I really wish this kind of mission authority existed back in my day when doing drug interdiction while in the Coast Guard Uniform. Nearly every single operator I ever worked with understood that while we were making and difference and saving lives, there was an unspoken level of futility about not actually making the proper responses. Yes, killing smugglers can have an impact that is vastly different than simply arresting and giving these people a right to trial, which can often lead to very short prison terms if that, but mostly simply detention, maybe some of them get “turned” and almost all face no serious consequences other than being deported. That made none of very pleased to understand we were using methods that were grossly understated to these threats. And yes, these are in fact grave threats and not just for Americans. there is a REASON why so many millions of southern americans want the hell out of these shitholes. the cartels have created terror cultures that no family can truly feel safe from. Likewise, US cities and many rural areas are now overrun with drug and human trafficking gangs. These are very real threats.

Yes, the Venezuelan drug boat strike was done by a US navy ship, but it may have actually been done by a US Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) by using the US navy ship.
LEDET was formed by LAW, so the US Coast Guard can send personnel to US navy ships and use the navy ships for law enforcement purposes (including slapping down drug traffickers ⚡ 🔥 ). Navy ships going through drug trafficking areas are REQUIRED to have a Coast Guard LEDET team on board.
