And most of them are at the Pentagon. There has been a nearly 100% increase in officers vs enlisted since WWII. Then an officer commanded about 11 enlisted each. Today it’s 1:6.
If we could win a war on multiple battlefronts with those numbers, you know there are way too many non-essential officers today.
This while some enlisted people need food stamps to survive. If Hegseth and PT really want to help some average Americans, they could start by trimming the fat and increasing military pay.

I agree we have way too many bureaucratic high brass in our military but you’re a little off on your numbers and I’m not trying to be insulting. We had one officer for our infantry platoon. We had roughly forty guys. Three platoons in our company not counting the guys that work for the company command. Figure maybe twenty of those guys max. You have the commanding officer and his executive officer for the entire company. That’s five officers per company of roughly 140 guys. Now if you’re talking NCOs(non-commissioned officers) it’s a whole different animal of leadership. Hopefully that clears things up.
Jobs once handled by sergeant now handled by captains, and so on. Rank inflation out of control. Like everything in this government
The most scandalous part of it is that the Department of War has multiple times the numbers of general officers now than in the aftermath of WWII and with a modern force structure that is not even a tenth of the same era. There is far less proportional responsibility for individual general officers in the Pentagon in recent years.

There are 809 active generals and admirals in the US military – Duck Ai answer but from my experience that is about right. 37 at the four star rank alone, and that category would have the least.

Weeding out the baddies
With a Government shut down looming …. there is allot of DoD, which includes the billets for these Generals and Admirals as well as their staffs, that can be closed down-removed-cut.
Plus, all the Ukraine Aide is tucked up under DoD as money is reprogrammed.
Secretary Hegseth has long expressed a desire to cut the number of flag ranked officers in DoD …. DOGE assessments are still happening by the way.
We can hope
Government shutdowns have not historically included putting active duty military members off work status. They continue on duty as if nothing was happening and their pay and allowances continue.
However, that does not necessarily apply to DoD civilian workers, who may very well find themselves sitting at home not doing much of anything other than waiting for the word to return to work. And it may also affect military contracts, payments on which may be delayed until the shutdown is over, so it may also cause contract employees to sit at home as well.
But all that is really pretty meaningless, at least for the govt civilian workers, because when the shutdown is over all of them will receive all their back pay and allowances no matter how long they were off work. It is not like it is with many state and local governments (at least in most red states) when they are impacted by funding shortfalls and are placed off work on ‘furloughs’. Those people often are not paid at all for the time off work. And when a private sector hourly worker is placed off work for the same reason, they simply don’t get paid, if they even keep their job.
Yep … that traditionally was reserved for those mainly involved at the pointy end of the spear …. when one looks at the Pentagon and other DoD operations TODAY … there is allot that can be outright cut and there would be no change in US Military Capability.
OK fine … anybody in uniform under the rank of 05 or 06 …. can be transferred to support the pointy end of the spear or at least their “end strength billet” transferred to an MOS that supports the pointy end of the spear …. otherwise it’s retirement or buy-out retirement or discharge.
TIMES have changed and DoD, at least for the next 3 years, is not a social science experiment.
Completely agree that there is much that can be cut without degrading military capability in any way, and indeed might even improve it in some ways. The whole of DoD should be under review from that perspective. And also agree that for far too long has the military been treated as a giant social experiment.
Am very interested to find out what Hegseth’s big meeting with all the brass is all about. Just a lot of speculation out there so far, but hope it will finally include some of these kind of changes.
According to most news article they continue to earn but don’t get paychecks until the shutdown is over. That would be a hardship for married members and those that must live off base.
I’ve seen that mentioned before, but believe it is referring to the mid-month pay some members receive and is not about their standard monthly pay (those are articles written by journalists, you know). Mid-month pay in the military is elective and is like an advance on their pay and that is why they have been affected by shutdowns. But the standard end-of-month pay is considered non-discretionary and is still paid. If a mid-month was missed, it will be caught up in the next end-of-month. Now, I might be out of date and the rules may have changed, but I don’t think so.

So what is natural born? I think most people (possibly not here), consider it to mean you were a citizen at birth. I do think that we have been far too lax in who is consdered a citizen at birth. I think being a citizen at birth should require BOTH parents to be US citizens or permanent residents (yes I am OK with permanent resident, I realize others might not). Further, to qualify for ANY federal office of any kind I would require that they resided primarily in the US during their childhood, and for the last 10 years of their adulthood (obvious exceptions for military or embassy staff serving overseas).

That was 8 years ago. However, under new ownership in 2023, Tylenol has embraced pregnant customers. There are studies that cast shade on Tylenol’s new assurance about the pill’s safety for pregnant women and the babies they carry.
On August 20, the Harvard School of Public Health reported, “Using acetaminophen during pregnancy may increase children’s autism and ADHD risk.”
When children are exposed to acetaminophen—also known by the brand name Tylenol or as paracetamol—during pregnancy, they may be more likely to develop neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) including autism and ADHD, according to a new study.
The study was published August 14 in BMC Environmental Health. Andrea Baccarelli, dean of the faculty at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and professor of environmental health, was senior author. The study was led by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and also included co-authors from other institutions.
The researchers analyzed results from 46 previous studies worldwide that investigated the potential link between prenatal acetaminophen use and subsequent NDDs in children. The researchers used the Navigation Guide Systematic Review methodology—a gold-standard framework for synthesizing and evaluating environmental health data—which enabled them to conduct a rigorous, comprehensive analysis that supported evidence of an association between acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy and increased incidence of NDDs.
On November 5, 2019, Johns Hopkins University reported, “Taking Tylenol during pregnancy associated with elevated risks for autism, ADHD.”
A new study from researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has found that exposure to acetaminophen in the womb may increase a child’s risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or autism spectrum disorder.
The researchers analyzed data from the Boston Birth Cohort, a 20-year study of early life factors influencing pregnancy and child development. They found that children whose cord blood samples contained the highest levels of acetaminophen—the generic name for the drug Tylenol—were roughly three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD or autism spectrum disorder later in childhood, compared to children with the lowest levels of acetaminophen in their cord blood.

I was pregnant with my first child in the late eighties; my OB told me the same thing. He told me if I got a headache to darken a room, wrap a pillow around my head and lay with my feet propped up. It worked for me, and 35 years later I still use that method.

Not always we have a neighbor that had a 26 week old baby from natural causes. He had a bad first year with lots of surgeries but at three is an active healthy toddler. The problem is she had other kids so only a father and no mother for any of those kids.
I’m so sorry to hear about your neighbor’s tragic loss. God surely gifted him with that little boy. What a challenge for them all. I’d bet they have some good neighborhood support and encouragement.
In the case of the tylenol mom’s baby I have to wonder if the massive drug exposure and shock of the mother’s liver failure have put its little brain and underdeveloped organs under so much additional stress faced by any otherwise healthy but seriously premature baby that it might have created neurological or other damage that it couldn’t overcome and which could leave it with little to no quality of life.
But I feel sure there are and will be a lot of folks praying for that baby, and anything is possible with God.

It appears we have another SDNY stunt in the making. Career bureaucrats—some with ties to known Trump saboteurs like Monaco—thwart directives from higher ups related to a political case. Their insubordination is met with removal, demotion. Then they leak some self serving resignation letter to the NYT or WashPo warning that the “rule of law” and “future of democracy” are at risk.
