like the Munich Olympics).
So, why do we support Israel? BECAUSE the entire world declared “never again”. The Jewish people were treated abysmally during WWII as they were trying to flee from their annihilation – turned away, sent back…. it was horrific. The collective shame plays a part in support for Israel.
Israel is surrounded by hate filled people who want to annihilate them. No matter what is given to these 7th century low iq groups, they respond with violence. They teach their children to kill Jews, so each generation will fight the Jews. What is Israel to do? They respond, they get told to stop immediately. So the cycle continues.
Now, Bibi says enough and will go all the way. It is horrific to see, but it is what needs to be done. War is ugly. October 7th must have consequences for the perpetrators.
All I hope for is that once Gaza is properly fumigated and Hamas is eradicated then maybe all can live alongside Israel and just LIVE their lives instead of constant plotting and killing.
I have my doubts that a happy ending will be achieved, but just maybe it will happen in my lifetime.
I will say that Israel needs to gain control of the Jews who are using terror to oust families from their land (ALL people, including Christians) so they can steal the land and settle it. That needs to STOP.
I do think that we should support Israel and have her back, but the optics of what is going on in Gaze is not good.

I know Jesus was Jewish… I have mentioned that in response to anti-semitic posts here on CTH. But, let us not pretend. We know the biblical stories. As for that being a source of the hate, well, maybe some of it… not to mention that Hitler indoctrinated the mozzies to hate the Jew – but likely a lot of it is directly due to the divvying up of lands by the Brits back in the day.
There are newsreels from the Nakba and I have seen them as well as many documentaries. I am not laying blame on the Jewish people in this regard, but it is a source of much resentment from the families of those who lost their homes. They still talk about it.
I also blame the UN for a lot of the problems.
There are videos and news reports about the terror being used to evict people from their land by the settlers. Burning of cars, burning of olive groves, late night drive by shootings, blockading… Israel knows about it because they do sometimes investigate and prosecute. But, it is still happening. It is not propaganda.
I do not know how this gets turned around to where all people in the area can live in peace. There are awesome examples of families – made up of both Jewish and Arab and living happily in Israel. This is the future. Education is definitely a key to it all.
The Abraham Accords were a fantastic start. But then Bibi decided to blow up a building in Qatar. Perhaps a more subtle action could have been taken.

I watched a few videos about a couple (lady is Russian and guy is UK) that went as “athletes” to the Pyongyang Marathon in April.
It was very interesting. They did 4 videos covering their four days there. They were respectful but you could read the skepticism. I saw a few other YouTubers post videos and watched a few of them.
