Utah Dept of Public Safety and FBI officials provided an update to the events overnight following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
DPS: ♦Two detained individuals were identified not to be suspects in the shooting. The investigation is ongoing. ♦The movements of the shooter were tracked via CCTV review. ♦”We do have good video footage of this individual that we are not going to release to the public at this time.” ♦Utah DPS feels confident they will be able to identify the individual as a result of the video. ♦”Suspect blended in well with a college institution.” ♦”The individual appears to be of college age.”
FBI: ♦Agents working around the clock. ♦Weapon has been recovered. A high-power bolt-action rifle, discovered in the woods where the shooter fled. ♦Footprints also identified. “The community is not at risk.”
(VIA DAILY MAIL) – The bullet used to kill conservative activist Charlie Kirk was engraved with transgender and anti-fascist ideology, according to a law bulletin.
The notice sent to ATF agents, reported by The Wall Street Journal, said that bullets found inside the rifle, a .30 caliber hunting rifle, contained messaging on them.
The 31-year-old MAGA figurehead was gunned down on Wednesday while speaking at his own university event in Orem, Utah.
Sources told the outlet that the weapon was wrapped up in a towel, with a spent cartridge in the chamber. Another three unspent rounds were discovered in the magazine, all of which contained wording on them. (SOURCE)

Many years ago when I was in Army Basic Training¹, at least half of my platoon of 50-odd trainees were regularly hitting man-sized silhouette targets at 350 meters using old and tired M-14 rifles with iron sights. And this was with 7.62 NATO (.308 caliber) which is a bit less powerful than .30-06.
This tragic 200 yard shot was not at all exceptional for anyone with even a modest amount of experience with that Mauser rifle, especially since it was probably equipped with a scope.
Aside: it’s a triviality but it’s also refreshing to see the ubiquitous “high-powered rifle” description used for a change for what is actually a high-powered rifle. The .30-06 cartridge qualifies.

The gun may be a decoy. .30-06 (US military round of WWII) and 7.62×51 NATO (.308 Winchester, the US military round since Korea) are both .308 bullets of same or similar weight. Nearly all hunting rifles in the US shooting either are 1in 10″ twist and similar rifling usually five groves right twist.
Any experienced hunter owning a .308 rifle could have made the shot.

I am no gunsmith but I don’t think so. I am sure that they are talking about the shell casing since the bullet would be deformed and they reference the spent casing in the chamber as being marked. No special equipment would be required. It could be as simple as something scratched into the casing with an awl or an engraving gun. Doing this to the shell casing should not affect the accuracy of the round. A single shot from 140 yards with a neck hit (assuming they were aiming for the head) is not amateur hour stuff.
Engraving the messages on the cartridge cases affects the metal performance during the shot taken.
Marking them with a Sharpie would not.
Bolt action rifle, .30 caliber bullets. No indication as to what the make of the rifle is, the actual cartridge used, nor how the rifle is equipped, as yet.
Bolt action tells me the shooter was quite confident in skill. A limited magazine tells me a follow-up shot was really not expected. Together, this tells me Charlie was the only planned target.
Forensic investigation takes time to piece together. That is the most maddening part of it.

The most common candidates for a bolt action, .30 caliber rifle would be: the .308 WCF, the .300 Win Mag, and the venerable .30-06.

My 1891 Argentino Modelo has a very long trigger pull to the wall then reasonably clean release. Due to age and use (in a war I think since the crest of Argentina is ground off) it is only accurate on cold barrel, but that is all a deer rifle needs to be.
Yes, it seems curious that it is a Mauser chambered in .30-06. Nearly all Mausers were in 7.92 or some other caliber used predominately by European militaries or in their civilian markets. But it is possible. The Mauser M96 was manufactured in 1996-1997 for the civilian market, including the U.S., and one of the cartridges it was chambered for was the .30-06 Springfield. A great many military surplus Mausers have been imported over the years and have been sporterized for hunters and some rechambered into .30-06 because in the U.S. market it is much more common and less expensive than the original European rounds.
It will be interesting to see how this young person whose photo is being distributed got this weapon, if in fact he is the assassin. The rifle itself might be difficult to trace, which might be why he selected it. He might have gotten it passed down from an older relative (maybe his father or grandfather or even great-grandfather) instead of purchasing it himself in a gun store.

In Charlie’s case, it may have done irreparable damage to the messaging to young people, so there’s that, too.
I felt the murders of the Minnesota state officials was an indication of this strategy. Again, it’s not that they disagreed with those representatives – they just needed to silence them, or in that case, remove them from power to vote against the left.
So, I think we need different words than ‘it’s wrong for them to speak violence to people they disagree with’. it is more like ‘it’s wrong for them to speak violence to people trying to investigate or improve these problems’.
I wish that I could believe anything that is being said by any of these people…but none of this is adding up and I greatly fear that, yet again, we are going to be left with only inconsistencies and unanswered questions, and the real story of what happened yesterday will never truly be known.

I must say, that was a rather good update. Sure, not giving specific details, but definitely not, “we can’t comment on ongoing investigation”. The quoted “Daily Mail” report begins with what sounds like an incorrect statement (“the bullet used to kill…was engraved…”). It would have been the empty cartridge found in the chamber of the rifle (or other cartridges found with the rifle) that was (or were) engraved. The bullet was the projectile that hit Mr. Kirk. The bullet would have been highly deformed and/or fragmented after terminal impact. The cartridge was likely made of brass. The bullet was likely made of lead, possibly jacketed in metal of different composition.
Also, “high-powered rifle” is media-speak because it sounds scary. Any rifle can kill. A small round, such as .17 magnum (high velocity centerfire cartridge), can kill, even at considerable distance (hundreds of yards). This particular round is used for shooting varmints, usually with a very accurate rifle.
A 30-06 round would do tremendous damage. This was a commonly used WWI-WWII military round and also, is a traditional (“old school”) hunting round.

I do not understand why TP “security” did not have a drone (at a minimum) airborne 1 hour prior to this event monitoring all obvious sniper vantage points! It is the simplest thing in the world. The shot, undetected, also the simplest thing for the other side. Have we learned nothing?

Forgive me if I won’t believe anyone that they “come up” with. This is some type of a gov’t hit (which one who knows) for all kinds of apparent reasons. As much as I wish it weren’t true, I don’t believe we will ever know who this was. I am sure they will find/arrest someone…the public is demanding it.
