20-25 years ago, there was a gang trend emerging in IL…the gangs were having the ‘youngsters’ under 16-18, commit the gun crimes because all they got was a short stay in Juvenile Justice-a slap on the wrist compared to lengthy adult sentences such as ‘life’ etc.
The ‘correct’ terminology, was “youth” or “student” and they lived/housed in “cottages”.
Shortly after I left that health care job, a corrections officer was beaten up, by these “students”…in a mob attack much like what happened in Cincinnati only far worse. That poor man was never the same, spent months in the ICU and rehab (his head was kicked and stomped on once he went down).
“Consequences” have to have real “meaning”.

It may be a matter of viewpoint in your case, where regardless of capacity they are all “just magazines”…however certain weapons have ‘standard size’ and then varying larger, higher capacity, sizes.
The above are for rifles, but it holds to a degree for handguns as well. Smaller “pocket” pistols often have quite low capacity – whereas a full size pistol, like my .45 with a double stack mag, holds 2x what a smaller one does. Then there are some of the ridiculous sizes for some Glocks.
Note – I understand why some people dislike using the term – but it doesn’t magically mean there aren’t a considerable range of capacities even for the exact same weapon and I’m not going to play name games simply because an errant federal agency tries to wield them as a cudgel. You do you.

We are now, about 16-17 years out from the ‘transformation’ of America.

My former home in TaCompton was burglarized multiple times between December 2012 (Christmas Eve afternoon while I was at work) and June 2013 – ceasing only when an intruder made the mistake of entering the property – and coming upstairs – while I was still at home and in my bedroom.
My .45 convinced him to heed my direction to “get the (eff) out of my house, right now!”
By the following December, the mortgage holder had possession of the property, and I was safe in my new home (and job) in Alaska.

This is how the scourge of gangs in the 90s was eradicated. As someone whose youngest sibling was murdered in a gang drive by, simply for playing a pick up game of basketball in a public park they considered their territory, trust me, I know. And I made sure they were put behind bars too. Sadly the parole time was crap. You were lucky if you were able to keep them up in longer than 1/3 of their alleged sentence time.

The root of the problem is that there is no punishment, thus no deterrent, for anyone that commits crimes in DC. From the street urchins to the bastions of our nation’s power, there is no one held accountable for anything at all–Full Stop. Unless, of course, you are a prophet for good, ie. our President, then they come up with every kind of crap to try to punish and dispose of you. A whole segment of the population have been reprogrammed in many ways and they gladly expect their behavior.
Black culture overwhelmingly is thug culture now. Rap music glorifies drug dealing, refers to women as “ho”, and gun violence is great. Young blacks dream of living the rapper lifestyle. And it isn’t just the ghetto hood rats immersed in it as even middle class blacks listen to and absorb the immorality in the rap music. Just look at Beyoncé’s husband Jay Z, at former drug dealer who is probably a billionaire now through managing rappers and their “music”.
It is a poisonous culture.
When I worked in social services and corrections the response from those who were in custody was without fail: ” Next time I will be smarter and not get caught!” and they lie with impunity! This problem goes much deeper!
Retired Magistrate here: Before I became a Magistrate I had my own law practice and I did some work for Legal Aid in Juvenile and Probate Court. I represented many juveniles who were totally out of control. When they went before the Judge in Juvenile Court most times they received a slap on the wrist and laughed about their “punishment.”
I counselled them to turn their lives around because if they kept up this behavior they would wind up in Common Pleas Court and that judge would be much harsher on them.
Well, eventually I ended up being the Magistrate for that Common Pleas Court Judge. As it turned out many of the juveniles I represented in Juvenile Court ended up before my Judge. In some cases their record followed them up to Common Pleas Court and with that record and the current charges the Judge sentenced them to prison. He would then lecture them that Juvenile Court didn’t do them any favors by not punishing them appropriately because now he had no choice. The sentencing laws for adults meant they were going to prison.
These “kids” were shocked; broke down in tears and couldn’t believe that they were going to prison. Being lenient on juvenile offenders is detrimental to the juveniles and to society. Bad actions have consequences and these “kids” need to be treated as adults, sentenced appropriately and taken off the streets.

Send special forces military into DC. Engage these punks with the most brutal hand-to-hand combat they can imagine. Give them a strong dose of crippling injuries and inability to chew regular food. Make the experience something they won’t EVER forget. There will be no need for a prison cell if they are left unable to walk without assistance. This approach has been done successfully elsewhere. Don’t involve the pansy justice system. Don’t waste time on paperwork. Let the bleeding, crying punks know the next encounter on the street will bring an even WORSE beating.
I can’t even understand the logic of carjacking unless you have an emergency need such as taking someone to the hospital that someone beat the hell out of.
They often take a “ joyride” in the stolen vehicle then sell it to someone who strips it for parts.
When one side of the political universe teaches these people they are victims, all behavior becomes not only permissible but allows them to view it as justice or reparations.
