That picture got me thinking and rooting around the web.
The Sumerians gave us clay tablets and the Egyptians gave us scrolls, and they were all we had until the Roman Empire gave us the codex in the 1st century AD.
Yep, something like a book, with pages bound at a spine, was invented just in time to create the Bible.
But the word for Bible existed long before the Bible was made. It meant written documents.
The first evidence of it being used for scripture was in 2nd Clement about 150 AD. The definition of what the Bible is wouldn’t come until much later.
This allows for a digression. The letters of Clement are not part of the Bible. Clement was a bishop of Rome who died around 100 AD. There are two letters attributed to him. The first mentions tribulations that are likely to have taken place due to persecutions in the late ’90s. So many think it was written by Clement at that time. But some disagree and a few think it was written before the fall of Jerusalem. The second letter is thought to have been written later, about 150 AD. (It directly quotes another book.) It is attributed to Clement, but he couldn’t have written it. To be more confusing, there is a second Clement from another city who lived shortly after 150 AD.
That digression has a point. That is the state of scholarship of the things written at the time the new testament was written. We argue about who wrote them and when they were written. Looking him up, there are disputes over which number pope he was. And dating his letters has a huge impact on that argument. Just like different dates for biblical writings has a huge impact on how people take their teachings.
Speaking of authorship, the earliest intact copies of the Gospels all have ‘according to’ in the title. But they are relatively young. We have lots of older fragments. None of the fragments have ‘according to’. I have seen highly regarded experts argue that this means ‘according to’ is a later addition. (face palm. Such is the state of poor logic in biblical scholarship.)
Anyways, not being able to read the words, I don’t know which Saint that is. Looks maybe like Christ or an apostle, but none of them would be carrying a Bible or even a codex.
But I am happy to learn more about the picture if you would share.

Well, managed to navigate the night successfully (thank God) and feel a fair wind over my shoulder this morning (again thank God). Would just like to clarify my post yesterday regarding the “Judeo-Christian” thing. I’m not asking that anyone “change” their faith (that’s up to you and God), and thinking about it, is it really such a change??. I do recommend however that we take recognition of the great wisdom held and contained by the “Judeo” side. No, I’m not talking about “the law”, and various “rituals” (morning prayer, afternoon, evening, first the right shoe, etc etc etc – they’ve been discussed for thousands of years) – but about the deeper aspects treasured within the Hebrew “Torah” – more specifically the actual letters themselves. Kabbalistically derived via the 32 paths of wisdom – which by/via the way is available to all. There is a reason why volumes have been written on just the word “Bereshit” (In the beginning) – actually it means “At the start” but let’s not navel gaze. There is a guy who wrote an entire lifetime of knowledge on just the letter “B” in Bereshit. The point is we throw away mountains of treasure by not at least inquiring into 1000’s of years of knowledge. And no, I don’t understand a word (of Hebrew) – OK maybe a few, however I’m very pleased (and blessed) to have been given access to just a fraction of what is there. Don’t throw it away. Anyway time to set a course – you coming David?

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. When I told Sherry what we were doing she said “Stop! I look forward to cleaning my own house”. We didn’t stop. Dishes all done. Litter box clean. All trash cans emptied.
In the fridge is a Tuxedo Cake, her favorite and a fresh half gallon of chocolate milk that she likes in her coffee. In the freezer is a new 1/2 gallon of black raspberry ice cream with chocolate chips. Her favorite. Tomorrow I’m pulling out two Rib Eyes and marinating them.
Now I’m going to go to bed and see if there is something on the idiot box that will distract me from the news of the day.
