It is because Congress has a For Sale sign on the door: nothing passes anymore without money changing hands. This is a consequence of the Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court in 2010.
Citizens United said corporations are persons, and so they have freedom of speech. Giving money to political committees or buying political ads in unlimited amounts is speech, so this activity cannot be limited.
Congress found that under Citizens United, they could create super PACs, foundations, NGOs, that individual Congresspersons control, which can receive the unlimited money from corporations, and this is how Pay To Play became the rule. Since the stockholders of companies are all over the globe, the persons paying to influence Congress could be anywhere.
This gravy train is not going to be repealed by legislation from Congress: it is too lucrative. I think the Supreme Court today would repeal Citizens United, if they had a case referred to them to do that. Except the liberal judges in the lower courts will assiduously throw out all cases that could fulfill that function, because, well, they are liberal judges. It remains for a legal genius to get a case through the gauntlet to the Supreme Court to do it. The Citizens United decision in 2010 said money = speech. It created the opportunity for Pay To Play. But Pay To Play is not about freedom of speech, in fact Pay To Play opposes free speech. Why? Because free speech is in competition with the official narratives that have been bought and paid for with Pay To Play money.
What institutions promulgate the official narratives? The mainstream media, the government agencies and states, the universities, the woke corporations all promote an official line, which represents the opinions of the donor class that underwrites the Pay To Play system. So persons, like Charlie Kirk, who practice and promote freedom of speech, are an irritant and problem for these corrupted institutions. In the zealous minds of left’s clients, they must be silenced.

Redditor here. The site used to be fantastic. Closest thing to the “old days” open message board internet. Communities with niche interests gathering to discuss. Had all the usual drawbacks, but overall pretty cool. Somewhere around 2016-2017 the site changed. First with the quarantining and banning of r/thedonald. Then the “suicide” of founder and staunch free-speech advocate Aaron Swartzman. Then you started noticing consolidation of moderator power, with a handful of powermods controlling hundreds of subreddits. Users like bardfinn, awkwardtheturtle and others went on a scorched earth campaign to destroy any right-leaning subs using a variety of tactics. And then the COVID craziness gave them the opportunity to shut people down as “disinformation” (which was usually true statements that went against the narrative.) The site is now (i think) owned by a Chinese entity and the mods are disproportionately militant trans or gay. The former being the one group you absolutely are not allowed to criticize for risk of getting banned. The inmates run the asylum.
But it’s still a place for interesting discussion when it comes to more niche topics.

You can get deep into the old lore, but essentially, a group of highly partisan, toxic leftists took the place over in the early 2010s. Not sure if that original group is still there, but based on the way the place is moderated, it’s either them or even worse people.
Things got really bad once the old r/the_donald subreddit started gaining prominence on the site in 2015. That subreddit was a ton of fun, and the site started doing all kinds of shady nonsense in order to shut down its influence.

Something different to ponder …. about 2 months ago, when discussion of AI was the the rage, I started re-reading the trilogy written by James Herbert and Kevin Anderson, DUNE: The Butlerian Jihad, that was based on the Notes and Papers left behind by James Herbert’s father, Frank Herbert. I can’t even fathom the number of people who might have participated in the seven forums FBI Director Patel says discussed the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and knew that it was going to happen, or at least be attempted. Some of them may have mentioned it to others offline also.
It takes my breath away to think that had even one of these sick monsters spoken up to law enforcement what a difference it would have made. Either active evil, or passive evil by their apathy.
Kash Patel spent four and a half chaotic hours before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday, pretty wild stuff especially with Adam Schiff. When asked if there are more people under investigation related to the assassination of Kirk, Patel said yes. From what I’ve seen and read, we’re a long way from the truth and a number of footsteps are leading offshore. .
Saw that, a series of questions and then jumping in to interrupt the answer almost before he’d opened his mouth. Whether you like Patel or not these struggle sessions where they literally call him a liar and don’t allow him to respond are unworthy of the United States Senate.
But then, these are the same vile beings who couldn’t endure a moment of silence in honor of Charlie Kirk, they have less dignity than our sports teams.
Watching further, I’ve just figured out that the left is so angry that they didn’t get their way on the confirmations, at least with Gabbard, Kennedy and Patel, that they’re just going to keep dragging them back to verbally assault them and make accusations until they can finally get rid of them. There will be no point of a “normal” administration because the left can’t cohabit normally anymore, the Marxist element in the country is too strong now.
This is going to keep happening for the next 3 1/2 years. They’re activists pretending to perform oversight.

I have stopped giving AG Bondi the benefit of doubt. I was willing to give her some time to get rolling but her comments about hate speech are a game changer.
It really doesn’t make any difference if she was tired or stressed or misspoke, the fact that it came out says something about how she thinks. I would encourage her to work with our president to respectfully leave her position for something she is better suited for.
Maybe a way to stop some of this is to make it illegal to take down content or allow someone to remove content, for any reason, especially if there is a crime or criminal investigation. The only reason content gets removed is that a company or person is worried about ramifications or to obstruct the truth getting out.
If people know that their comments cannot be removed and will exist 20+ years from now, it may deter some of the vile. It is blatant obstruction of justice if any investigation could benefit from the removed content.
I politely disagree, and here is why.
Bondi is referring to Federal laws which have always been on the books. They describe offenses that consist of inciting violence – against public officials, but also against anyone else. They consist of “stepping over the lines.” I think that it is entirely correct for the AG to say that these laws will be enforced.
At the same time, we must not make the mistake that Britain right now is making. We won independence from Britain because of “freedom of speech.” It is not a crime to say something in public that the government does not agree with. And I think that Bondi, when her entire statement is considered, is well aware of that. (And we must hold the government to it … as the Brits so far haven’t [yet] … things are changing “over there.”)
I think that if “content” crosses the line of the law as-written, it should be removed by the site owners – and they should always err on the side of caution.
And also: “You should presume that ‘everything you say’ will exist forever.” Whether or not it has been “archived” or made invisible. Text messages, emails, maybe even phone conversations that were transcribed by the telephone switch. Think twice before you click “Send!”

My point was that she spoke about these laws as “hate crimes”. If she meant the inciting violence, she erred in describing it. The AG of the united states should never be in a position where that error is made. Never.
I have seen lots of derogatory comments about AG Bondi and I never subscribed to all that negativity. I believed she was given a near impossible task and she made a mistake. We all make them but I believe slip of the tongue or misspeaking inherently brings out some truth. I could be wrong about what I see but either way she needs to do more than retract/correct. She now needs to take a path to prove her abilities, or move somewhere with less stress and less workload.
As far as removing content, yes, site owners are responsible but maybe we need some incentive to prevent posting of all the garbage in the first place. That’s what a non removal law will do. It is too easy to just remove. Prevention is hard but that should be the focus, and for transparency the public and law enforcement will have a record that currently doesn’t exist.

I think that Florida’s Attorney General can find plenty of evidence within the State. And would be wise to confine the investigation very-specifically to “the State.” If a “State” action refers to evidence or events “outside the State,” then that will be a gaping hole. The case must be made that the offenses occurred within the State of Florida.
If he refers to “other sources,” then Lawfare immediately appeals that this is not a “State case” at all, but must instead be moved to … “the Federal Courts in the District of Columbia.” There to disappear forever.
And the Florida AG knows that.
No, a state court system runs independently of the Federal court system. Not only can the DOJ not”remove” or shut down a state criminal action, there is a Republican AG in office who will not even try to muddy the action.
There is no federal preemption of state criminal laws.
Florida has state jurisdiction over the whole thing if there was any single action taken inside Florida, which clearly happened.

OPINION
The following was posted Sunday on Facebook by Trevor Tomesh, assistant professor of Computer, Information and Data Science (CIDS) at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. It is reprinted in its entirety with permission.
I’m a University professor here in Wisconsin.
Obligatory disclaimer: these views are mine alone and do not reflect the views of the University of Wisconsin.
The fact that Charlie was killed on a college campus for expressing his opinions and ideas — the one place in society what’s sole purpose is to express opinions and ideas — should be a watershed moment for all universities.
Every single member of every single university community — faculty, administrators, staff and students — should be lamenting this as it spells the death of the university.
There should have immediately been a press release from every school in the United States condemning this act of ideological violence.
Students should have been told about the gravity of this situation.
Faculty should have been coached on how to explain what freedom of speech looks like, and every classroom should have an entire lecture devoted to why what Charlie was doing was fundamental to the fabric of American society.
Instead, hundreds of professors and students celebrated and continue to celebrate.
To date, there has been no statement from my university or the university of Wisconsin system.
Not a single one of my students heard from any of their professors about this.
How do I know? I asked them. Not only did I ask them, but I gave them a 50-minute lecture about why this moment is one of the darkest in American History and how we must pull back from this and encourage dialogue or the American project is dead.
Conservative students and faculty are taking this silence on behalf of administrators as an endorsement of violence against them.
When little 5’4” 96 lb grandma, Sister Cindy Smock came to our campus to talk to kids about Jesus, they had sent out a campus wide email telling the students that if they need to talk about their traumatic experience that councilors are available and there’s a safe space where they can go to cry and play with toys. They then assembled a task force to determine how to handle people like Cindy and the trauma she inflicts on students.
When my students witnessed a man — someone they grew up watching since they were kids — have his throat blown out with a 30 06 round at a college campus much like our own doing something that they are meant to be doing … nothing.
I’ve written, called and pleaded with admins on campus to JUST SAY SOMETHING!
No returned calls. No emails back. No invitations to talk about this. Nothing. I had one email the day of telling me (because they know conservative students actually talk to me) that I can send students to the woke counselors in the diversity, equity and belonging building on campus.
Oh — and I got an email reminding me that if I am going to identify myself as a professor, I need to add a variation of the disclaimer I left at the top of this comment.
So, I am angry. I am disappointed. I am scared shitless.
But when I got done with my lecture (which I intend on publishing — I did record it), nearly every student came to me and shook my hand. One student (Korean, I believe) even gave me a bow.
These kids can be saved. There is so much potential in gen z — but if the only thing they hear from the institutions of higher learning is extremist propaganda from radical Marxists, many more Charlie Kirk’s are going to happen and America will be extinct within the century.
Tomorrow is another school week. I am going to continue to fight like hell. But I can’t do this alone, though. I need your help.

Sad, sad, and very dangerous. However, just affirmed my off the cuff assumptions about what is happening at every single University (we should stop calling them that; they are enemy fortresses) in the country. And it also affirms my off the cuff assumptions that 95% of all University employees are demonic, awful people hiding there from the real world.
The disparity of how college administrators addressed a visit from the 96lb nun speaking about Jesus and the assassination of Charlie Kirk pretty much says it all.
Our campuses are cesspools with not much indication of changing.
And in every Presidential administration, like clockwork, the young, college age kids, have an “issue” to rally around…and if that fails, there is ‘climate change’./s
This is incredibly sad. And he is absolutely correct at how this should have been handled. The Unis have been taken over by marxists and there seems to be no hope of changing that.

Education was taken over a very long time ago – I believe the first obvious sign was taking Civics classes out of K-12… replacing it with ‘social studies’ in what… the early 6os- late 50s?

Please focus – as best you can – upon issues, not “other posters.”
