Yes! This needs to get more exposure. What Obama did in cancelling the Smith Mundt Act opened the door for what has been called Misinformation, but actually is government controlled propaganda.

You are so right. I’ve come to think of it as the greatest crime against humanity.
So many people on the fringes of society are suffering terribly while the elite grow richer and more coarse.
Young people — who now can’t afford to live in our society unless they come from wealth — look around and see what’s been done and it kills something in them. It kills any expectation of decency and assurance of being able with hard work to have a good life. We are just beginning to see the destruction become evident.
I pray President Trump can do enough, and do it fast enough, to salvage what we have left. But no matter how hard he works, he can’t do it alone. I pray talented, creative, and resilient people will find ways to breathe new life into the American dream.

This morning, I was reading the chyron on Newsmax it had a less than a sentence about the View. The way it was worded one would think that President Trump ordered the shutdown of the View. I tell my husband all the time that Newsmax has someone working the chyron who can’t type out a clear concise sentence. I was so appalled after 2 appointments by the obstetrics dept. in the military hospital where I was pregnant with my daughter(just 9 months after I married her father & 7 months after arriving at station), I fired them & simply had prenatal monitoring done by the family practice dept. – they let my 4 & 6yo children come into my appointments with me & wear the fetoscope to hear her heartbeat, and hear talk all about their baby sister’s ‘measurements’; all questions were solicited & answered very kindly.
The family practice people were nice & showed us love; we were a novelty for them – no problems only Happy Joy.
The obstetric people would not let my children in the waiting room door. All obstetricians are surgeons first, many are full of hubristic arrogance in my experience.
I do know one here who quit the hospital scene & opened a birthing center – she’s a midwife at heart and I love her… yet she was an obstetrician for many years until she just couldn’t jump through those hoops anymore.
I gave birth to my daughter at home unattended – my 3rd birth, and I was not about to submit to a military hospital-obstetrics-ritual gauntlet after having 2 normal (“medically unremarkable”; how disrespectful IS that official term for a normal birth!) and totally amazing home births previously. I hired midwives previously, but one wasn’t available to me that time.
Funny you mentioned Spain in your research of statistics on home birthing, that’s where she was born – at that time I could not find anyone to connect me with a home birth midwife there so I birthed unattended; I had friends there to assist so I was not unassisted, just no professional attendant of any kind.

I cannot find any reports of serious flooding in those higher altitudes west of Westernport.

No. Apparently you are not aware of how that process works. The request must be predicated on the amount of damage exceeding certain calculated thresholds for the affected areas. Those estimations must be made after ALL the damage is assessed, which can NOT happen within “days” of the floods. Multiple areas were affected and each had to be assessed separately before adding to the total request.
I live a few miles away. I knew people who lived in the houses in the background. One man waded through to get his child during the incident. It actually wasn’t a smart idea. He was lucky he wasn’t swept away. Professionals were there. The children and adults all got out.

A federal appeals court overturned a law in New Jersey on Tuesday that banned private contractors from running immigration detention centers for the federal government.
The divided 2-1 ruling allows CoreCivic to continue running a private immigration detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey, which the company has held a federal contract to operate since 1996.
“Just as the federal government cannot control a state, so too a state cannot control the federal government,” Circuit Judge Stephanos Bibas, a Trump appointee, wrote in the court’s opinion. “But sometimes their authorities overlap. In such cases, some state rules may legitimately burden the federal government….Sometimes, though, a state goes further, interfering directly with federal policy or ‘destroy[ing]’ it through ‘hostile legislation.’…And when it crosses that line, it violates the Constitution.
“New Jersey is on the wrong side of that line,” the judge continued. “It dislikes some of the federal government’s immigration tools, so it passed a law with the ‘intent’ to forbid new contracts for civil immigration detention….That law interferes with the federal government’s core power to enforce immigration laws. Its construction is admittedly clever: It seeks to sidestep the usual two-prong test that courts use to enforce the ‘bedrock principle’ that states may not regulate their federal counterpart….Still, we see the law for what ‘it really is’: a direct regulation on the federal government.”
ICE are under federal authority. Hard to see how the state can mandate they do anything.

President Donald Trump’s trade deals are illegal, Piper Sandler flatly declares in a new research note. The investment bank analyzed ongoing court battles and legislative authority, and concluded that Trump’s reliance on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose wide-ranging tariffs and cut bilateral deals far exceeds the powers granted by Congress.
It’s not a new opinion from Piper, —the bank laid out its reasoning in April, shortly after Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement of universal tariffs under the IEEPA. Then, as now, it sees a 9–0 ruling in the Supreme Court against Trump as more likely than a Trump win.
The reason that the Piper Sandler team of Andy Laperriere, Don Schneider, and Melissa Turner is revisiting the subject is that oral arguments in these and similar cases are scheduled through September. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will hear oral arguments on whether Trump truly has unlimited authority under the IEEPA to impose tariffs on Thursday, July 31. Piper Sandler forecasts that appellate courts will issue rulings over the next several months.
In a separate May 29 ruling, D.C. District Judge Rudolph Contreras found that the IEEPA does not enable the president to impose tariffs at all and ordered an immediate reversal of certain duties—though that order is currently stayed pending appeal.
According to Piper Sandler, the heart of the matter is congressional intent. As it did in April, the firm argues that the IEEPA, enacted in 1977, was designed to give the president certain emergency economic powers, but not blanket authority to set tariffs. Courts have consistently rejected the idea that the statute includes such sweeping power.
Even recent bilateral deals, such as Trump’s agreement with Japan, do not cure the underlying legal flaw. Congress, not the president, holds the ultimate authority to impose tariffs and approve international trade agreements. Piper Sandler stresses, “Making a deal with another country has no bearing on the legality of Trump’s tariffs,” highlighting that executive-led deals absent congressional approval lack legal standing. “If Trump does not have the authority to impose tariffs he is claiming, it doesn’t matter whether he makes a deal with Japan or anyone else.”
Billions and bilateral deals at stake if the Supreme Court rules against Trump, all trade deals and announced tariff changes made under the IEEPA—including minimum 10% import rates and threatened reciprocal tariffs—would be declared instantly illegal. Refunds could flow to companies and individuals who have paid unlawfully imposed tariffs, if they file claims with the CIT.

I don’t know about the leftist DC Appeals Court, but the SCOTUS will be very reluctant to step on the Executive branch’s (the President) authority to declare a national emergency. That is not for a court to decide, to insert their own idea of a national emergency.

Unfortunately, Secretary Bessent has already admitted that President Trump’s tariff authority under the IEEPA will be struck down by the Federal Appeals Court on July 31st. In a recent interview Bessent admitted that the Administration was now pursuing tariff authority under Section 122 and 232 because it was more “DURABLE” than IEEPA.
Tariff authority under these other avenues are far more limited. For example, under 122 tariffs are limited to 15% and for only 150 days duration unless extended by Congress. Under 232 tariffs are limited to imports that are tied to national security.
Is this an outcome you find satisfactory? If not, why no counter argument about why this should not happen and will be harmful to US prosperity? Tariffs have proven an absolute success thus far, despite the ignorant naysayers chiming in to undermine their macroeconomic sturdiness every step of the way.
I think the Section 122 tariff authority is what Bessent is aiming for and you can see that in the virtually all the recent trade deals like Japan and now the EU at a 15% tariff! If the court strikes down the IEEPA tariffs the fall back are 122 tariffs which are capped at 15%! If we already have a 15% deal then it’s not going to be a big problem. That said, Congress will have to ratify any tariffs lasting beyond 150 days which is probably doable.

That authority was not the only authority cited in Trump’s EO. Any reasonable judge would recognize that and declare the EO still valid, especially under the Trade Act of 1974, as amended (19 U.S.C. 2483).
Btw, Trump’s EO made a good case that imports are tied to national security.
